Hi, my name is Tony, and I remember the first Halloween I spent in the

United Sates. I was in the sixth grade, trying my best to study as hard as

I could to learn English well. Even though I studied English in my

hometown, Hong Kong, I was still not able to communicate in English. I

realized that my classmates were talking about how they would dress

on Halloween, but I didn't know what Halloween was.

That year Halloween came on Saturday. I was home most of the day studying. I didn't have a chance to go outside and see how everyone was dressed.

After dinner, my parents turned off all the lights and went to their room. They did this so they could ignore(不理会) the children coming to the house for treats. But they didn't tell me about it.

I was in my room, so I didn't know what was happening. After a while I went out of my room to get a drink of water. I realized that the house was dark very early, and I thought that my parents were tired after a long day of work. I didn't have any brothers or sisters to come with me, so I felt lonely in the dark house. I was not used to that. Then it happened. When I was drinking my glass of water, the doorbell rang. I looked out of my window. There were four or five ghosts and witches standing at my front door!

I was so scared that I started screaming and I covered myself with my blanket. I tried not to scream, but I couldn't stop. My father came running into my room asking me what was the matter. I told him about the ghosts and the witches, and he explained to me about Halloween. I felt a little better after knowing the truth but I also felt embarrassed about being afraid.

That was my first experience with Halloween. Now, each year I remind my parents, weeks before Halloween, to buy candy, and when I do it, my dad laughs at me about that incident.

6. Why didn't Tony know what Halloween was when his classmates were talking about it?

Before New Year's Day, many of us begin trying to keep our New Year's

resolutions(决心). But unluckily, most of us will give up on them before

the month is over. Why are we always making these yearly pledges(保

证)? And why are they so hard to keep?

Each new year brings the chance to start over and make a new

beginning. It seems like the perfect time to deal with some of our bad habits.

During the holiday season, which begins with Thanksgiving, Americans usually eat too much. That could explain why the first resolution on many lists is to lose weight!

Along with eating too much comes spending too much. At Christmastime, people sometimes spend more than they can afford. This often involves using credit cards instead of cash. After the holidays, many are ready to take control of their lives. And New Year's Day feels like the ideal time to start!

Making permanent(永久的) changes can be difficult because it often involves changing the way we act. When doctors tell patients they will die unless they make lifestyle changes, most don't listen. In fact, researchers have found that only one in seven makes the necessary changes!

We cling to(墨守) our habits even when they're not good for us. And we refuse to change even when it's our own idea. So how can we follow through on our resolutions?

Make them positive(乐观的)

Negative(消极的) language makes us feel like we're being published. Replace “I won't eat sweets” with “I'll enjoy more of my favourite fruit each day.”

Make them specific

Don't say, “I'll exercise more this year.” Instead say, “I'll walk around the park four times a week.”Make them realistic

After three months, review your goals. If they're not working, change or replace them with new ones. You'll have greater success keeping your resolutions if they realistically match your lifestyle.

16. What does each new year bring people according to the passage?

A. A plan to change their jobs.

B. A chance to change everything.

C. A party to meet old friends.

D. A chance to make a new beginning.

17. What might be the cause of American's first resolution according to the passage?

A. Americans eat too much at Thanksgiving.

B. Americans stay out too late during holidays.

C. Americans celebrate Thanksgiving with families and relatives.

D. Americans spend too much money celebrating Christmas.

18. From Para 5 we can learn that .

A. 6/7 patients make the necessary changes

B. making permanent changes is impossible

C. it's hard for people to have a new lifestyle

D. it's easy for people to change their lifestyles

19. Which of the following is a suitable resolution according to the passage?

A. I will not eat sweet snacks any more.

B. I'll enjoy at least two books each month.

C. I'll become a super star within 10 months.

D. I'll practice dancing hi-pop all day and night this year.

20. In which part of newspaper could we find this article?

A. Advertisements.

B. Jobs.

C. News.

D. Lives.

Ⅶ任务型阅读(注意:每空一词)

Palm reading, or palmistry (手相术), is the art of studying the lines on the palm of the hand to describe a person's characteristics and foretell future events in a person's life.

To study a person's characteristics and future, a palm reader looks carefully at the three main lines on the active hand (the one a person writes with). The reader usually looks first at a person's Life Line. This begins under the index finger (食指), and goes down towards the wrist (手腕). This line describes the way a person lives his or her life. A person with a deep Life Line is energetic and competitive (好竞争的). If a person has a faint (模糊的) line, he or she is more of a thinker than a doer.

The Heart Line runs across the hand, just below the fingers. This line describes one's feelings. A person with a deep Heart Line is a peace maker. Family is important to this person. Those with a faint line do not like to be alone. They are often controlled by their feelings.

The Head Line is below the Heart Line, it describes how a person thinks. A person with a long Head Line thinks about things very carefully. Those with short Head Line are very decisive (果断).

A person with a deep Head Line is clever and talkative. Those with a faint Head Line are often very creative.

Palm readers believe that these lines and marks on the hand can tell us something about our
