Passage1(2019·北京卷,A)

Want to explore new cultures, meet new people and do something worthwhile at the same time? You can do all the three with Global Development Association(GDA). Whatever stage of life you’re at, wherever you go and whatever project you do in GDA, you’ll create positive changes in a poor and remote community(社区).

We work with volunteers of all ages and backgrounds. Most of our volunteers are aged 17-24. Now we need volunteer managers aged 25-75. They are extremely important in the safe and effective running of our programmes. We have such roles as project managers, mountain leaders, and communication officers.

Depending on which role you choose, you could help to increase a community’s access to safe drinking water, or help to protect valuable local cultures. You might also design an adventure challenge to train young volunteers.

Not only will you help our young volunteers to develop personally, you’ll also learn new skills and increase your cultural awareness. You may have chances to meet new people who’ll become your lifelong friends.

This summer we have both 4-week and 7-week programmes:

Passage 2

Ecobee3 Smarter WiFi Thermostat

Smart thermostats have become the face of smart home technology for most, but depending on what your home

is like, it’s possible to say the ecobee3 is superior.

Most of the smart thermostats carry the same benefits, including the ecobee3. They can learn your preferences and schedules, and then adjust the temperature accordingly. They’re better-looking and more enjoyable to use than the basic pieces of plastic that occupy most households. Their very presence will probably make you more conscious about saving energy. And once you’re able to heat up or cool down your house from your phone, without having to get out of bed, you won’t want to go back.

If you live in a larger household, the ecobee3 can be much more convenient — provided you pick up a couple more remote sensors. Yes, it gets pretty expensive at that point, but having those gives you effective control over the temperature in different rooms around your house. In comparison, other thermostats’ measurements are largely limited to the area in which they’re installed(安装).

If you live in a smaller place, that’s no big deal; the ecobee3 still has distinct advantages. It is touch-enabled and more spacious(宽敞的), making it less annoying when you want to enter a WiFi password, see weather information, and so on. Still, all the smart thermostats are pretty great. Which one is best just depends on whether you need a

whole-home solution or a more straightforward one. For now, if it’s the former, go with the ecobee3.

Ecobee3 Smarter WiFi Thermostat with Remote Sensor, available at all shopping websites.

4. What is the function of the ecobee3?

A. Planning schedules.

B. Making decoration.

C. Adjusting temperatures.

D. Storing information.

5. According to the passage, one of the advantages of the ecobee3 is that ______.

A. it can be operated easily by phone

B. it has different sizes

C. it is a product without using energy

D. it follows the same pattern

6. What makes the ecobee3 superior?

A. It costs less than those similar products.

B. It may work without access to WiFi networks.

C. It is more effective with fewer remote sensors.

D. It can control the temperature in a larger area.

根据第二段第二句“They can learn your preferences and schedules, and then adjust the temperature accordingly.”

根据第二段中“And once you’re able to heat up or cool down your house from your phone, without having to get out of bed,”可知,它可以通过手机轻松操作。故选A。

根据第三段第一句“If you live in a larger household, the ecobee3 can be much more convenient — provided you pick up a couple more remote sensors.”以及最后一句“other thermostats’ measurements are largely limited to the area in which they’re installed(安装).”

Passage 3

Amazon has changed the way we shop — you can get anything on the site, right? Actually, the retail(零售) giant has to draw the line on some products. Here are the items you’ll have to find elsewhere.

Pets

Thankfully, you cannot expect to purchase the family pet on Amazon. Pets, livestock, and marine mammals are strictly prohibited from being sold on the site and with good reason — primarily being that none of these should be kept in a warehouse awaiting an order. If you’re prepared to adopt an animal, one option is to search Petco’s listing

of adoptable pets in your area. And, of course, rescuing an animal from a local shelter will do a world of good for both your family and its newest member.

Lottery(彩票) tickets

Most of us wouldn’t turn down an opportunity to strike it rich, but you’re still going to have to wait in line if you want to score a lottery ticket. On Amazon’s list of prohibited items are lottery tickets. Rules and regulations about selling lotto tickets vary by state and merchants must apply to become a retailer of lottery tickets. For example, the California Lottery asks that potential sellers have more than 200 customers daily, be able to accommodate official lottery equipment, and be in a retail setting like a grocery or gas station, among others.

Tobacco

You can find a variety of things for a smoking habit, like ashtrays, pipes, and cigarette paper, on Amazon, but don’t expect to find any actual tobacco products. E-cigarettes, regardless of whether or not they contain nicotine, are also a no-no on the site. It would simply be boring for the company to check the age of buyers ordering tobacco products online.

7. Why is there a ban on selling pets on Amazon?

A. Because selling pets on the Internet is illegal in the world.

B. Because animals can’t be put in the storehouse to sell.

C. Because it’s not safe to buy animals on the Internet.

D. Because animals can only be bought from local shelters.

8. What can you do if you want to buy a lottery ticket?

A. Accommodate official lottery equipment yourself.

B. Apply to become a retailer of lottery tickets yourself.

C. Queue at a lottery ticket store to get one on the spot.

D. Live a life yourself near a grocery store or gas station.

9. What can you buy on Amazon according to the text?

A. E-cigarettes.

B. Marine mammals.

C. Lottery equipment.

D. Cigarette paper.

依据文章“Pets”部分的“primarily being that none of these should be kept in a warehouse awaiting an order”可知宠物之所以无法在亚马逊网购是因为它们不能放在库房里待购。故选B。

依据“Lottery(彩票) tickets”部分的“you’re still going to have to wait in line if you want to score a lottery ticket”这句话可知,买彩票需要去彩票店排队购买。故选C。

依据文章最后一段的“You can find a variety of things for a smoking habit, like ashtrays, pipes, and cigarette paper, on Amazon.”(你可以为你的吸烟习惯在亚马逊上找到各种各样的东西,比如烟灰缸、烟斗和卷烟纸。)

Passage 4

It is true that summer is hot. But here is something to make your day easier. Are you prepared? Meet the new AirFreez — an alternative to traditional Air Conditioners that cools you just the same!

How does it work?

It is surprisingly easy to set up! You just need to plug it into a socket(插座) or any USB port (it uses so little energy that it can even run off of a phone or laptop battery).

Once you have done that, simply fill it with 20oz/0. 6L of cold tap water.

Now just press the power button and the instant cool air is here!

What is so special about this little box?

It is no larger than a lunchbox. It can be powered by a pocket solar panel(电池板) or battery pack and you probably have the world’s first and most portable AC unit.

Bad sleepers are putting the AirFreez next to their beds at night. The relaxing blow of cool, clean air, the comforting soft night light and the quiet create the perfect sleeping conditions!

The price is just amazing. Most AC units cost at least $ 300+ and you have to pay more to cover the expensive electricity bills each month. AirFreez costs less than $ 100 (actually $ 53 if you buy more than one here).

Top Tips:

●To make your air even cooler — add a bottle of cold tap water from your refrigerator or even ice!

●For a beautiful relaxing atmosphere — add a few drops of fragrant oils to the water!

10. Which is necessary to get AirFreez to work?

A. A socket.

B. A phone battery.

C. A laptop and hot water.

D. Cold water and power supply.

11. How much do two sets of AirFreez cost?

A. $106.

B. $ 200.

C. $ 300.

D. $ 600.

12. How can a user of AirFreez get cooler air?

A. By adding ice into the machine.

B. By putting it closer to one’s bed.

C. By filling the machine with tap water.

D. By adding a few drops of special oils.

根据“How does it work?”部分中的“You just need to plug it into a socket(插座) or any USB port (it uses so little energy that it can even run off of a phone or laptop battery).”及“Once you have done that, simply fill it with 20oz/0. 6L of cold tap water.”

根据“What is so special about this little box?”部分中的“AirFreez costs less than $100 (actually $ 53 if you buy more than one here)”可知,购买两台或两台以上AirFreez只需每台花53美元,所以买两台需付106美元,故A项正确。

根据“Top Tips部分中的“●To make your air even cooler — add a bottle of cold tap water from your refrigerator or even ice!”

一般包括直接理解题(在原文中可直接找到答案,常用who, what, when, where, why和how等提问。) When / Where did the story happen? Which of the following statements is (not) correct? Which of the following statements is (not) mentioned in the passage? Which is the right order of the events given in the passage? All the statements are true except… Which of the following statements is true/NOT true/false, according to the passage? Choose the right order of the events given in the passage?

According to the passage, which of the following can you most possibly watch on TV? A. You often play football with your friends after school. B. Your teacher has got a cold. C. A tiger in the city zoo has run out and hasn't been caught. D. The bike in front of your house is lost. Secondly, a news story has to be interesting and unusual. People don't want to read stories about everyday life. As a result, many stories are about some kind of danger and seem to be "bad" news. Many children use the Internet to get useful knowledge and information, and to relax in their free time.

一般包括直接理解题(在原文中可直接找到答案,常用who, what, when, where, why 和how 等提问。) When / Where did the story happen? Which of the following statements is (not) correct? Which of the following statements is (not) mentioned in the passage? Which is the right order of the events given in the passage? All the statements are true except…

Which of the following statements is (not) correct? 3. In the passage, which of the following is mentioned / not mentioned? 4. All the following statements are not true except ______. 5. All the statements are true except______. 6. Choose the right order of the events given in the passage? 7. When/Where did the story happen?

B(2018-III) Cities usually have a good reason for being where they are, like a nearby port or river. People settle in these places because they are easy to get to and naturally suited to communications and trade. New York City, for example, is near a large harbour at the mouth of the Hudson River. Over 300 years its population grew gradually from 800 people to 8 million. But not all cities develop slowly over a long period of time. Boom towns grow from nothing almost overnight. In 1896, Dawson, Canada, was unmapped wilderness(荒野). But gold was discovered there in 1897, and two years later, it was one of the largest cities in the West, with a population of 30,000. Dawson did not have any of the natural conveniences of cities like London or Paris. People went there for gold. They travelled over snow-covered mountains and sailed hundreds of miles up icy rivers. The path to Dawson was covered with thirty feet of wet snow that could fall without warming. An avalanche(雪崩) once closed the path, killing 63 people. For many who made it to Dawson, however, the rewards were worth the difficult trip. Of the first 20,000 people who dug for gold, 4,000 got rich. About 100 of these stayed rich men for the rest of their lives. But no matter how rich they were, Dawson was never comfortable. Necessities like food and wood were very expensive. But soon, the gold that Dawson depended on had all been found. The city was crowded with disappointed people with no interest in settling down, and when they heard there were new gold discoveries in Alaska, they left Dawson City as quickly as they had come. Today, people still come and go — to see where the Canadian gold rush happened. Tourism is now the chief industry of Dawson City — its present population is 762. 24. What attracted the early settlers to New York City? A. Its business culture. B. Its small population. C. Its geographical position. D. Its favourable climate. 25. What do we know about those who first dug for gold in Dawson? A. Two-thirds of them stayed there. B. One out of five people got rich. C. Almost everyone gave up. D. Half of them died. 26. What was the main reason for many people to leave Dawson? A. They found the city too crowded. B. They wanted to try their luck elsewhere. C. They were unable to stand the winter. D. They were short of food. 27. What is the text mainly about? A. The rise and fall of a city. B. The gold rush in Canada. C. Journeys into the wilderness. D. Tourism in Dawson. C(2018-III)
