“I Went Skydiving at 84!”

As a young girl growing up in the 1930s, I always wanted to fly a plane, but back then it was almost unheard of for a woman to do that. I got a taste of the dream in 2001, when my husband arranged for me to ride in a hot air balloon for my birthday. But the experience turned out to be very dull. Around that time, I told my husband that I wanted to skydive. So when our retirement community announced that they were having an essay competition and the topic was an experience of a lifetime that you wanted to have. I decided to write about my dream.

In the essay, I wrote about my desire to skydive, stating Gorge Bush Sr. did it at age 80. Why not me? I was just 84 and in pretty good health . A year went by and I heard nothing. But then at a community party in late April 2009, they announced that I was one of the winners. I just couldn’t believe it. Inspired by this. I decided to realize my dream, even though some of my family members and my doctor were against it.

On June 11,2009, nearly 40 of my family and friends gathered in the area close to where I would land while I headed up in the airplane. My instructor, Jay, guided me through the experience. The plane was the noisiest one I had ever been in, but I wasn’t frightened-I was really just looking forward to the experience. When we reached 13,000 feet, Jay instructed me to throw myself out of the plane. When we first

hit the air, the wind was so strong that I could hardly breathe. For a second I thought, “What have I gotten myself into?”But then everything got calmer. We were in a free fall for about a minute before Jay opened the parachute (降落伞), then we just floated downward for about five minutes . Being up in the clouds and looking at the view below was unlike anything I have ever felt-much better than the hot air balloon. I was just enjoying it.

Skydiving was really one of the greatest experiences of my life. I hope other people will look at me and really one of the greatest experiences of my life. I hope other people will look at me and realize that you don’t stop living just because you are 84 years old. If there’s something you want to experience, look into it. If it’s something that is possible, make it happen.

Students and Technology in the Classroom

I love my Blackberry—it’s my little connection to the larger world that can go anywhere with me. I also love my laptop computer, as it holds all of my writing and thoughts. Despite this love of technology, I know that there are times when I need to move away from there devices(设备)and truly communicate with others.

On occasion, I teach a course called History Matters for a group of higher education managers. My goals for the class include a full discussion of historical themes and ideas. Because I want students to thoroughly study the material and exchange their ideas with each other in the classroom, I have a rule—no laptops, iPads, etc. When students were told my rule in advance of the class, some of them were not happy.

Most students assume that my reasons for this rule include unpleasant experiences in the past with students misusing technology. There’s a bit of truth to that. Some students assume that I am anti-technology. There’s no truth in that at all. I love technology and try to keep up with it so I can relate to my students.

The real reason why I ask students to leave technology at the door is that I think there are very few places in which we can have deep conversations and truly engage complex ideas. Interruptions by technology often break concentration and allow for too much dependence on out information for ideas. I want students to dig deep within themselves for inspiration and ideas. I want them to push each other to think differently and to make connections between the course material and the class discussion.

I’ve been teaching my history class in this way for many years and the evaluations reflect student satisfaction with the environment that I create. Students realize that with deep conversation and challenge, they learn at a level that helps them keep the course material beyond the classroom

I’m not saying that I won’t ever change my mind about technology use in my history class, but until I hear a really good reason for the change, I’m sticking to my plan.

A few hours of technology-free dialogue is just too sweet to give up.

福建省闽侯县第八中学2018届高三上学期第一次月考语文试题 第Ⅰ卷阅读题 甲必考题 一、现代文阅读(9分,每小题3分) 阅读下面的文字,完成1~~3题。 人造反式脂肪酸 在日常生活中,人造反式脂肪酸是人们餐桌上必不可少的一部分。香喷喷的奶油蛋糕,金黄色的炸薯条,诱人的起酥面包,爽口的冰淇淋,乃至饼干、咖啡伴侣、爆米花……这些受人欢迎的食品中,都可见到反式脂肪酸的身影。 然而就在2015年6月16日,美国食品与药品管理局(FDA)发布一项法规,将在3年内逐步清除加工食品中的人造反式脂肪,最终彻底禁用。FDA法案委员斯蒂芬·奥斯托弗说:“此项法规表明当局承担起了保护所有美国人心脏健康的责任。希望能减少冠心病,预防每年上千例的心脏病突发。” 自19世纪末开始,猪油等动物脂肪变得越来越昂贵而稀缺,当时的化学家们开始寻找将液体油固化的方法来替代固体油脂。1901年,德国化学家威廉·诺曼将氢化技术创造性地用于液体棉籽油,得到了像黄油一样的氢化植物油,即人造反式脂肪酸。几年之后,氢化植物油的年产量达到了几千吨并且开始产业化。用氢化植物油做起酥油烘焙和煎炸食物往往会更好吃,口感也不会太油腻。关键是,氢化植物油比动物油脂性质更稳定,不用冷藏,常温贮存即可,也不容易腐坏。 研究表明,日常饮食中来自反式脂肪的热量在总热量中的比例上升2%,会显著增加冠心病的风险。基于这种风险,世界卫生组织建议,每人每天摄入的总热量中来自于反式脂肪的不宜超过1%,也就是说每天的反式脂肪摄入量不超过2克。 中国农业大学食品科学与营养工程学院副教授朱毅同时也提醒道,由于多种原因,反式脂肪并不会完全消失。“首先,反式脂肪是指分子的空间结构和天然食物中脂肪酸的结构相反,但天然食物本身也含有一定的反式脂肪。比如在牛羊肉、乳制品,水果蔬菜当中均有反式脂肪。” “其次,反式脂肪在现代食品加工工艺当中的应用非常广泛。因为它的饱和程度高,不容易被氧化。在现代食品工艺当中,如果完全抛弃反式脂肪,这在现代饮食方式,尤其是西式饮食方式当中几乎是不可能的。比如炸薯条、沙拉酱、烘焙食物等等当中都广泛存在反式脂肪。” 朱毅认为,美国FDA的公报中提及限制反式脂肪使用的总量,这是由于美国的饮食方式导致了反式脂肪对美国很大一部分人群的健康危害。但对我们中国人来说,中国平均的反式脂肪摄入量目前还不至于引起担心。国家食品安全风险评估中心2013年发布的风险评估显示,我国居民通过膳食方式摄入的反式脂肪所提供的能量占膳食总能量的0.16%,其中,城市居民为0.25% ,即使在北京、广州等大城市,97%的居民其反式脂肪所提供的能量占膳食总能量的比例也不超过0.72% ,低于世界卫生组织建议的1%的限值,也显著低于西方发达国家居民的摄入量。 朱毅认为,这得益于我们的饮食结构和方式,“含氢化油很多的糕点、披萨、三明治等食物都不是中国人膳食结构中的主要食物。不过在大城市和年轻一代中,随着饮食方式的西化,很多氢化油和反式脂肪过量的食物还是成为这一人群的选择。这说明对于他们,反式脂肪的风险仍然存在。氢化油和反式脂肪过量的食物都是高热量、高脂肪的食物,我们应该减少其总的摄入量。 如前所述,天然食品中也存在少量的反式脂肪,所以零摄入可能是无法做到的。不过朱毅表示,主动使用的反式脂肪肯定是会退出历史舞台的,将会在在食品工艺当中被逐渐淘汰、
