British people are famous for drinking tea. But brother and sister, Sarah and Bobby Green, became young millionaires when they opened a chain of American-style coffee shops in the UK.

Having the idea: It started when Sarah took a weekend trip to New York to visit her brother Bobby. One evening, in a Thai restaurant, Sarah told Bobby how much she wished she could buy American-style coffee in London. Bobby suggested they started their own coffee shop. People often pass through four stages when they enter and live in a new culture. We may meet with culture shock when we move from one culture to another.

Culture shock begins with the “honeymoon stage”. This is the time when we first arrive in which everything about the new culture is strange and exciting. We see new things, hear new sounds and language, eat new kinds of food. This stage can last for quite a long time because we feel we are very excited.

The second stage can be more difficult. After we have got used to our new life, we can become very tired and begin to miss our homeland and our family, friends, pets. All the little problems in life seem to be much bigger and more disturbing when you face them in a foreign culture. This period of cultural adjustment (调整) can be very difficult and lead to pulling away from the new culture.

The third stage is called the “adjustment stage”. This is when you begin to realize that things are not so bad in the host culture. Your sense of humor usually becomes stronger and you realize that you are becoming stronger by learning to take care of yourself in the new place. Things are still difficult, but you are now a survivor!

The next stage can be called “at ease at last”. Now you feel quite comfo rtable in your new place. You can deal with most problems that you have. You may still have problems with the language, but you know you are strong enough to deal with them.

There is a fifth stage of culture shock which many people don’t know about. This i s called “against culture shock”. Surprisingly, this happens when you go back to your own culture and find that you have changed and that things there have changed while you have been away. Now you feel a little uncomfortable back home. Life is a struggle!

P lane uses sun's power to fly

EARLIER this month, a solar-powered plane had its first successful fight. It had passed an important test before. The plane took off from an airport in Switzerland at 45km an hour. It slowly rose above the fields and into the sky.

“There was no airplane of that kind that could fly — never an airplane so big, so light, using so little energy in the past,” said Bertrand Piccard, a leader of the project.

During the 90-minute flight, the plane did several turns. It climbed nearly 1.6km above the countryside.

Engineers plan to test a night flight before July. Then they will use the results of the tests to build a second plane. They plan to travel around the world in that plane in 2012.

“We want to fly it day and night with no fuel (燃料),” Piccard said.

Piccard and the pilot Andre Borschberg will take the plane around the world. They will make a few stops to change places and rest after a long time in the air — and to show off their aircraft.

The plane flies at 70 km an hour on average. That is faster than a bike and slower than a car. The pilots will keep the plane in the air for up to five days at a time.

As a Chinese, I feel very proud and excited. The World Expo is held in Asia for the first time. It’s an honour for all the Chinese and the Asians as well.
