Cultural differences in body language may show up in different ways, such as the amount of physical touch(身体接触), the distance between people who are

talking, the communication between men and women.

For example, it's different when it comes to physical touch. In ltaly, a big hug is considered a common greeting. However, in Japan, a polite greeting is just a bow and no touch at all.

In South America, personal space is quite small. People stand very close to each other to talk, even when they don't know each other very well. However, if you go to the United States, you will find that personal space becomes much larger. People are not comfortable when others stand close to them, especially if they are not very close friends.

Cultural differences in body language are also shown in the communication between men and women. In some Asian countries, a woman may be expected to avert(转移)her eyes before a man, or walk a few steps behind a man, to show respect for the man. However, in Western cultures, men and women are able to share the equal status(平等地位)in terms of body language.

If you are planning a vacation to a foreign country, you should try to get to know a bit about the body language there. For example, if you get lost in Japan, you're much more likely to get help from a local person if you follow the local custom of bowing.
