Top lists are lecturing people on everyt hing from “100 places to visit” to “100 books to read”. Aren't you just tired of being told what to do with your time?

Now you have a list to end all lists!

Take a look at the following two examples from the list of “101 things not to do”:Swim with Dolphins(海豚)?

Swimming with dolphins is one of the world's most profitable tourist activities. However, not every dolphin will welcome having their busy, tiring day interrupted by tourists screaming and pushing around them in the water. Worse yet, when dolphins get too near to the boats loaded with tourists, they could get caught up in ropes and killed by propellers(螺旋桨).

Here's a little secret. Dolphins look like smiling at you, but actually they're just opening their mouths.

Go to See the Mona Lisa?

There must be something about the mysterious(神秘的) smile. The 6 million people who visit the lady in the Louvre every year can't all be wrong, after all. But they can be quite annoying, standing in front of you; holding up their cameras to prevent you from seeing anything. In fact, it is hard for you to see the painting clearly because you have to stay away from it for security reasons. After queuing for hours, many tourists can remain in front of the painting only for 15 seconds at most.

If the mysterious lady in the picture knew her fate, she wouldn't just be smiling, she'd be laughing.

So, still long to see the Mona Lisa? If you want to find out more about the list, read 101 Things NOT to Do Before You Die. Visit https://www.sodocs.net/doc/0b4385383.html, and buy the book at a 20% discount.

1.According to the passage, swimming with dolphins ________.

A. is the world's most popular tourist activity

B. gives fun to both tourists and dolphins

C. will make tourists busy and tired

D. can cause danger to dolphins

57. What does the author think about going to see Mona Lisa?

A. It is wrong to go and see the mysterious smile.

B. It is not as satisfying as expected.

C. Fifteen seconds in front of the painting is enough.

D. Queuing for hours is worthwhile.

58. The list of “101 things not to do” is made most probably because its author ________.

A. thinks it boring to do the things suggested by other lists

B. believes other lists are not humorous enough

C. intends to persuade people to read more lists

D.wants to provide a list different from other lists

59.What is the main purpose of the passage?

A. To advertise a book.

B. To introduce a website.

C. To comment on popular lists.

D. To recommend tourist activities.

Easter (复活节) is still a great day for worship, candy in baskets and running around the yard finding eggs, but every year it gets quite a bit worse for bunnies.

And no, not because the kids like to pull their ears. The culprit is climate change, and some researchers found that rising temperatures are having harmful effects on at least five species of rabbit in the US.

Take the Lower Keys Marsh rabbit, for instance. An endangered species that lives in the Lower Florida Keys, this species of cottontail is a great swimmer—it lives on the islands!—but it is already severely affected by development and now by rising sea levels. According to the Center for Biological Diversity, an ocean level rise of only 0.6 meters will send these ~ys jumping to higher ground and a 0.9-meter rise would wipe out their habitat (栖息地) completely.

The snowshoe hare, on the other hand, has a color issue. Most of these rabbits change their fur color from white in the wintertime to brown in the summer, each designed to give them better cover from predators (捕食者). As the number of days with snow decreases all across the country, however, more and more bunnies are being left in white fur during brown dirt days of both fall and spring, making them an easier mark for predators. Researchers know that the color change is controlled by the number of hours of sunlight, but whether the rabbit will be able to adapt quick enough to survive is a big question. The National Wildlife Federation has reported that hunters have noticed their numbers are already markedly down.

American pikas or rock rabbits, a relative of rabbits and hares, might be the first of these species to go extinct due to climate change. About 7-8 inches long, pikas live high in the cool. damp mountains west of the Rocky Mountains. As global temperatures rise, they would naturally migrate (迁移) to higher ground -- but they already occupy the mountaintops. They can't go any higher. The National Wildlife Federation reports that they might not be able to stand the new temperatures as their habitat heats up.

The volcano rabbit has the same problem. These rabbits live on the slopes of volcanoes in Mexico, and recent studies have shown that the lower range of their habitat has already shifted upward about 700 meters, but there are not suitable plants for them to move higher, so they are stuck in the middle. Scientists are concerned about their populations.

Native to the US, pygmy rabbits weigh less than 1 pound and live in the American West. They are believed to be the smallest rabbits in the world. Their habitats have been destroyed by development. Several populations, such as the Columbia Basin pygmy, almost went extinct and were saved by zoo breeding programs. Pygmy rabbits also rely on winter cover by digging tunnels through the snow to escape predators, but lesser snowfall is leaving them exposed.

All of this gives new meaning to dressing up in a giant bunny costume this Easter.

60. The writer mentions Easter at the beginning of the passage in order to ______.

A. show the importance of Easter Day

B. introduce the issue about bunnies

C. remind people of Easter traditions

D. discuss the relationship between Easter and bunnies

61. According to the passage, some rabbits can now be easily discovered by predators because they ______.

A. are exposed to more skillful hunters

B. have moved to habitats with fewer plants

C. haven't adapted themselves to climate change

D. can't change their fur color into white in the fall and the spring

62. The problem faced by volcano rabbits and rock rabbits is that ______.

A. both are affected by less snow

B. both are affected by rising sea levels

C. neither can find enough food

D. neither can migrate to higher places

For those who are tired doing the laundry, Samsung has found an answer: a washing machine that can tell you when your laundry is done via a smartphone app(application).

Strange though it may seem —“my wife already does that” was a common response among attendees viewing the device when it was introduced at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this week —Samsung is just one of many appliance makers racing to install (安装) a large number of internet-connected features in machines in an effort to make them “smart”.

Last year, it was a refrigerator that tweeted. This year, it’s Wi-Fi-enabled laundry machines and fridges that can tell you when your groceries are going bad.

The washers and dryers, available starting in the spring, connect to any smartphone through a downloadable application. The phone can then be used as a remote control, so the machines can be turned on and off while their owners is at work or on the bus.

Samsung says it’s not just something new — the app connection actually has some practical uses.

“If you started to dry clothes in the morning and forgot to take them out, you can go to your phone and restart your dryer for the time when come home, so your clothes are refreshed and ready to go,” said spokesperson Amy Schmidt.

The company also says that with electricity rate(电价)varying depending on the time of day, more control over when the machines are used can help save money.

Perhaps, but what they will probably really accomplish is what all good technologies do

—enable laziness. Rather than getting up to check on whether the laundry is done, users will instead monitor it on their phones while watching TV.

63. What can be inferred from the common response of the attendees at the CES?

A. The machine will be a big success.

B. Their wives like doing the laundry.

C. The machine is unrelated to their life.

D. This kind of technology is familiar to them.

64. What can we learn about the new laundry machines?

A. They can tell you when your clothes need washing.

B. They can be controlled with a smartphone.

C. They are difficult to operate.

D. They are sold at a low price.

65. We can conclude form Samsung’s statements that ___________.

A. the app connection makes life easier

B. it is better to dry clothes in the morning

C. smartphone can shorten the drying time

D. we should refresh clothes back at home

66. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?

A. The laundry should be frequently checked.

B. Lazy people like using such machines.

C. Good technologies also cause problems.

D. Television may help do the laundry.

Facial expressions carry meaning that is determined by situations and relationships. For example, in American culture (文化) the smile is in general an expression of pleasure. Y et it also has other uses. A woman’s smile at a police officer does not carry the same meaning as the smile she gives to a young child. A smile may show love or politeness. It can also hide true feelings. It often causes confusion (困惑) across cultures. For example, many people in Russia smiling at strangers in public to be unusual and even improper. Y et many Americans smile freely at strangers in public places (although this is less common in big cities). Some Russians believe that Americans smile in the wrong places; some Americans believe that Russians don’t smile enough. In Southeast Asian culture, a smile is frequently used to cover painful feelings. Vietnamese people may tell a sad story but end the story with a smile.

Our faces show emotions (情感), but we should not attempt to “read” people from another culture as we would “read” someone from our own culture. The fact that members of one culture do not express their emotions as openly as do members of another does not mean that they do not experience emotions. Rather, there are cultural differences in the amount of facial expressions permitted. For example, in public and in formal situations many Japanese do not show their emotions as freely as Americans do. When with friends, Japanese and Americans seem to show their emotions similarly.

It is difficult to generalize about Americans and facial expressiveness because of personal and cultural differences in the United States. People from certain cultural backgrounds in the United States seem to be more facially expressive than others. The key is to try not to judge people whose

ways of showing emotion are different. If we judge according to our own cultural habits, we may make the mistake of “reading” the other person incorrectly.

67. What does the smile usually mean in the US?

A. Love.

B. Politeness.

C. Joy.

D. Thankfulness.

68. The author mentions the smile of the V ietnamese to prove that smile can _______ .

A. show friendliness to strangers

B. be used to hide true feelings

C. be used in the wrong places

D. show personal habits

69. What should we do before attempting to “read” people?

A. Learn about their relations with others.

B. Understand their cultural backgrounds.

C. Find out about their past experience.

D. Figure out what they will do next.

70. What would be the best title for the test?

A. Cultural Differences

B. Smiles and Relationship

C. Facial Expressiveness

D. Habits and Emotions

Time for a Brainstorm

A brainstorm is a session where a small group of people come together to solve a problem. People voice spontaneous ideas, sometimes just shouting, and a note-taker writes them all down.

71 By getting different ideas out there, ideas are said to bounce off each other and even can help solve the problem at hand.Brainstorming is often a group exercise but individuals can also conduct personal brainstorms.

72 He defined it as using the brain to storm a creative problem and do so in commando (突击队) fashion, with each stormer attacking the same objective.According to him, it was easier to tone down a wild idea than think up a new one.He placed importance on the collection of as many ideas as possible and dismissed scientific thinking.

Brainstorming has become one of the most popular ways to solve problems and hold discussion in schools and businesses. Many students brainstorm for a group assignment or even for a personal essay.Sarah Grace, 24, is an Australian marketing analyst and uses brainstorming during all her creative duties. She thinks brainstorming is the best way to work as a team. The sessions get everyone on the same page, everyone moving together and with a clear understanding about the foundations of an event or idea.73

However, a big problem with brainstorming is creating a mess that leads people further away from a solution.74 If you don't have a strong moderator or leader of the brainstorm, can go really off track, and people just start discussing something totally different.Brainstorming can sometimes confuse the human brain.75 If you brainstorm too much and your page is filled up with all the messy links, you can paint yourself into a bit of corner and get trapped with ideas. Y ou need to move past brainstorming as soon as you have something workable.A.The ideas can be smart, strange or crazy.

B.It is caused by a lack of direction from a leader.

C.Brainstorming really helps her organize her thoughts.

D.Brainstorming really is the best way to build team spirit.

E.It can open too many doors and not suggest a clear direction.

F.Brainstorms were popularized in the 1940s by American advertising boss Alex Osborn.G.They can be words, phrases, paragraphs and anything that can help answer the question.

Dear Sir or Madam,

________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________

Regards,

Li Hua

此处you are welcome不用谢;I have no idea我不知道;that’s right那是正确的;never mind不介意,没关系。

lose heart意为:灰心; a second time意为:再一次,这里second表示的不是第二次,因此,不能用定冠词the。

I can’t stand all this rain可知,此处与上一句中的I’m sick and tired of the weather表达同样的感受,因此应该用So am I,表示“我也是”。

I’ll be off to London then.

Professor Smith's.

it作形式主语,真正的主语为that he had left his keys in the office。

语境为“工程师想出了一个办法”,to get automobiles across the river without getting their wheels wet 是不定式作定语,修饰所填的词。

前文交代了two minds,即the young fisherman和the engineer这两者,所以选择both“两者都”。

take long花费很长时间。take money花费钱;take strength尽力做。

The young fisherman is thinking of a way to cross the stream选C,想一个过小溪的办法,就是“做计划”。

However, the engineer's is not

根据后面的the very beginning可知,此处填D项,from the very beginning从一开始。

根据下文“The engineer can choose the type best suited to the river and the 52 nearby”,此处应该选B,即“每座桥都要适合其特殊目的”。be suited to适合。

根据前面的choose the type best suited to the river可知,此处的选择指的是:选择合适的桥,即“为什么一种桥要比其他的更为合适呢?”

101 Things NOT to Do Before Y ou Die,很明显是一则广告。

Go to See the Mona Lisa的材料中,作者列举了go to see the Mona Lisa 的诸多弊端,每年大量的游客前往参观,所以不可能有预想的观赏效果。

101 Things NOT to Do Before Y ou Die 打广告。

“my wife already does that” was a common response…

根据第一段中的…when your laundry is done via a smartphone app.

所以选A。

从最后一段…is what all good technologies do—enable laziness可以得知,这种新型洗衣机和其他科技一样,也能让我们变懒,这是一个弊端。

根据文章第一段中的“in American culture (文化) the smile is in general an expression of pleasure”可知,在美国文化中,一般地说,微笑是快乐的表情。

根据文章第一段中的“It can also hide true feelings. It often causes confusion (困惑) across cultures.”

根据文章最后一段中的“The key is to try not to judge people whose ways of showing emotion are different. If we judge according to our own cultural habits, we may make the mistake of “reading” the other person incorrectly.”

2. was→is。

3. where→which。

4. by→took。“乘车”这个意义由动词短语表示时应该用take/ride a/the bus/train等,由介词短语表示时用by bus/train等。

5. crowd→crowded。

6. was→were。主语Most of them是复数意义,故谓语动词应为were。

7. his→their。

8. are→ were。

beautiful birds与and前面的elephants, bears, lions, monkeys 并列,它们都应表示泛指,故不能在beautiful birds前面加定冠词the。

10. 在good time前加a。time表示一段时间,常出现在以下短语中:have a good/wonderful/great time, for a long time等。

One possible version:

Dear_Sir_or_Madam,

I'm Li Hua, a middle school student from China. I read the announcement of the summer camp that you have posted on the Internet and I am interested in it. I know that you welcome students from different countries and I'd like to take part in it. I've been learning English for 10

years, and I speak fluent English. What is more, I'll be able to tell students from other countries about China and learn about their countries as well. I hope I will be accepted as a member of your summer camp.

Looking forward to your reply!
