When is your birthday?

I. The analysis of teaching material:

1. Status and Function:

This unit is mainly about learning the expression of dates. The main topic is about “When is your birthday?”Then extend to the learning of listening, speaking, reading and writing. We’ll learn the ordinal numbers and learn how to use them to express the dates. And we’ll learn to use the Special Questions to ask the questions about dates. After that, students can talk about the topics for dates freely by using the words and sentences from this unit. Otherwise, we should also review the possessive nouns.

In this period, I will teach 1a-2d.1a-2d is the listening and speaking class. This is the most important and basic part in the learning of this unit. It is the foundation of the whole unit.

2.Teaching aims:

(1) Knowledge aims

Key words:

when,month,January,February,March,April,May,June,July,August,September,Octobe r,November,December,first,second,third(ordinal numbers)...

Key sentence structures:

--When is your/his/her/your father's birthday?

--My/His/Her/My father's birthday is on...

/It's on...

--How old are you?

--I'm....

(2) Ability aims

To increase the ability of listening, speaking and writing, and train their ability of creating new sentences and conversations.

(3)Emotional aims

Section A is close to students’life, they learn to talk about birthday. It can improve their friendship and know each other through asking and answering their birthday.

And it also makes students understand the expression of dates in the UK and USA.

3. Important points and Difficult points:

(1) Important points:

1. Learn the new words

2. Ask questions about people's birthday

3. Understand the consist of the ordinal numbers.

4. Practice the conversations by using the words of month and ordinal numbers.

(2) Difficult points:

1. Remember all the new words for month.

2. Distinguish the differences of cardinal numbers and ordinal numbers

II. Analysis of the students:

On the one hand, for the students in Grande seven, they have learnt English for a term. But it's the first time to contact the knowledge of the months and dates. We have learnt cardinal numbers in Unit 1 and Unit 7.Students have the conception of numbers. But it’s really difficult for them to distinguish the difference between cardinal and ordinal numbers. Teacher should guide students to find a easy way to compare them. Find and summarize the rules of the changes.

On the other hand, the students in Grade 7 are interested in English, but unsteady. They have strong curiosity but are unsatisfied with the simple repeat. And they are short of the ability of summary

Step 1 Greeting

Good morning, boys and girls.

(Good morning, Miss Wu.)

How are you? (I'm fine, thanks.)

Do you know birthday? (Yes, I do.)

So, today we'll learn birthday.

Step 2 Lead in

Play a song of months for students.(This step is to arouse their positivities and lead in our new words for unit8.)

Step 3 Learn the new words of months

Show students some picture on the computer and let them guess which months are they. Teacher choose the festivals in every month to guide students to learn the new words for month.(This step is to teach them new words and try to read all the new words.)

Step 4 Listen and repeat for 1a

Teacher plays the tape and makes students listen and repeat.(This step is trying to correct the pronunciation of students.)

Step 5 Learn the ordinal numbers

Teacher: Everyone please tell me, the first month of the year is ?

Students: January!

Then lead students to know second, third and other ordinal numbers with PPT.(This step is to teach them ordinal numbers. It’s also the foundation of the expression of dates.)

Step 6 Listen to 1b then make dialogues

Students listen to 1b,and number the conversations. Then listen and repeat the dialogues. After that, teacher will show some dates on the whiteboard, students should make dialogues with those pictures.(This step is to teach them to ask and answer the birthdays.)

Step 7 Practice in groups

Teacher show some photos of herself and some popular stars. Write down their birthday. Then,ask some students such as :Hi, Kimi, when is your birthday? Then, students should answer the questions according to the information on the whiteboard.

Then, students ask and answer their birthdays in their groups.

At last, teacher asks some students to act out their conversations.(This step is try to let students use the sentence structures to ask and answer the questions about birthday.)

Step 8 Listening exercise for 2a-2c

Students listen to tapes and finish 2a-2c.Teacher checks the answer.

Step 9 Practice in groups

Students practice the conversations in groups by using:

--When is your/his/her/your father's birthday?

--My/His/Her/My father's birthday is on...

Step 10 Summary

Summarize all the words and sentences we learn in this class.

Step 11 Homework

1.Copy the words of P43-P45,and try to memorize them.

2.Do some surveys after class, and write 5 dialogues about birthday.

3.Revise what they have learnt this class and preview what they will learn next class
