In America, each of the states likes to promote themselves with a slogan(口号). I currently live in Utah, where the slogan is "Life Elevated". It’s a nod to outdoor entertainment in the high country, including the ski industry. I previously lived in Colorado, a land with red dirt, great mountains and golden plains. The slogan there is "Colorful Colorado". Years ago I lived in the "Peach State" of Georgia, and I grew up in New Mexico as a little boy, whose slogan is "Land of Enchantment(魔力)".

We never seemed to get away from dust in New Mexico, so I appreciate the story of a newcomer to the Land of Enchantment who learned about dusty breezes. She was visiting an antique shop and the owner wiped down every item before showing it. The newcomer said, "Everything gets dusty here pretty quickly, does n’t it?""That’s not dust, honey," the shop owner replied. "That’s ENCHANTMENT."

That made the problem more acceptable, or at least live with. A Hong Kong shopping center manager was informed that an escalator(自动扶梯) broke. He posted a sign to warn customers. He chose not to use the traditional "Out of Order" or "Do Not Use" warnings. Instead, his sign read, "This Escalator Is Temporarily a Stairway." He turned a minus into humor and made it a plus.

And in fact there are some things, like the weather, we can’t change. All we can change is our ways that we think and feel about them. I believe one of the best techniques to do this is to find some humor in the situation. Finding something amusing or enjoyable of a difficulty, an irritation or a troublesome problem can be one of the most creative and effective things we can do. Almost every day we come across situations in which we have to make decisions one way or another. Choice, we are given to believe, is a right. But, for a good many people in the world, in rich or poor countries, choice is a luxury, something wonderful but hard to get, not a right. And for those who think they are exercising their right to make choices,

the whole system is merely an illusion, a false idea created by companies’ advertisers hoping to sell their products.

The endless choice gives birth to anxiety in people’s lives. Buying something as basic as a coffee pot is not exactly simple. Easy access to a wide range of everyday goods leads to a sense of powerlessness in many people, ending in the shopper giving up and walking away, or just buying an unsuitable item that is not really wanted. Recent studies in England have shown that many electrical goods bought in almost every family are not really needed. More difficult decision-making is then either avoided or trusted into the hands of the professionals, lifestyle instructors, or advisors.

It is not just the availability of the goods that is the problem, but the speed with which new types of products come on the market. Advances in design and production help quicken the process .

Products also need to have a short lifespan so that the public can be persuaded to replace them within a short time. The typical example is computers, which are almost out-of-date once they are bought. This indeed makes selection a problem. Gone are the days when one could just walk with case into a shop and buy one thing; no choice, no anxiety.

I always think of this story when my daughter is asked by other adults to apologize for her wrong doings. I know my daughter is being taught to say “sorry”with all the best intentions. They are teaching her to be polite. But she is apologizing because she is being forced to please the adult or to avert punishment.

This situation has happened on a few occasions and it really bothers me. Here are three reasons why I don’t think it’s a good idea to teach children to say sorry: 1. My daughter is being taught to say things that are not from her heart. 2. She is being taught insincerity(不真诚) is valued over genuineness. 3. She is being taught she needs to please others to be loved.

These messages make me uncomfortable and I will not ask my children to apologize. Instead, this is what I think people should teach children:

·teach them behavior that is acceptable and to practice positive behavior.

·teach them how their actions affect others.

·give them space to think about the situation and ask them to suggest ways to make the situation better.

·help them make healthy choices

·lead by example and show them how to fix wrong doings

How time flies! Unconsciously the next winter vacation will soon come. In order to improve myself as well as enjoy a happy holiday, I made the winter vacation plan.
