细说英文单词(5):一场关于英文单词本质的对话

很多同学看到了我之前的几篇连载，在产生了浓厚兴趣的同时，也由于对这种理论的初次接触而产生了些许质疑，有一名学生在我的博客中留言之后，在我的课堂门口见到了我，他的疑问和困惑很有代表性，问到了一些很精髓的问题，现在我来还原这场对话，让大家一目了然整个思考的过程。

疑问：为什么记不住“hatch-孵化”？

解答：因为你没有理解这个词为什么是“孵化”，你在单词里没有看见“孵化”这个动作的发出者，那么这个单词也就自然不能以合逻辑的方式记忆在你脑海中。

疑问：为什么一定要找出单词“hatch”中“孵化”这个动作的发出者呢？

解答：因为我们中国人也正是靠着“卵”的部分，记住整个“孵”字的。

疑问：那么“hatch”中的“卵”在哪里呢？

解答：不一定非要找“卵”，找到一个和“孵化”的含义十分密切的东西就行，那么我们再次看到单词“hatch”时就能很快地再现它的含义，因为我们有了桥梁。

疑问：这个桥梁是什么？

解答：就是单词“hatch”词首的辅音字母“h”，这里它是由“hen-母鸡”一词浓缩而来，因为正是母鸡在发出“孵化”的动作。

疑问：“母鸡”这个词知道，为什么“母鸡——hen”浓缩后变成“h”,而不是变成“e”或者“n”呢？解答：因为我们不止一次地强调过，单音节英语单词的含义在开头的首辅音字母上，从单词的第一个元音字母开始就都是表音的成分，单词“hen-母鸡”就是由“her-她”衍生而来，所以保持不变的是开头辅音字母“h”,为什么“h”不能变？因为“h”是核心！

疑问：那为什么“her”衍生之后变成“hen”呢？这其中从“r”到“n”的变化，有什么根据？

解答：这是又一次由于发音相近而讹化的文字现象，我们熟悉这样一个事情：在标准英语中的很多[r]音，经常地被印度人或者俄罗斯人发成[l]音，比如“v ery”和“friend”中的字母“r”的标准发音是[r]，而到了不标准的口音中“r”一律都变成了[l]，我也在课堂、讲座、文章中不仅一次地踢过，这种现象很普遍，简单的原因就是因为这些音太相似，在汉语中被误读的例子不也是层出不穷么？男人女人，被说成“蓝人铝人”，“想死你了”被说成“想死你鸟”，武汉方言中“不让”被讲成“不浪”，我们现在来总结这当中的规律，无非是一点—

—“[l]、[n]、[r]”三个音在任何语言中都极其容易被人们彼此混淆，所以在产生今天“her”～“hen”的变化，就很容易被接受了。

疑问：难道记住英文单词，还需要我成为一个语言学家？

解答：不用你成为语言学家，我成为就行，其实这种变化情况就是那么固定的几组，我会把这几组通常的变化总结出来，告诉大家。

疑问：那么后面的“atch”又是什么呢？

解答：在汉字“孵”中，左边成分“卵”表示整字的含义，而右边部分“孚”，和“孵”的含义没有什么关系，只是在这里起到发音的作用，所以“孵”字叫做形声字，单词“hatch”是同样的道理。

疑问：那就是说，“atch”部分我还是要死记硬背？

解答：不用，你应该对“atch”这个部分十分熟悉，比如：在“watch/mat ch/catch/patch”这些单词中你多次接触过“atch”这个部分，而这些单词中的“atch”无一例外的都是在整个单词中的执行着表音职能，那么这些单词的含义也就都是由词首的辅音字母表达的。在以后的章节中我们会详细阐述。

疑问：在您眼中单词都是分开的是么？

解答：单词是有机组合的，但是不能是割裂的。单词中的每一个字母地位不是同一的，是分主角和配角的。只有找到单词的“字眼”，也就是它表达自己信息的部分，才能理解单词的含义，进而记住它！

疑问：每个单词都这样分析一下，不累么？有必要么？

解答：磨刀不误砍柴工，过去我们不假思索地背单词，速度的确很快，但是背了100个单词，第二天回头一看，只能记住几个，这些教训大家记得么？这其实是很简单的“记得快忘得快”的道理。

疑问：那遇到我分析不明白的或者分析不正确怎么办？

解答：我会在之后出版的书中对绝大多数大学英语词汇作科学正确的分析，就是怕大家在没理解一个单词的时候就去茫然地背，结果徒劳无功。

疑问：拆分并且解释一个单词，为什么我们一定要这么做？

解答：一，因为你想要记住这个单词，是长久记住而不是一时拥有。二，理解了的东西更容易记忆。三，掌握了拆分单词的技巧之后，从拆分——理解——记忆，是一个十分容易、快乐而有意义的事情。

最后我要说，我觉得绝大多数人都相信“理解记忆”的好处和高效，但是为什么过去我们没有这么做？因为我么曾经认为英语单词“不可理解，不会理解”，那么今天开始，我带领大家一起步入领会单词的征程。
