It was the last day of final examinations in a large Eastern university. On the steps of one building, a group of engineering seniors huddled, discussing the exam due to begin in a few minutes. On their faces was confidence. This was their last exam before they went on to commencement and jobs.

Some talked of jobs they already had; others of jobs they would get. With all this assurance of four years of college study, they felt ready and able to conquer the world.

The approaching exam, they knew, would be a snap. The professor had said they could bring any books or notes they wanted, requesting only that they did not talk to each other during the test.

Jubilantly, they filed into the classroom. The professor passed out the papers. And their smiles broadened as the students noted there were only five essay-type questions.

Three hours passed. Then the professor began to collect the papers. The students no longer looked confident. On their faces was a frightened expression. No one spoke as the professor faced the class with the papers in her hand

She surveyed the worried faces before her, then asked: “How many completed all five questions?”

Not a hand was raised.

“One, then? Certainly somebody finished one.” But the class remained silent. The professor put down the papers. “That is exactly what I expected,” she s aid.

Education plays a very important role in everybody's life. We go to school because we want to know more about the world around us and at the same time extend our horizons of thinking. The typical classroom used to be the place where teachers and students were working and exploring the wonderful world of knowledge together, but now everything has changed. Technology is taking over those interactions and introducing us to a whole new approach of learning.

The Internet is one of those approaches. Learning via the Internet is a new style that many people believe is more successful than the conventional form of teaching. The Internet allows schools to develop a large amount of learning material that is accessible for students online anytime. There are so many choices of courses and subjects or time frames that completing a program is not an issue for students anymore. We found that online education gives us excellent sources of information, saves our time, money and it is extremely convenient.

Not long ago we used to go to the library every time we needed information and spent hours searching for the right sources. Today there is a "library" in our house and it is available 24 hours a day. From my personal experience, as a first time mother, I found that using information online is very helpful. While I am at home with my baby, I am still able to connect to the world and search for any educational materials I need. I am also able to exchange thoughts, opinions and information with my classmates without leaving my house.

The Internet is not only a big information provider but also saves us money and time. People are predicting that education will be much cheaper in the future because of Internet access to information.

The cost of land, buildings and wages for teachers are continuously increasing and that makes conventional education more expensive than online education. In addition, regular courses (offline) depend heavily on books and other traditional paper-based materials while online education posts lectures, notes, and assignments electronically and that saves thousands of dollars every year. There is also no need for the classroom itself because most programs online require participation in discussion and group projects via e-mail.

The Internet classes and courses are also very convenient because there are no physical restrictions as in conventional education like space and time limitations. First, in classroom-based education there is a limitation on the number of students that are allowed in each class while Internet education is available to everyone because a classroom is not an issue there. Students don't have to struggle in order to register for the classes they like. In addition, there is no time limitation so students can repeat exercises as many times as they need.

The degree to which people get involved in societies varies a great deal. Some totally immerse themselves in a club, hardly speaking to anyone who isn't a member of that group for the next three years and rising to become a leader of the organization. Others prefer to take a more eclectic approach, being members of several societies and taking part in whichever of their events seem interesting. Many people, perhaps foolishly, completely ignore University societies and just hang out with mates in college.

If you have ambitions to open up your new Shakespearian Rap Society3 to the whole University, you can register it with the University Proctors, who give out start-up grants and loans, among other benefits.

One of the downsides, especially with larger societies, is the hacking which takes place. 'Hack' is the negative term applied to those seeking advancement (usually to President) in whatever Club or Society, and some clubs such as the Oxford Union or the Guild Society tend to attract those with the spark of ambition more than others. When students suddenly remember their blank CVs5 which are supposed to secure them a highly paid job once they graduate, hackery is almost inevitable. Do not be afraid, though: the vast majority of students tend to avoid such self-seeking behaviour and get on with life.

With over 300 registered societies there really is something for everyone. You won't get bored.

Marcela's Work Experience

I decided early in my college years that I wanted to experience living abroad before entering in the "real world." During my senior year, while most of my friends were interviewing for "real world" jobs, I was investigating how I could go work in a different country. At that early stage of my inquiry I was pretty open about where to go and what kind of work to undertake. My desire to live abroad was so strong that I was willing to do anything anywhere.

进大学不久我就下定决心，在进入"现实世界"前先到国外呆一段。四年级的时候，我的大多数同学都在忙着为"现实世界"的工作面试，我却在研究怎么才能去另外一个国家工作。刚开始打听的时候，我对去哪儿，干什么都很随便。我就是很想出国，让我干什么都行。

Soon I learned about BUNAC, a program that seemed to be designed precisely for students with such interests. BUNAC offers work visas for students or recent graduates to work overseas. Of the six countries available, I chose England because of the language and opportunities for employment.

不久我就听说了一个叫"北美学生英国大学俱乐部"的计划，像是专为想出国工作的学生制定的。它给在读或是刚毕业的学生提供工作签证，让他们能到海外工作。因为语言相通和找工作容易的关系，在六个可供选择的国家中我选择了英国。

Two months after I graduated from college I crossed the Atlantic. I traveled throughout Europe for six weeks before arriving in London. I got to London on August 24, 1997 with a work visa, but no job or place to live. I have to admit it was pretty scary! The day after I arrived, I experienced my first British holiday-Bank Holiday, a national holiday where everything is closed for the day. It wasn't until my third day that I visited the BUNAC office and went through orientation. At the orientation I learned all about living and working in Britain; I learned about getting around in the city, making a CV (Curriculum Vitae-British resume), paying taxes, getting health insurance, traveling around Britain, finding accommodations and most importantly, finding a job. I was most scared about finding a job since my financial resources were running low and I needed to get a paycheck soon.

It turns out that finding a job was just as easy as making a CV! The BUNAC program is very well known in London and many employers participate in the program. As a result there are many employers in many different fields to choose from. My job search began when I chose three different business employers and faxed them my cover letter1 and CV. That first week I had three interviews. I accepted my first offer working for Merrill Lynch International Bank. The Merrill Lynch office I worked at was in a beautiful, old building located two blocks from Buckingham Palace. The people were nice and the work interesting.

It was easy to adjust to life in London. And there is so much to see that after six months exploring I probably covered only half of what I intended.

Working in London has many advantages. For one, I truly get to learn the culture by being immersed in its workforce. Most of my coworkers were British so I feel like I really got to know and learn the British culture through such a huge aspect of a British person's daily life. Secondly, it is an economical way to live and travel in another country since most jobs pay enough to cover rent, living expenses and some travel expenses. And thirdly, I have the chance to gain valuable work experience and internationalize my resume.

Information, Please

When I was quite young, I discovered that somewhere inside the telephone lived an amazing person - "Information Please" and there was nothing she did not know.

My first personal experience with this person came one day while my mother was out. Amusing myself at the tool bench, I hit my finger with a hammer. The pain was terrible, but there was no one home to give me any sympathy. I walked around the house sucking my pounding finger, finally arriving at the telephone!

Quickly, I unhooked the receiver and held it to my ear. “Informatio n Please," I said into the mouthpiece. After a click or two, a small clear voice spoke into my ear.

"Information."

hurt my finger. . ." I wept loudly. The tears came readily enough, now that I had an audience.

When my pet canary died. I told "Information Please" the sad story. She tried to soothe me. But, I was not consoled. I asked her, "Why is it that birds should sing so beautifully and bring joy to all families, only to end up as a heap of feathers on the bottom of a cage?" She must have sensed my deep concern, for she said quietly, "Paul, always remember that there are other worlds to sing in." Somehow I felt better. Another day I was on the telephone, “How do you spell …grateful?? "

All this took place in a small town in the Pacific Northwest. When I was 9, we moved to Boston.

As I grew into my teens, the memories of those childhood conversations never really left me. I appreciated now how patient, understanding, and kind she was to have spent her time on a little boy.

Be a Volunteer——Experience of a Volunteer at the Sydney Olympics

争当志愿者---一名悉尼奥运会志愿者的经历

The Sydney Olympics offered me an opportunity to learn more about staging a major multi-sport event and this knowledge, I felt, would stand me in good stead as I developed the media services that would be needed for our Salt Lake City Winter Games in 2002.

悉尼奥运会使我有机会对承办大型体育盛会有了进一步的了解，我觉得这一知识对我十分有益，因为我所提供的媒体服务也将是我们承办的2002年盐湖城冬奥会所需要的。

I also decided that working as a volunteer would give me a greater understanding of a whole range of issues which is why I joined the ranks of those working in the front line.

But little did I suspect just how much the experience would offer me such powerful feelings and a strong sense of pride - emotions which influence the many memories that I took away with me when I left Sydney.

I immediately bonded with others in the same uniform and as we passed each other in the street dressed in our colorful outfits, we smiled and said "G'day" to each other and those greetings continued throughout the two weeks of the Olympics.

My job was as a supervisor in the Main Press Center where I managed 800 journalists' desks, the telephones, the banks of televisions and other volunteers, many of whom were media students. Our shifts were eight hours long and often overnight as the Center was open 24 hours, but we generally stayed longer out of choice as the work was important and exciting. Without us the journalists would not get their articles back to their home news desks and the stories of the emotional highs and lows of the competitors would never reach the outside world.

Sophia Stella, a sophomore at Columbia?s School of Engineering, is one of many undergraduates who become involved, one way or another, in research performed at the university. Some do it for academic credit, some for money, some just for experience. Students and professors agree that an undergraduate research project can be uniquely beneficial to both parties.

When students see a discipline as evolving rather than fixed, they usually get a lot more excited about learning because they see t hat it?s an ongoing process.” He points out that research can be exciting because “a research project really gives students an opportunity to answer real-life questions that we don?t know the answers to.”

Research also spurs independent thinking and intellectual confidence in students. Amelia, a graduate student in computer science, says, "You had to go out and learn on your own. Her fond memories of work as an undergraduate researcher played an important role in her decision to leave her Wall Street programming job and return to Columbia as a graduate student.

It's a process of looking for holes and trying to plug them, which is completely different from the classroom experience of learning what others already know. He also describes how creating a piece of original research instilled a "pride of authorship" in his work, something he hadn't found in his regular classes.

Most undergraduates doing research are working for credit. They register for a semester-long course and do a project for a professor who gives them a grade for their efforts. In some departments a research project might constitute an honors thesis.
