Ⅳ.Reading Comprehension

(1)

Presently I got up and dressed, stuck my violin under my jacket, and went out into the streets to try my luck. It was now or never. I must face it now, or pack up and go back home. I wandered about for an hour looking for a likely spot, feeling as though I were about to commit a crime. Then I stopped at last under a bridge near the station and decided to have a go.

I felt nervous and shaky. It was the first time, after all. I drew the violin from my coat like a gun. It was here, in Southampton, with trains roaring overhead, that I was about to declare myself. One moment l was part of the hurrying crowds, the next I stood apart, my back to the wall, my hat on the pavement before me, the violin under my chin.

The first notes I played were loud and raw, like a hoarse declaration of war, then they settled down and began to run more smoothly and to stay more or less in tune. To my surprise, I was neither arrested nor told to shut up. Indeed nobody took any notice at all. Then an old man, without stopping, stealthily threw a penny into my hat as though to get rid of some guilty evidence.

Other pennies followed, slowly but steadily, dropped by shadows who appeared not to see or hear me. It was as though the note of the violin touched some subconscious nerve--like a baby's cry that had to be answered. When I'd finished the first tune there was a shilling in my hat; it seemed too easy, like a confidence trick. But I was high-spirited; I felt wherever I went from here this was a trick I could always live by.

Why was the Bastille important to the citizens of Paris? The building of the Bastille had been started in 1370 under Charles V. By the seventeenth century it had ceased to be important for defence. Cardinal Richelieu turned it into a prison. It was not an ordinary prison to punish common crimes. Its huge doors closed only on enemies of the King. The Bastille's workings were secret. Prisoners were taken to it in closed carriages. Soldiers on guard duty had to stand with their faces to the wall. No talking was allowed. Worst of all, a prisoner never knew if he would be there a day, a week, a year, or forever. Only the King's letter could set him free.

Over the years the number of arrests by King's letter had become fewer. By the time of its fall, most of the prisoners were writers who had written against the corrupt deeds of the government. Voltaire, the famous French writer, spent a year there in 1717 ~ 1718, and another 12 days in 1726.

For those who believed in free speech and free thinking, the Bastille stood for everything evil. The day it was captured, the "Conquerors of the Bastille" found only seven prisoners inside. Nevertheless, the Bastille was hated by the people. It was a symbol of the King's complete power.

According to her height and weight she should be a guard for the rich. She has iron-willed blood, one shoulder is lower than the other, and she bites her fingernails. But she is the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. She should be. She has worked on that body and face for more than sixty years. The course for that kind of beauty can’t be rushed.

The lines in her face have been earned one at a time. The thick one around the lips became deeper with every pain and hurt. The thin ones on the forehead appeared when the first child was born.

The eyes are protected by glasses now, but still full of life. These are eyes that have shone with pride, shared in anger and burned from lack of sleep. They are now direct and sharp and look at you when you speak.

The bent back developed slowly. She had carried home her babies who were too sleepy to walk, heavy bags from the car, rubbish out of the house while her husband was at war.

The legs are still in shape, but the step is slow. They ran too often for the bus. They stood a little too long when she worked in the department store. They got beat up while teaching her daughter to ride a two-wheeler. They are dark red at the back of the knees.

The hands? They are small but able. They are rough because they did washing, cooking, and sewing for the family and cleaning for the department store all the year round.

Once a week my aunt would announce, “I am going to have my bath today.”

Now most people find it fairly simple to have a bath. You probably remember how it goes. You enter the bathroom, you put the plug in, turn on the hot water, get into the bath, wash, sing, get out and dry yourself. My aunt's attitude toward it was more calm and determined, like those long films where people seem to be climbing up the same flight of stairs forever.

My aunt would first slowly collect her clean linen, so as to have it all ready for changing into after her bath. This involved sorting out(整理) her linen, which took up most of the morning. Sometimes she would find an old letter buried among her linen, become interested in the memories it brought and have to put off the bath until the next day. But if all went well, she would have a bite of lunch and start Step Two around two o'clock.

Step Two was washing out the bath. She would wash the bath very thoroughly, rinse(冲洗) it with running cold water, rewash it and then carefully feel the whole surface with her fingers. If there was the slightest blemish(污点), she would clean the whole bath out again. This took about an hour. Then she would fill the bath.

By this time she was feeling a bit hungry. So she would put on the kettle(水壶) for a cup of tea. Several cups of tea and several cream cakes later, she would go back to the bathroom. And find the water cold.

(file, surround, define as, approach)

Unit 1 Personal Relationship In-Class Reading The Gift of Life

Book One Unit Four Passage One Directions: You will have 10 minutes to read this passage quickly and answer the following questions from A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice. Youth Speak If you think the English language is getting shorter, you may be right. From news bytes to text-messaging to famously shorter attention spans, we're saying less—and relying on slang more. Why? With so much of our daily communications taking place online these days—and that doesn’t include just e-mail, but text-messaging on increasingly teenier devices—it seems everyday English has been reduced to a code of accepted abbreviations, mysterious combinations of numbers and letters, and even symbols masquerading as facial expressions. :) Often in all lowercase(小写字母) letters. Certain numbers, “2” and “4” in particular, play starring roles—replacing, respectively, “to” and “for”—but the far more interesting development is the embrace of the number “3” for the letter “e” (“b3” and “th3”), and the number “8” for the sound it makes (“gr8” and “l8r” for “great” and “later”). While some of these brave new acronyms(首字母缩拼词) can actually be self-explanatory (“u” for “you” and “ur” for “your”) or fairly logical (“b4” for “before”), or can highlight the sounds the letters ma ke (“qt” for “cutie” and “cu” for “see you”) or act as abbreviations (“cuz” for “because”), or can be just straightforward acronyms (“bff” for “best friends forever”), some do border on strange (“peeps” for “people”). Some terms that have been in circulati on for quite a while are pretty recognizable: “lol” (“laughing out loud”), “btw” (“by the way”), and “imho” (“in my humble opinion”). Some, meanwhile, are puzzling: “iykwim” (“if you know what I mean”), “mtfbwy” (“may the force be with you”), and “wysiwyg”(“what you see is what you get”). At times, this alphabet-soup vernacular (本国语,俗语) feels absolutely confusing to everyone but linguists and computer geeks. But it’s difficult to argue with it s speed—or even its necessity—when forced to use a toothpick-sized device to reply to an office memorandum (备忘录) while driving a car (not recommended or legal but, unfortunately, all too common). With the exception of “peeps,” though, all of the above examples are mostly used in written slang. Spoken slang is a whole o ther story. And it’s here that the younger generation truly has its say (pun intended). Today’s slang changes faster than yesterday’s password. That’s because words that were popular only a couple of years ago have lost favor—among t oday’s teens—for no reason at all. These include: “sweet”, “excellent”, and “awesome” (which all mean “good”). But, then, slang is short-lived by nature. In order for slang to be slangy, it has to have a feeling of perpetual newness. Slang is like fashion: never “in” for long. Americans eventually tire of even the most popular words, and by natural selection, only the strong survive.
