Unit One An Image or a Mirage

V. Translation

A.

If you want a winning image with others, your first concern must be a winning self-image. The individual who has a losing self-image will never be able to project a winning image to others. He may be able to fool some people for a while, but his poor self-image will eventually make it impossible for him to relate favorably to others. Throughout the ages, great philosophers have stated, “Y ou are what you think you are.” It is imperative for you to have good image of yourself if you want to create the same impression in others.

No matter who you are, everything worthwhile will depend on your own self-image. Y our happiness will be based on it. Y ou will live only one life, and in order to enjoy it, you must have a winning self-image. Since we can all choose how we want to think ourselves, we should try to have positive, winning thoughts. In your own attempt to build a winning image you must begin with the self — otherwise, the

image you strive for will be supported by nothing but a sand foundation.

Any athlete will tell you that you must know you’re a winner in order to be one. To many, this kind of message will sound like double-talk, but it contains an essential truth. Although you can apply this same message to anything in life, I will use athletics as the basis for illustrating my thoughts about self-images because sports involve physical exertion by which desired results can be achieved.

Unit Two Is Love An Art?

V. Translation

A.

Intimacy, passion, and commitment are the warm, hot, and cold vertices of Sternberg’s love triangle. Alone and in combination they give rise to eight possible kinds of love relationships. The first is nonlove—absence of all three components. This describes the large majority of our personal relationships, which are simply

causal interactions.

The second kind of love is liking. “If you just have intimacy”, Sternberg explains, “that’s liking. Y ou can talk to the person, tell about your life. And if that’s all there’s to it, that’s what we mean by liking.” It refers to the feelings experienced in true friendships. Liking includes such feelings as closeness and warmth but not the intense feelings of passion or commitment.

If you just have passion, it’s called infatuated love—“love at first sight” that can arise almost instantaneously and dissipate just as quickly. It involves a high degree pf physiological arousal but not intimacy or commitment. It’s the 10th-grader who falls madly in love with the beautiful girl in his biology class but never gets up the courage to talk to her or get to know her.

Empty love is commitment without intimacy or passion, the kind of love sometimes seen in a 30-year-old marriage that has become stagnant. The couple used to be intimated, but they don’t talk to each other any more. They used to be passionate, but that’s died out. All that remains is the commitment to stay with the other person. In societies in which marriage are arranged, Sternberg points out, empty love may precede the other kind of love.

Unit Five Solve that Problem---with Humor

V. Translation

A.

A sense of humor is universally considered the most valuable asset in a person’s personality. It is born within every person's heart, but it has to be cultivated. A person without a sense of humor is just like a spring without flowers or a dish without seasoning. In a sense, your personality lies in your sense of humor.

Humor can enhance physical as well as mental well being. It helps us relieve pressure, reduce tension, helps us overcome our frustrations, relax our muscles, and dissolve countless trifles and irritations offered by day to day life. With the cracking of a joke, all of our worries, sadness and fatigue disappear like mist and we are full of vigor once again. Besides, humor helps us live in harmony with others. With it you can always stay on good terms with others.

One way to cultivate a sense of humor is to have a wide range of knowledge about many topics so that the slightest differences in meaning of a joke can be fully understood; otherwise we would be simply at a loss in such a situation. Another crucial point in developing a sense of humor is to have a rich imagination. Nothing can be worse than the lack of imagination to kill an otherwise funny joke.

A sense of humor is one of the ways in which we relax and recreate ourselves. The things we find humorous may vary, but to have a sense of humor is very important and should be cultivated to get the most out of life.

Unit Six The Media and the Ethics of Cloning

V. Translation

A.

B.

Science remains to be a two-edged sword ever since. But to judge whether a certain scientific progress is beneficial to the human beings or not will mainly depend on how the human beings treat it and get it applied properly. We should not stop our efforts simply because it seems temporarily unreasonable. Actually, cloning technique, like atomic energy, can be both a blessing as well as a curse. But the nature of “fear for technology” lies in the fear of misusing the technology instead of fear for technology itself.

At present, the attitudes towards cloning humans in the countries of the world tend to be very “ambiguous”. For e xample, in Britain, a proposed law of allowing scientists to clone the early embryo of humans was voted through last year by the majority of two thirds while in America, Germany and Australia, more voices are heard to require loosening the restrictions of therapeutic cloning. We can definitely say that whichever country that masters the technique of cloning human beings first will win the advantages and initiative while the countries which lag behind will suffer from the unpredictable losses. America’s mast ery of the technique of atomic energy is a good case in point. Despite the fact that such technique presents its harmful influence at the outset, yet the other countries still have to follow it by quickening their researches and experiments in this aspect. Simply taken from this angle, it is worth thinking about simply taking negative attitudes towards the experiments of cloning humans.

Unit Eight The Business World as Hunting Ground

V. Translation

A.

B.

The first requirement for the acquisition of power by the Positive Woman is to understand the differences between men and women. Y our outlook on life, your faith, your behavior, your potential for fulfillment, all are determined by the factors of your original premise. The Positive Woman starts with the assumption that she is capable of doing whatever she wants to (the world is her oyster). She rejoices in the creative capability with her body and the power potential of her mind. She understands that

men and women are different, and that those very differences provide the key to her success as a person and fulfillment as a woman.

The women’s liberationist, on the other hand, is imprisoned by her own negative view of herself and of her place in the world around her. This view of women was most succinctly expressed in an advertisement de signed by the principal women’s liberationist organization, the National Organization for Women (NOW), and run in many magazines and newspapers and as spot announcements on many television stations. The advertisement showed a darling curlyheaded girl with the caption: “This healthy, normal baby has a handicap. She was born female.”

Flowers are among the most frequently given gifts. There’s a traditional floral language, and a carefully selected bouquet or plant can convey a wide range of emotions and sentiments. Red roses symbolize love as well as the hopeful beginning of a new enterprise; violets beseech the recipient not to forget the donor; orchids and other exquisite blooms indicate that the recipient regards you as exotic, precious and rare.A floral gift that evokes warm recollections will be prized more than one that is simply showy and extravagant. A customer asked a florist to deliver a bouquet of a certain variety of rose—yellow tinged with red—to a hospital where her mother lay seriously ill. “They’ve been my mother’s favorite flowers since she carried them a t her wedding many years ago,” she said. The florist found the flowers she wanted after a week of searching. The customer’s mother was delighted at the sight of the flowers.

In addition, a floral gift can also strengthen the emotional ties between husband and wife. A doctor, on his 57th birthday, received an ambitious floral gift. When he returned home from work, much to his joyful surprise, he found his front lawn turned into a rose garden containing 57 bushes. “It was a wonderful, self-renewing gift from my wife—a constant reminder of her.” he said.

Controversy surrounding the morality of euthanasia has been heightened in recent years because of advances in medical technology that makes it possible for human beings to be kept alive almost indefinitely, even when severely impaired. As a man’s life span lengthens, more and more people will reach a high age when illness and disability create the possibility for euthanasia. If a patient’s conditions are deteriorating, making him unable to make a rational choice, decisions to prolong or terminate life must be left to his family, doctors, and courts. But unfortunately the definition of “life” is still at issue. A person may be declared “brain dead” while his vital organs still function. Some people regard the problems posed by euthanasia as essentially religious. They think that life is sacred, no matter how severely disabled the patient may be; nobody can make a decision

whether he or she should stay alive or not. Some others insist that death may be preferable to a severely impaired life. Euthanasia thus becomes an act of charity

Psychologically there are two dangers to be guarded against in old age. One of these is undue absorption in the past. It does not do to live in memories, in regrets for the good old days, or in sad ness about friends who are dead. One’s thoughts must be directed to the future, and to things about which there is something to be done. This is not always easy; one’s own past is a gradually increasing weight. It is easy to think to oneself that one’s emotions used to be more vivid than they are, and one’s mind more keen. If this is true it should be forgotten, and if it is forgotten it will probably not be true. The other thing to be avoided is clinging to youth in the hope of sucking vigor from its vitality. When your children are grown up they want to live their own lives, and if you continue to be as interested in them as you were when they were young, you are likely to become a burden to them, unless they are unusually callous. This does not mean that one should be without interest in them, but one’s interest should be contemplative and, if possible, philanthropic, but not unduly emotional. Animals become indifferent to their young as soon as their young can look after themselves, but human beings, owing to the length of infancy, find this difficult.

Spectator sports provide an outlet for viewing the vitality of youth, speed, and strength. The levels of skill displayed fascinate people. Men identify more directly than most women with spectator sports because of their childhood experience and the macho nature of most games. For men there is an additional attraction in their minds that because they are male they could be called on to be there on field, asked to contribute their playing or coaching skills. Viewing sport thus provides the raw material for dreams. Nevertheless, women too feel vicarious satisfaction of a desire to win, and more women are becoming active in competitive sports.

By the early 1970s, growing fan interest in the games, heightened by network television, had transformed professional sports into lucrative business enterprises. As a result, entirely new leagues sprang up to compete with established organizations and lure away players with attractive salaries. As sports became more like traditional businesses, players increasingly turned to agents to represent them in salary negotiations. Now professional sports have entered a new era.

Unit 1 Translation of Text

“Business happens 24/7/365, which means that competition happens 24/7/365, as well,” says Haut. “One way that companies win is by getting …there? faster, which means that you not only have to mobilize all of the functions that support a business to move q uickly, but you have to know how t o decide where …there? is! This creates a requirement not only for people who can act quickly, but for those who can think fast with the courage to act on their convictions. This needs to run throughout an organization and is not exclusive to management.” Lastly, professional status encompasses adherence to ethical standards. Most lawyers find self worth in setting an example—both within the profession and within the larger society—as ethical actors. When management affirms the special respect due to lawyers who act with the utmost integrity and civility in all of their professional dealings, it provides yet another form of compensation. Much research shows that the quality of care infants receive affects how they later get along with friends, how well they do in school, how they react to new and possibly stressful situations, and how they form and maintain loving relationships as adults. It is for these reasons thatpeople's early intimate relationships within their family of origin1 are so critical. Children who are raised in impersonal environments (orphanage, some foster homes, or unloving families) show emotional and social underdevelopment, language and motor skills retardation, and mental health problems. What attracts individuals to each other in the first place? Many people believe that "there's one person out there that one is meant for" and that destiny will bring them together. Such beliefs are romantic but unrealistic. Empirical studies show that cultural norms and values, not fate, bring people together We will never meet millions of potential lovers because they are "filtered out" by formal or informal rules on partner eligibility due ton factors such as age, race, distance, Social class, religion, sexual orientation, health, or physical appearanc e. Yoga routines can take anywhere from 20 minutes to two or more hours, with one hour being a good time investment to perform a sequence of postures and a meditation. Some yoga routines, depending on the teacher and school, can be as strenuous as the most difficult workout, and some routines merely stretch and align the body while the breath and heart rate are kept slow and steady. Yoga achieves its best results when it is practiced as a daily discipline, and yoga can be a life-long exercise routine, offering deeper and more challenging positions as a practitioner becomes more adept. The basic positions can increase a person?s strength, flexibility and sense of well-being almost immediately, but it can take years to perfect and deepen them, which is an appealing and stimulating aspect of yoga for many.

Unit One An Image or a Mirage V. Translation A. B.
