BEIJING Jan 7, 2009: China's Liu Xiang will probably not defend his world 110m hurdles title in Berlin later this year because of the injury that forced him out of the Beijing Olympics, his coach told local media on Wednesday.
The 25-year-old former world record holder and Olympic champion had surgery on the injured foot last month but will not be back in competitive form in time for the August 15-23 world championships, Sun Haiping told Titan Sports.
"Liu will not attend the worlds unless he is able to run at least 13.20 seconds before that, otherwise it makes no sense for us to go to Berlin," said Sun.
"That is likely to be too difficult for him ... He might be eliminated after the first heat and that would be terribly damaging to his confidence."
The Athens Olympic gold medallist Liu was robbed of the chance of defending his title on home soil last August by the Achilles' injury.
He has been away from the track since his dramatic departure from the Bird's Nest stadium on August 18 and is currently undergoing rehabilitation in the U.S.
Liu could be back in training as early as April, but the highly competitive world championships need at least half a year to prepare for, Sun said.
"He will probably return to competitive running at the Shanghai Grand Prix in September," he said. "Our key target is the London Olympics."
Cuban Dayron Robles, who took the world record and Olympic title away from Liu last year, will be favourite to win his first 110 metres hurdles world title in Berlin. He finished fourth behind Liu in Osaka in 2007.

A young man learns what’s most important in life from the guy next door.
It had been some time since Jack had seen the old man. College, girls, career, and life itself got in the way. In fact, Jack moved clear across the country in pursuit of his dreams. There, in the rush of his busy life, Jack had little time to think about the past and often no time to spend with his wife and son. He was working on his future, and nothing could stop him.
Over the phone, his mother told him, “Mr. Belser died last night. The funeral is Wednesday.” Memories flashed through his mind like an old newsreel as he sat quietly remembering his childhood days.
“Jack, did you hear me?”
“Oh, sorry, Mom. Yes, I heard you. It’s been so long since I thought of him. I’m sorry, but I honestly thought he died years ago,” Jack said.
“Well, he didn’t forget you. Every time I saw him he’d ask how you were doing. He’d reminisce about the many days you spent over ‘his side of the fence’ as he put it,” Mom told him.
“I loved that old house he lived in,” Jack said.
“You know, Jack, after your father died, Mr. Belser stepped in to make sure you had a man’s influence in your life,” she said
“He’s the one who taught me carpentry,” he said. “I wouldn’t be in this business if it weren’t for him. He spent a lot of time teaching me things he thought were important…Mom, I’ll be there for the funeral,” Jack said.
As busy as he was, he kept his word. Jack caught the next flight to his hometown. Mr Belser’s funeral was small a nd uneventful. He had no children of his own, and most of his relatives had passed away.
The night before he had to return home, Jack and his Mom stopped by to see the old house next door one more time.
Standing in the doorway, Jack paused for a moment. It was like crossing over into another dimension, a leap through space and time. The house was exactly as he remembered. Every step held memories. Every picture, every piece of furniture….Jack stopped suddenly.
“What’s wrong, Jack?” his Mom asked.
“The box is gone.” he said.
“What box?” Mom asked.
“There was a small gold box that he kept locked on top of his desk. I must have asked him a thousand times what was inside. All he’d ever tell me was ‘the thing I value most’.” Jack said.
It was gone. Everything about the house was exactly how Jack remembered it, except for the box. He figured someone from the Belser family had taken it.
“Now I’ll never know what was so valuable to him.” Jack said.
“I better get some sleep. I have an early flight home, Mom.”
It had been about two weeks since Mr. Belser died. Returning home from work one day, Jack discovered a note in his mailbox “Signature required on a package. No one at home. Please stop by the main post office within the next three days.” the note read.
Early the next day Jack retrieved the package. The small box was old and looked like it had been mailed a hundred years ago. The handwriting was difficult to read, but the return address caught his attention. “Mr. Harold Belser” it read. Jack took the box out to his car and ripped open the package. There inside was the gold box and an envelope. Jack’s hands shook as he read the note inside.
“Upon my death, please forward this box and its contents to Jack Bennett. It’s the thing I valued most in my life.” A sm all key was taped to the letter. His heart racing, as tears filling his eyes, Jack carefully unlocked the box. There inside he found a beautiful gold pocket watch.
Running his fingers slowly over the finely etched casing, he unlatched the cover. Inside he found these words engraved:
“Jack, Thanks for your time! -Harold Belser.”
“The thing he valued most was…my time”
Jack held the watch for a few minutes, then called his office and cleared his appointments for the next two days. “Why?” Janet, his assistant asked.
“I need some time to spend with my son,” he said, “Oh, by the way, Janet, thanks for your time!”

From now on, never spend your precious time thinking of reasons for your failures and shortcomings. Instead, realize that the seeds of success were planted within you when you were born. Only you have the power to make those seeds grow.
The seeds, and the power to grow them, are contained in the most awesome machine ever created:the human mind. Success is a choice and not a chance. You were born a winner. You were born rich. You can be a success if only you make the right choice.
You cannot be successful without first developing your self-esteem. Your level of self-esteem is always based on the degree of control that you are able to exercise over yourself, and thus over your life. People with low self-esteem are people who do not believe that they have any power, or responsibility for their lives. They are the perennial(长期的) victims and martyrs. They are leaves tossed(摇摆) by the winds of chance blown about with any sudden change in the weather.
You can exercise control over your life only to the degree that you believe that you are responsible for everything that happens in your life. Failures think that everything happens by accident and chance. Successful people realize that they are responsible.
Everything happens as a result of something. If we can identify the cause, we can control the effect. We are responsible for what we choose to think and believe. One generally rises to the level that one expects. We are responsible for setting our expectations. Our success is dependent upon our level of confidence.
If you associate with positive-thinking people, you are definitely going to achieve success. On the contrary, the opposite happens. We are responsible for finding, planting, and nurturing the seeds that contain future victory, born from setbacks.
In short, in all areas of your life, whether they be financial, physical, emotional, or spiritual, you are responsible. Once you recognize this, accept it, and firmly believe it, you are on the road to success.
52. People with low self-esteem are compared to leaves because they _________________ .

B. working hard will lead to success
C. their failure is only because of bad luck
D. they don’t make efforts to succeed
54. It can be inferred from paragraph 5 that .
A. whether we will succeed depends on our attitudes
B. developing confidence is the key to future success
C. thoughts and beliefs are the result of creative mind
D. setting our expectations is essential before taking action
55. The last paragraph serves as .
A. t he proof of the author’s points
B. the conclusion of the argument
C. an introduction to another topic
D. a comparison between two views
56. Which is the best title for the text?

A long-awaited final report from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) concludes that foods from healthy cloned animals and their offspring(后代) are as safe as those from ordinary animals, effectively removing the last US regulatory(监管的) barrier to the marketing of meat and milk from cloned cattle, pigs and goats.
The 968-page final report, not yet released but obtained by The Washington Post, finds no evidence to support people’s concerns that food from clone s may have hidden risks.
But, recognizing that a majority of consumers are wary of food from clones—and that
cloning could damage the good image of American milk and meat—the report includes hundreds of pages of raw(原始的) data so that others can see how it came to its conclusions.
The report also admits that human health concerns are not the only subject raised by the coming-out of cloned farm animals.
“Moral, religious and ethical concerns have been raised,” the agency notes in a document accompanying the r eport. But the report is “exactly a science-based evaluation.” It reports, because the agency is not authorized by law to consider those subjects.
In practice, it will be years before foods from clones make their way to store shelves in large quantities, in part because the clones themselves are too valuable to kill for meat or milk. Instead, the expensive animals—replicas(复制品) of some of the finest farm animals ever born—will be used firstly as breeding stock to create what supporters say will be a new generation of superior farm animals.
When food from those animals hits the market, the public may yet have its say. FDA officials have said they do not expect to require food from clones to be labeled as such, but they may allow foods from ordinary animals to be labeled as not from clones.
57. What can we infer from the first paragraph?
A.FDA has waited for a long time to get this final report.
B.Products from cloned animals have been put into the market before.
C.People are having the products from cloned animals safely.
D.There have been once opposite opinions against cloned products.
58. What does the underl ined word “wary” mean?
A. Disappointed.
B. Careful.
C. Fond.
D. Proud.
59. It will be a few years before foods from clones come into the market, partly because _____.
A.people have little knowledge of the cloned animals
B.supporters can’t give po werful evidence to support that
C.the few cloned animals will first be used to create superior animals
D.they are a new generation for the customers and are too valuable for the customers
60. What can we conclude from the passage?
A.FDA officials encourage people to eat more food from clones.
B.FDA officials think the food from clones will sell better than ordinary food.
C.People only worry about the health problems when it comes to foods from the clones.
D.All the foods will not have detailed labels on them.

One possible version:
Recently a survey entitled “Should museums be free to the public?” was conducted to find out people’s attitudes towards this question.
Opinions are found to vary.
67.9% of the people surveyed believe that museums should be free to the public as they are important places for both education and entertainment. They say that free museum entrance will attract more visitors, which will no doubt contribute to promoting knowledge and culture. The more museums open their doors to the public for free, the more people they will benefit.
14.9% hold the opinion that museums should only be free for certain special groups, such as students, soldiers and the disabled. Besides, the times that entrance is provided free for the groups should be strictly regulated.
However, 17.2% believe that, to keep the museums functioning well, museums should charge visitors an entrance fee. In addition, to attract more visitors, museums, should try to figure out visitors’ expectations and offer better service instead of free entrance.
