剑桥城的叹息桥。在剑桥大学所有的桥中，叹息桥的名气最大。据说，维多利亚女王参观这座桥时，赞叹不已：“这么秀丽！这么别致！”

叹息桥位于圣·约翰学院，建于1831年，连接了该学院的老庭（The Old Court）与新庭。它类似一座廊桥，分上、中、下三层。下层是半个椭圆形的桥孔，横跨在剑河上；中间是一条通道，即长廊。与其他长廊不同的是，它的道面不是平直的，而是拱形的，行人过桥要上下坡。桥的两边是半封闭的，相互对称的五对用钢筋拦护的拱顶水泥框架的玻璃窗，用来采光；上层是平顶，类似一般水泥大桥的桥面，顶面的两边均衡地耸立着相互对称的塔尖状装饰。整座桥身的外观呈浅黄色。

有关它的故事，流传着不同的版本。有人说，剑桥大学的毕业考试很严格，平时不努力学习的学生，考试通不过，拿不到文凭，往往来到这里叹息、流泪，后悔莫及。因此，校方把它定名为叹息桥，以此来警示学生要勤奋学习，不可懈怠；也有人说，之所以叫叹息桥，是因为校方总是让犯了错误的学生来到这里，面对河水，兀立反省，作为一种惩罚。学生反省之后，往往叹息，悔不当初。

笔者成文前查阅了有关资料，可靠的说法是：威尼斯有一座叹息桥，通往一座监狱。当囚犯经过那座桥走向监狱时，都会触景生情，为自己的前途叹息。剑桥的这座桥，由于结构与那座桥相似，所以建成后，人们也把它叫作叹息桥。圣·约翰学院为游客印制的该院景点介绍中，也证实了这一点。2002年出版的一本剑桥大学的画册，在叹息桥图片下方的文字说明中，还专门强调：圣·约翰学院这座叹息桥没有给她的学生带来任何的折磨或处罚！
