As many metropolises have been beset by traffic woes, groups of people claim that higher levies should be imposed on car ownership, and the money could be used for upgrading public transportation. This essay discusses the possible benefits and drawbacks of this proposal.

A variety of benefits could be reached through heavy taxes on private car owners. To begin, it would undoubtedly help prevent some citizens from car purchases and begin to take public transportation instead, thus alleviating traffic congestions. In addition, another benefit would be that much more use would be made of public transport if it were improved by taxes from car buyers. Goverments could ensure sufficient routes to every corner of the city to make it more convenient for citizens to commute.Therefore, people living in the city would be more willing to take public transportation rather than drive a car. Nevertheless, there are drawbacks to such a solution.First and foremost, this would be a heavy burden on the car drivers.At present, taxes of vehicles in some countries have already been considerably high, which would mean less income at the end of the month for those who have no choice but to drive everyday. In addition, some believe that negative influences might be exerted on the development of the automobile industry because there would be a descending trend in the purchases of cars, leading to less sales in the car companies as well as the depression of relevant chains of car industry in terms of auto parts or the prices of petrol. In addition, this type of tax would be set to a fixed amount, which means that it will be a struggle for the poor, while for those who are wealthy, they could afford anyway. Therefore, this policy is not really fair.

In conclusion, the solution is worth considering, but advantages and drawbacks should also be taken into consideration.
