First two hours, now three hours—this is how far in advance authorities are recommending people show up to catch a domestic flight, at least at some major U.S. airports with increasingly massive security lines.

Americans are willing to tolerate time-consuming security procedures in return for increased safety. The crash of Egypt Air Flight 804,which terrorists may have downed

over the Mediterranean Sea, provides another tragic reminder of why. But demanding too much of air travelers or providing too little security in return undermines public support for the process. And it should: Wasted time is a drag on Americans’ economic and private lives, not to mention infuriating.

Last year, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) found in a secret check that undercover investigators were able to sneak weapons—both fake and real—past airport security nearly every time they tried.Enhanced security measures since then, combined with a rise in airline travel due to the improving economy and and low oil prices, have resulted in long waits at major airports such as Chicago’s O’Hare International. It is not yet clear how much more effective airline security has become—but the lines are obvious.

Part of the issue is that the government did not anticipate the steep increase in airline travel, so the TSA is now rushing to get new screeners on the line. Part of the issue is that airports have only so much room for screening lanes. Another factor may be that more people are trying to overpack their carry-on bags to avoid checked-baggage fees, though the airlines strongly dispute this.

There is one step the TSA could take that would not require remodeling airports or rushing to hire: Enroll more people in the PreCheck program.PreCheck is supposed to be a win-win for travelers and the TSA. Passengers who pass a background check are eligible to use expedited screening lanes. This allows the TSA to focus on travelers who are higher risks, saving time for everyone involved.TSA wants to enroll 25 million people

in PreCheck.

It has not gotten anywhere close to that, and one big reason is sticker shock: Passengers must pay $85 every five years to process their background checks. Since the beginning, this price tag has been PreCheck’s fatal flaw. Upcoming reforms migh t bring the price to a more reasonable level. But Congress should look into doing so directly, by helping to finance PreCheck enrollment or to cut costs in other ways.

The TSA cannot continue diverting resources into underused PreCheck lanes while most of the traveling public suffers in unnecessary lines. It is long past time to make the program work.

21.The crash of Egypt Air Flight 804 is mentioned to________.

[A] stress the urgency to strengthen security worldwide

[B] highlight the necessity of upgrading major US airports

[C] explain Americans’ tolerance of current security checks

[D] emphasis the importance of privacy protection

22. Which of the following contributions to long waits at major airport?

[A] New restrictions on carry-on bags

[B] The declining efficiency of the TSA

[C] An increase in the number of travelers

[D] Frequent unexpected secret checks

23.The word “expedited” (Line 4, Para.5) is closest in meaning to________.

[A] faster

[B] quieter

[C] wider

[D] cheaper

24. One problem with the PreCheck program is___________.

[A] A dramatic reduction of its scale

[B] Its wrongly-directed implementation

[C] The government’s reluctance to back it

[D] An unreasonable price for enrollment

25. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?

[A] Less Screening for More Safety

[B] PreCheck-a Belated Solution

[C] Getting Stuck in Security Lines

[D] Underused PreCheck Lanes

“The ancient Hawaiians were astronomers,” wrote Queen Liliuokalani, Hawaii’s last reigning monarch, in 1897. Star watchers were among the most esteemed members of Hawaiian society. Sadly, all is not well with astronomy in Hawaii today. Protests have erupted over construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope(TMT), a giant observatory that promises to revolutionize humanity’s view of the cosmos.

At issue is the TMT’s planned location on Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano worshiped by some Hawaiians as the piko, that connects the Hawaiian Islands to the heavens. But Mauna Kea is also home to some of the world’s most powerful telescopes. Rested in the Pacific Ocean, Mauna Kea’s peak rises above the bulk of our planet’s dense atmosphere, where conditions allow telescopes to obtain images of unsurpassed clarity.

Opposition to telescopes on Mauna Kea is nothing new. A small but vocal group of Hawaiians and environments have long viewed their presence as disrespect for sacred land and a painful reminder of the occupation of what was once a sovereign nation.

Some blame for the current controversy belongs to astronomers. In their eagerness to build bigger telescopes, they forgot that science is the only way of understanding the world. They did not always prioritize the protection of Mauna Kea’s fragile ecosystems or its holiness to the island’s inhabitants. Hawaiian culture is not a relic of the past; it is a living culture undergoing a renaissance today.

Yet science has a cultural history, too, with roots going back to the dawn of civilization. The same curiosity to find what lies beyond the horizon that first brought early Polynesians to Hawaii’s shores inspires astronomers today to explore the heavens.Calls to disassemble all telescopes on Mauna Kea or to ban future development there ignore the reality that astronomy and Hawaiian culture both seek to answer big questions about who we are, where we come from and where we are going. Perhaps that is why we explore the starry skies, as if answering a primal calling to know ourselves and our true ancestral homes.

The astronomy community is making compromises to change its use of Mauna Kea. The TMT site was chosen to minimize the telescope’s visibility around the island and to avoid archaeological and environmental impact. To limit the number of telescopes on Mauna Kea, old ones will be removed at the end of their lifetimes and their sites returned to a natural state. There is no reason why everyone cannot be welcomed on Mauna Kea to embrace their cultural heritage and to study the stars.

26. Queen Liliuokalani’s remark in Paragraph 1 indicates_________.

[A] its conservative view on the historical role of astronomy

[B] the importance of astronomy in ancient Hawaiian society

[C] the regrettable decline of astronomy in ancient times

[D] her appreciation of star watchers’ feats in her time

27. Mauna Kea is deemed as an ideal astronomical site due to__________.

[A] its geographical features

[B] its protective surroundings

[C] its religious implications

[D] its existing infrastructure

28. The construction of the TMT is opposed by some locals partly because________.

[A] it may risk ruining their intellectual life

[B] it reminds them of a humiliating history

[C] their culture will lose a chance of revival

[D] they fear losing control of Mauna Kea

29. It can be inferred from Paragraph 5 that progress in today’s astronomy __________.

[A] is fulfilling the dreams of ancient Hawaiians

[B] helps spread Hawaiian culture across the world

[C] may uncover the origin of Hawaiian culture

It is not obvious how the capacity to visualize s and to figure out numerical patterns suits one to answer questions that have eluded some of the best poets and philosophers. Anyone who has toiled through SAT will testify that test-taking skill also matters, whether it’s knowing when to guess or what question to skip. On another level ,many in the medical community acknowledge that the assisted-suicide debate has been fueled in part by the despair of patients for whom modern medicine has prolonged the physical agony of dying. The trend was naturally most obvious in those areas of science based especially on a mathematical or laboratory training , and can be illustrated in terms of the development of geology in the United Kingdom . The findings add weight to the theory that large areas of the Amazon have recovered so well from past periods of agricultural use that the regrowth has been mistaken by generations of biologists for“birgin”forest. An invisible border divides those arguing for computers in the classroom on the behalf of student’s career prospects and those arguing for computers in the classroom for broader reasons of radical education reform. Instead , we are treated to fine hypocritical spectacles , which now more than

All that glitters is not gold.(发光的未必都是金子)在这里是以全部否定的形式来表达部分否定的事实。 Don’t worry about preparations for this year’s July Fourth parade. Everything is in apple pie order。 Strike the iron as it is hot.(趁热打铁)但有一个成语的含义与我们的理解大相径庭,如 Claw me and I will claw thee.(互相吹捧)所以翻译时一定要小心。

Television is one of the means by which these feelings are created and conveyed and perhaps never before has it served so much to connect different peoples and nations as in the recent events in Europe. Television is one of the means by which these feelings are created and conveyed. 其主语是television,谓语是be动词is,宾语是one of the means,其后还有by which引导的定语从句修饰先行 词one of the means. and之后的一句话:perhaps never before has it served so much to connect different peoples and nations as in the recent events in Europe. It perhaps has never served so much... to connect different peoples and nations是不定式结构做目的状语。as in the recent events in Europe是as引导的比较状语从句,这里也省略了主句提到的内容,补充完整是as it has served to connect different peoples and nations in the recent events in Europe.

According to the new school of scientists, technology is an overlooked force in expanding the horizons of scientific knowledge. (71) Science moves forward, they say, not so much through the insights of great men of genius as because of more ordinary things like improved techniques and tools. (72) "In short" , a leader of the new school contends, "the scientific revolution, as we call it, was largely the improvement and invention and use of a series of instruments that expanded the reach of science in innumerable directions. " (73)Over the years, tools and technology themselves as a source of fundamental innovation have largely been ignored by historians and philosophers of science. The modern school that hails technology algues that such masters as Galileo, Newton, Maxwell, Einstein, and inventors such as Edison attached great importance to, and derived great benefit from, craft information and technological devices of different kinds that were usable in scientific experiments. The centerpiece of the argument of a technology-yes , genius-no advocate was an analysis of Galileo' s role at the start of the scientific revolution. The wisdom of the day was derived from Ptolemy, an astronomer of the second century, whose elaborate system of the sky put Earth at the center of all heavenly motions. (74)Galileo' s greatest glory was that in 1609 he was the first person to turn the newly invented telescope on the heavens to prove that the planets revolve around the sun rather than around the Earth. But the real hero of the story, according to the new school of scientists, was the long evolution in the improvement of machinery for making eyeglasses . Federal policy is necessarily involved in the technology vs. genius dispute.

A few years ago, in one of the most fascinating and disturbing experiments in behavioral psychology, Stanley Milgram of Yale University tested 40 subjects from all walks of life for their willingness to obey instructions given by a“leader”in a situation in which the subjects might feel a personal distaste for the actions they were called upon to perform. Stanley Milgram of Yale University tested 40 subjects from all walks of life. A few years ago, in one of the most fascinating and disturbing experiments in behavioral psychology为状语,修饰主干;for their willingness to obey instructions given by a“leader”in a situation也是状语,修饰主干;in which the subjects might feel a personal distaste for the actions为状语中的定语从句,修饰”situation”;(that)they were called upon to perform是定语从句中的定语从句,修饰”actions”。 A few years ago, in one of the most fascinating and disturbing experiments in behavioral psychology译为“几年前,在一次行为心理学中最吸引人但又最让人不安的实验中”。 Stanley Milgram of Yale University tested 40 subjects from all walks of life,译为“来自耶鲁大学的Stanley Milgram测试了来自各行各业的40个实验对象”。 按顺序往下译,第二个状语部分:for their willingness to obey instructions given by a“leader”in a situation,其中为了表达更顺畅,可以把“their willingness”名词转换为动词,译为“测试出在某一个情形中,他们愿意遵守由一个领导者发出的指令。” 最后译定语从句:in which the subjects might feel a personal distaste for the actions they were called upon to perform,译为“在这一情形中,实验对象可能会对被要求实施的行为产生个人的厌恶感”。

(1)Some of these causes are completely reasonable results of social needs. Others are reasonable consequences of particular advances in science being to some extent self-accelerating. (2)This trend began during the Second World War, when several governments came to the conclusion that the specific demands that a government wants to make of its scientific establishment cannot generally be foreseen in detail. (3)This seems mostly effectively done by supporting a certain amount of research not related to immediate goals but of possible consequence in the future. (4)However, the world is so made that elegant systems are in principle unable to deal with some of the world's more fascinating and delightful aspects. (7)Some philosophers argue that rights exist only within a social contract, as part of an exchange of duties and entitlements. (8)It leads the discussion to extremes at the outset: it invites you to think that animals should be treated either with the consideration humans extend to other humans, or with no consideration at all. (9)Arguing from the view that humans are different from animals in every relevant respect, extremists of this kind think that animals lie outside the area of moral choice. (10)When that happens, it is not a mistake: it is mankind's instinct for moral reasoning in action, an instinct that should be encouraged rather than laughed at. 1998年英译汉试题 (11)But even more important, it was the farthest that scientists had been able to look into the past, for what they were seeing were the patterns and structures that existed 15 billion years ago.

1. Even when we turn off the beside lamp and are fast asleep, electricity is working for us,driving our refrigerators, heating our water,or keeping our rooms air-conditioned. 2. But now it is realized that supplies of some of them are limited, and it is even possibleto give a reasonable estimate of their “expectation of life”,the time it will take to exhaust allknown sources and reserves of these materials. (84年考题) 分析:该句的骨干结构为“It is realized that…”,it为形式主语,that引导着主语从句以及并列的it is even possible to… 3. Prior to the twentieth century, women in novels were stereotypes of lacking anyfeatures that made them unique individuals and were also subject to numerous restrictionsimposed by the male-dominated culture. 4. This method of using“controls”can be applied to a variety of situations, and can beused to find the answer to questions as widely different as “Must moisture be present if iron is torust?”and “Which variety of beans gives the greatest yield in one se ason?”
