Directions: Read the following passages carefully and do the multiple-choice questions.

Questions 41 to 45are based on the following passage.

A boy between the ages of 6 and 14 still admires his mother and has plenty to learn from her.

But his interests are changing – he is becoming more interested in what men have to offer. A boy knows he is turning into a man. He has to learn from a man to complete his development.

The father's job is to step in over time. If there is no father around, then the child depends more on finding other men –at school, for example. Yet men are leaving teaching, especially in primary schools. This is a problem.

They insisted, too, that they needed lots of extra support. Throughout primary school years and into high school, boys should spend a lot of time with their fathers and mothers, getting their help, learning how to do things and enjoying their company.

With regard to feelings, at this stage the father is more important. The boy is ready to learn from his father and listens to what he has to say. Often he will take more notice of his father. It's enough to drive a mother wild!

Now is a good time for a father to do “little” things: playing in the yard on summer evenings, going for walks, telling stories about life, telling him about his own youth, working on hobbies or sports together for the enjoyment of doing it. This is the time when good memories are laid down that will be healthy to your son, and you, for years to come.

Although every boy is different, it's common for boys at this age to get a little argumentative(好争论的), restless and moody(闹情绪). It's not that they are turning bad – just that they are being born into a new self and birth always means struggle.

I believe this is the age when we fail teenagers the most. In our society all we offer those in the middle teens is "more of the same": more school. So it's little wonder that problems arise.

41. According to the passage a boy needs the help of ______ to develop well.

A.his mother only

B. his father only

C. neither his mother nor his father

D. both his mother and father

42. One problem for a boy's development is that ______.

A. there are fewer men teaching in primary schools

B. here are fewer women teaching in primary schools

C. the boy's interests are changing

D. the boy wants to act as a man

43. The good time for a father to have an influence on his son is _______.

A. when the boy is 14

B. when the boy is at primary school

C. from about age 6 to the 14th birthday

D. since the boy was born

44. By the middle teens boys argue often with their parents. This means ___.

A. they are turning bad

B. they are turning good

C. they are being born into a new self

D. they are rebelling against their parents

45. The main idea of this passage is that ____________.

A. fathers play an equal role in raising boys

B. mothers should feel comfortable when their sons' interests are changing

C. without fathers mothers can raise good men

D. fathers should stay with their sons as much as possible

Once upon a time there was a wise man that used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of writing on the beach before he began his work.

One day he was walking along the shore. As he looked down the beach, he

saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself at the thought of someone who would dance on the beach. So he began to walk faster to catch up.

As he got closer, he saw that it was a young man and the young man wasn't dancing, but instead he was reaching down to the shore, picking up something and very gently throwing it into the ocean.

As he got closer he called out, “Good morning! What are you doing?”

The young man paused, looking up and replied, “Throwing starfish (海星) in the ocean.”

“I guess I should have asked, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?”

“The sun is up and the tide is going out. And if I don't throw them in they'll die.”

“But, young man, don't you realize that there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it. You can't possibly make a difference!”

The young man listened politely. Then he bent down, picked another starfish and threw it into the ocean, past the breaking waves and s aid, “It made a difference for that one.”

There is something very special in each and every one of us. All of us have a natural ability to make a difference. If we can become aware of that ability, we will get through the strength of our images the power to shape the future.

Questions 56 to 60 are based on the following passage.

In the United States, about 750,000 persons have suffered AIDS. More than one half of them have died.

But doctors say evidence (证据) also shows there is no reason for persons to become terrified (惊吓) by the disease. The AIDS virus is spread during sex with an infected partner, or by infected blood. But doctors say their studies show the disease is not spread through normal, close social activities.

A study by one research team was printed in the New England Journal (杂志) of Medicine. The doctors studied one-hundred-one family members who lived with AIDS and lived in crowded conditions. The family members shared many personal goods with the patients. These included toothbrushes, drinking glasses, beds, towels and toilets.

Doctors said only one family member -- a –five-year-old girl – got the AIDS virus. They note, however, that the girl’s mother had the disease. They b elieve the girl probably was born with the virus. No other family member in the study got the AIDS virus or showed any signs of the disease.

The head of the study, Gerald Friedland, said if the disease is not easily spread in crowded homes, it also will not spread easily in factories, offices, schools and other public places. Doctor Friedland said the study also shows there is no reason to punish AIDS patients and to force them to live separately from other persons.

American health officials recently warned, however, that some health care workers should take special care. The report noted the AIDS virus is carried in blood and other body fluids. It said health care workers should put protective (保护性的) covers over their eyes and skin during medical operations, dental (牙科的) work, or other times when the patient may bleed.

In the United States, most AIDS patients are homosexual (同性恋的)men, people taking drugs who used infected needles (针头), and persons who received infected blood. More recent studies show the AIDS virus also can be spread during heterosexual (异性的) relations. It can spread either from the man to the woman, or from the woman to the man.

56. Doctors say there is no reason for people to be frightened about AIDS because

__________.

A. it is not deadly

B. few people are infected with AIDS

C. the AIDS virus is not spread in everyday social activities

D. the AIDS virus is not spread during sex

_______.

A. the AIDS is not spread by personal goods

B. women are more likely to get the AIDS virus than men

C. married men are less likely to get AIDS than unmarried ones

D. the AIDS virus is passed by drinking glasses

58. According to Doctor Friedland, there is no reason to _____.

新视野大学英语三级模拟试题及答案 Part I Reading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning) Directions: In this section, you will have 15 minutes to go over the passage quickly. For questions 1–7, markY (for YES) if the statement agrees with the information given in the passage; N (for NO) if the statement contradicts the information given in the passage; NG (for NOT GIVEN) if the information is not given in the passage. For questions 8–10, complete the sentences with the information given in the passage. Youth of Today —No savings, no pension, huge debts — Leaving school or university means financial independence — but does it also mean debt? Some experts say the young should take some care. It is life, but not as we know it. As this year’s school leavers and graduate s in Britain move on to further education or work, tasting financial independence for the first time, they show signs of being entirely different to previous generations in their attitudes to money, according to information collected by Cash. Used to debt but more affluent than previous generations, the current crop of 16- to 24-year-olds is a complex sector of society. But if they can handle their debts, these 7.5 million young adults have the potential to become quite sophisticated on money matters. Cash looked for the financial hallmarks of this group. They are going to be big spenders and will be targeted heavily by retailers. “The market for products and services aimed at this group has continued to thrive,” concludes research organization Mintel in its recent report for retailers “Selling to and Profi ting from the Under 25s”. This is “partly because the period during which people are young, free and single, unencumbered (不受妨碍的)by parents and /or children has expanded to the late twenties and early thirties,”it says. While 13 percent of the population regularly pays their utility(公共设施), credit card and other bills late, this proportion rises to a remarkable 64 percent for 18- to 24-year-olds, according to research conducted among 1,000 adults by https://www.sodocs.net/doc/4917692890.html,. In theory, this suggests that more than 4 million of them are heading for such poor credit ratings that they will find it difficult to borrow in the future. But lenders may become more flexible in their lending terms rather than lose out on this huge sector of the consumer market. Nearly one in three (28 percent) of people under 35 “do not consider their future financial position”, according to research from Accenture H R Services. Although half of 18- to 25-year-olds want to own their home some day, they see almost insurmountable hurdles, according to Mintel: “For those who had not yet bought their own property, the prospect of trying to do so seemed daunting — if not impossible —financially.” Or could it be that their future prosperity will depend on whether they inherit property from their parents? They regard as necessities many items which were seen as luxuries by their parents at the same age. More than nine out of 10 have their own mobile phone. “Some looked on their phone as a kind of security blanket, feeling lost without it,” says Mintel. A car is seen as “vital” by 64 percent
