Part IV Reading Comprehension

Passage One

We are all in a rush. We are hurrying here and there. The pressure of time characterizes life today. People like living at a breakneck speed. Fast-food restaurants, one minute bedtime stories, microwave ovens, quick freezers, instant noodles, automatic dial buttons on the telephone, the remote control of a television, emails, the Internet, all these have caused a speed-up in the pace of people’s life. These days it is possible to drive, eat, listen to the radio, watch a TV show or talk on the phone all at once, if you dare. Not long ago, for most people, listening to the radio was a single-task activity. Now it is rare for a person to listen to the radio and do nothing else. Even television has lost its command of our attention. In so many houses the TV just stays on, like a noisy light, while the life of the busy family passes back and forth in front of it.

In the technology-driven Western world, the increasing wealth and the increasing education bring a sense of tension about time. People believe that they have little time. They wish they had 48 hours a day. American culture views time as a thing to be kept and saved. Timesaving is a subject often talked about and discussed. Books with such titles as Streamlining Your Life; Take Your Time; More Hours in My Day are always best sellers. People have talked and wanted many ways to ―save time‖. But what does this concept mean? Does timesaving mean getting more done? If so, does talking on a mobile phone at the beach save time or waste it? If you can choose between a 30 minute train ride, during which you can read and a 20 minute drive, during which you cannot read, does this drive save ten minutes? Does it make sense to say driving saves ten minutes from your travel budget while removing ten minutes from your reading budget?

These questions have no answer. They depend on a concept that is ill formed; the very idea of timesaving. Some of us say we want to save time when really we just want to do more and faster. It might be simplest to recognize that there is time and we make choices about how to spend it, how to spare it, how to use it and how to fill it.

Time is not a thing we have lost. It is not a thing we ever had. It is what we live in.

Passage Two

In the United States, 30 percent of the grown-up population has a ―weight problem‖. To many people, the cause is clear: we eat too much. But scientific experiments do little to support this idea. Going back to the America of 1910, we find that people were thinner than today, yet they ate more food. In those days people worked harder physically, walked more, used machines much less, and didn’t watch television.

Several modern studies, besides, have shown that fatter people do not eat more on average than thinner people. In fact, some research work, such as the 1979 study of 3,545 London office workers, reports that fat people eat less than thinner people on average. Studies show that thin people are more active than fat people. A study by the research group at Standford University School of Medicine found the following fact: the more the man ran, the greater body fat he lost. The more he ran, the greater was his need for food. Thus, those who ran the most ate the most, yet lost the greatest amount of body fat.

Passage Three

Some people think they have an answer to the troubles of automobile crowding and dirty air in large cities. Their answer is the bicycle, or bike.

In a great many cities, hundreds of people ride bicycles to work every day. In New York City, some bike riders have even formed a group called Bike for a Better City. They claim that if more people rode bicycles to work there would be fewer automobiles in the downtown section of the city and therefore less dirty air from car engines.

For several years this group has been trying to get the city government to help bike riders. For example, they want the city to draw bicycle lanes on some of the main streets, because when bike riders have to use the same lanes as cars, there are accidents. Bike for a Better City feels that if there were special lanes more people would use bikes.

But no bicycle lanes have been drawn. Not everyone thinks it is a good idea –they say it will slow traffic. Some store owners on the main streets say that if there is less traffic, they will have less business. And most people live too far from downtown to travel by bike.

The city government has not yet decided what to do. It wants to keep everyone happy. Only on weekends, Central Park is closed to cars, and the roads may be used by bicycles only. But Bike for a Better City says that this is not enough and keeps fighting to get bicycle lanes downtown.

Passage Four

Work is a very important part of life in the United States. Americans spend most of their lives working. For most Americans, their work defines them: they are what they do. What happens, then, when a person can no longer work?

Most Americans stop working at age sixty-five or seventy and retire. Because work is such an important part of life in this culture, retirement can be very difficult. Retirees often feel that they are useless and unproductive. Of course, some people are happy to retire, but leaving one’s job, whatever it is, is a difficult change, even for those who look forward to retiring. Retirement can also bring financial problems. Many people depend on Social Security checks every month. During their working years, employees contribute a certain percentage of their salaries to the government. Each employer also gives a certain percentage to the government. When people retire, they receive this money as income, Their checks do not provide enough money to live on, however, because prices are increasing very rapidly. Senior citizens, those over sixty-five, have to have savings in the bank or other retirement plans to make ends meet. The rate of inflation is forcing prices higher each year; Social Security checks alone cannot cover these growing expense. The government offers some assistance, but many senior citizens have to change the life-styles after retirement. They have to spend carefully to be sure that they can afford to buy food, fuel, and other necessities.

Of course, Many senior citizens are happy with their retirement. They have time to spend with their families or to enjoy their hobbies. Some continue to work part time; others do volunteer work. Harmfulness of Fake Commodities

While decades ago fake commodities were practically unheard of in economic life, China is suffering from a boom in inferior and fake goods. According to a recent survey, more than 90 percent of those who were questioned admitted to having been tricked into purchasing fake products. Now it seems almost impossible to find one who would say he has never been influenced by bad products.

This phenomenon is due to several factors. First, some manufacturers are money-oriented. To their mind, producing fake products is a short-cut toward getting rich. Second, some consumers are under the illusion that inferior goods can be used equally but they are much cheaper. A third contributing cause is the law, much of which cannot punish severely those who manufacture fake products. All this contributes to the wide spread of fake products.

Now it is time something was done to get rid of fake products before they dominate our market. On the one hand, law must be made and enforced to punish those who produce and sell fake goods and reward those who fight against them. On the other hand, education must be implemented and strengthened to enhance people’s awareness of the harmfulness of fake products. Only when every citizen in our country takes effective action to combat fake products shall we expect to see a healthy development of economy and a drastic increase in people’s living standard.

作文:

Positive and Negative Aspects of Motorcycles Motorcycles enjoy some advantages which other transport means do not have. Above all, they are faster than ordinary bicycles, thus saving time and energy. Moreover, they are smaller than cars in size so that they are less likely to be caught in traffic jams which are a big headache to every urban resident. Last but not the least, they are much cheaper in price and maintenance than cars, though more expensive than bicycles. In conclusion, the motor bicycle offers a good choice between bicycles and cars.

However, the disadvantages of motor bicycles cannot be ignored. The biggest problem is the serious pollution. Studies have proved that a motor bicycle sends off

more waste gas to the air than a car does. Besides, the noise they produce is intolerable. And it should be pointed out that they have more chance of causing traffic accidents, thus reducing their safety. Needless to say, they are less comfortable to ride, especially in bad weather.

It can be safely predicted that more people will buy motor bicycles as their living standard rises. But this trend will not persist very long, especially in some big cities, for the municipal governments have limited their number in urban areas, and some cities claim to ban motor bicycles from entering the center of the city. And as people’s demand for quality life rises, a boom of car consumption will arrive. In a word, motor bicycles will be mainly in rural areas.

He was acknowledging one of our most distinctive characteristics:the fact that we are social animals whose behavior and personalities are shaped by the groups to which we belong. Throughout life, most of our daily activities are performed in the company of others. Whether our purpose is working, playing, raising a family, learning,or simply relaxing,we usually pursue it in groups, even if the group is as small as two or three people. Out need for human contacts is not merely a practical one;it is a deep psychological need as well. If people are deprived of the company of others for prolonged periods, mental breakdown is the usual result. Even the Geneva Convention(日内瓦公约),an international agreement that regulates the treatment of prisoners of war, recognizes this need. It regards solitary (孤独的)imprisonment for more than thirty day as a cruel form of torture(折磨)。 In its strictest sense, a group is a collection of people interacting together in an orderly way on the basis of shared expe ctations about one another‘s behavior. As result of this interaction, members feel a common sense of“belonging.”They distinguish members from nonmembers and expect certain kinds of behavior from outsiders. 21.By“No man is an island,”John Donne means _____. A.no one can live on an island alone B.a man is not surrounded by sea on all sides C.a man and an island are irrelevan D.no one can live in isolation from other people 22.The fact that we work or even play in groups illustrates the point that ____. A.poeple are different from animals B.Donne recognized the group to which he belonged C.human beings are social animals D.human behavior and personalities are formed by others 23.“Breakdown”as used in Line 6,Paragraph 2 most probably denotes ____. A.separation B.collapse C.analysis D.function 24.According to the passage, what is NOT a characteristic of group? A.There are at least two people in it. B.The members share some common grounds. C.The members work for one purpose. D.The members interact regularly with each other. 25.This passage is mainly about _______. A.the importance of human contacts B.pattens of human behavior C.the importance of human activities D.patterns of human society Passage Two Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage.
