Unit 5. Part one. The inhabitants of a small island.

2. Exercises. 1. Listen to the passage about the life on a small island and then answer the following questions.

The inhabitants of a small island in the South Pacific discovered a plant which contained a powerful drug. This drug made it more difficult for them to think rationally. It stops them worrying about the future, and enables them to forget all their problems. At the same time it made it much easier for them to relax and enjoy themselves. So much so indeed that the whole population of the islands stopped working and spent all their time singing dancing and looking at the sea. Unfortunately this had a very bad effect on the country’s economy, and people began to run short of food. This however didn’t discourage the people from taking the drug. The prime minister made speeches on the TV, warning them about the drug. But nobody took any notice. And before long the economy was in ruins. This forced the government to make the drug illegal. But that only made the situation worse. The law couldn’t prevent the people from taking the drug which grew wild all over the island. On the contrary the fact that the drug was illegal merely encouraged people to take it. Eventually the government found a better solution. They exported the drug to other countries. This saved the islanders from having to work more than one day a week, and allowed them to spend the rest of their time sitting in the sun without a care of the world.

Part 3. 1. A tiny village in France. Listen to the following passage about a small village and then choose the correct answer to each question you hear.

Once every year for the last few years we have visited our friends in a small tiny little village in the middle of France. And they bought a cowshed, and it was literally a cowshed not fit to live in. And they have gradually ma de it better and renovated it. And it’s in a beautiful position. It’s on the top of a hill. And for miles around you can see this beautiful countryside. And I think only one another house. So you do need a car and you take the car into the tiny little village where there are about 4 or 5 shops and a very nice restaurant where you can go and have a 5 course meal for very little money. And also near is a very big lake, because this place is in the DorDon, and there are lots of lakes there. And we go there most afternoons and wind surf and sail. Also there is a very nice market, French Market, there once a week, where you get lovely parties, lovely fresh fish, really good fresh fish and lovely bowls and baskets which the local people have made. I like this part of France very much. But I think it’s a shame that there are too many English people there.

Questions:

1) How often does the speaker visit his friends in France?

2) In which part of France do his friends live?

3) What was their house before they modernized it?

4) Where is the house located?

5) According to the passage which of the following statements is not true?

2. I came from a small town. Listen to the following passage about a town in the US, and then choose the correct answer to each question you hear.

I come from a place, I come from the northern United States, Rochester Minnesota. It’s a town of about 50,000 people. And it’s a very clean town. It’s an ordinary town, fairly wealthy, but it’s a bit strange because there are a lot of transience,a lot of people who don’t live there. It’s the home of mild clinic. So there are thousands and thousands of people who come every year. The other thing is there are also a lot of foreign residents, a lot of doctors and nurses

are from other countries, and so it makes what could be a really dull mid-west town something special. The library is very good. Cultural events are much more interesting than the rest of Minnesota, and actually it’s not a bad place to grow up. On the other hand I was dying to leave there. And all I could think of was getting away from the mid-west in the cold winters. You have about 6 months when it’s almost too cold to go outside. A lot of the buildings are designed so that you can walk from one to the other underground. There is a big pedestrian subway system so you can avoid all these snow.

Questions:

1) According to the passage what is unusual about the town as described by the speaker?

2) About how many people are there in the town?

3) Who are the foreign residents in the town?

4) In which parts of the United States is the town situated?

5) How does the speaker feel about being a child there?

6) How did the people in the town avoid the snow?

3. What kind of city is it? Listen to the following passage about Tokyo. And then choose the correct answer to each question you hear.

What kind of city is it? It’s a very modern city. I expected that Tokyo would be quite old. But there are very few parts of it which are old in fact at all. Because it was fire bombed during the second world war by the Americans. There are one or two temples that survived, but basically it’s a city that’s being built since 1945. A lot of it is low rise, one, two, three storeys houses because of the earthquake danger, because it gets lots of earthquakes. Once you have mastered a little bit of Japanese it’s relatively easy to get around Tokyo, because they get excellent subway system and it’s quick and easy to get around. The problem is of course Tokyo is the city of 13,14,15 million people and they all want to get around at exactly the same time. So especially if you are travelling in the rush hours, 8 o’clock in the morning, 5 o’clock at night, it is a question in many of the big stations being pushed onto the train. They paid students a bit of pocket money to do this. Right in the center of Tokyo is the Imperial Palace. And that’s set in delightful gardens, but it is completely closed to the public, so nobody have seen it. In the rest of Tokyo there are 10, 12 public gardens but they tend to get very filled up of people especially during national holidays. Other than that it’s just street after street, and block after block very similar houses as I say one or two storied houses which just go on and on for mile after mile, because Tokyo extends hundreds of square miles, a massive city.

Questions:

1) What’s special with most of the buildings in Tokyo?

2) Why is it relatively easy to get around Tokyo according to the speaker?

3) How do you get on the trains in the busy periods of the day?

4) Why is it a problem to go to the public gardens?

5) In which part of Tokyo is the Imperial Palace located?

3) I can’t decide now. I’ll have to phone my head office and inquire before I can give you a definite answer.

4) The meeting was cancelled because the chairman of the board came down with the flu. He will stay away from his office for the next 2 or 3 days.

5) Over 1 billion people world wide are over-weight. And that number will increase to 1.5 billion by 2015 unless current trends are reversed.

2. Passage translation. Listen and translate each passage you have heard into Chinese. Then write it in the space given below. You may take notes while you are listening.

1) Now in this industrial world people are inclined to choose material possessions. This is true of doctors too. The high income of doctor is the envy of the other people. Many high school graduates are eager to get into medical colleges, and countless girls consider doctors to be their best choice of husbands. For many years the public has charged that doctors in public hospitals demand money from patients. The amount of money the patients give determines the kind of treatment they receive.

2) Products of our company received considerable attention of the exhibition visitors. We held many efficient business meetings and our stand was visited by over 6000 people.

(4) Questions 16-20 We are moving inexorably into the age of automation. Our aim is not to devise a mechanism which can perform a thousand different actions of any individual man but, on the contrary, one which could by a single action replace a thousand men. Industrial automation has moved along three lines. First there is the conveyor belt system of continuous production whereby separate operations are linked into a single sequence. The goods produced by this well-established method are untouched by the worker, and the machine replaces both unskilled and semiskilled. Secondly, there is automation with feedback control of the quality of the product: here mechanisms are built into the system which can compare the output with a norm, that is, the actual product with what it is supposed to be, and then correct any shortcomings. The entire cycle of operations dispenses with human control except in so far as monitors are concerned. One or two examples of this type of automation will illustrate its immense possibilities. There is a factory in the U.S.A. which makes 1,000 million electric light bulbs a year, and the factory employs three hundred people. If the preautomation techniques were to be employed, the labour force required would leap to 25,000. A motor manufacturing company with 45,000 spare parts regulates their entire supply entirely by computer. Computers can be entrusted with most of the supervision of industrial installations, such as chemical plants or oil refineries. Thirdly, there is computer automation, for banks, accounting departments, insurance companies and the like. Here the essential features are the recording, storing, sorting and retrieval of information. The principal merit of modern computing machines is the achievement of their

Newsweek Why We Must Fire Bad Teachers The relative decline of American education at the elementary- and high-school levels has long been a national embarrassment as well as a threat to the nation’s future. Once upon a time, American students tested better than any other students in the world. Now, ranked against European schoolchildren, America does about as well as Lithuania, behind at least 10 other nations. For much of this time—roughly the last half century—professional educators believed that if they could only find the right pedagogy, the right method of instruction, all would be well. They tried New Math, open classrooms, Whole Language—but nothing seemed to achieve significant or lasting improvements. Yet in recent years researchers have discovered something that may seem obvious, but for many reasons was overlooked or denied. What really makes a difference, what matters more than the class size or the textbook, the teaching method or the technology, or even the curriculum, is the quality of the teacher. Much of the ability to teach is innate—an ability to inspire young minds as well as control unruly classrooms that some people instinctively possess (and some people definitely do not). Teaching can be taught, to some degree, but not the way many graduate schools of education do it, with a lot of insipid or marginally relevant theorizing and pedagogy. In any case the research shows that within about five years, you can generally tell who is a good teacher and who is not.

China’s rise has fully awakened their awareness of the fact that their kids can benefit from their bilingual ability which can not only enhance their competitiveness in the job market, but also facilitate their exposure to and familiarity with the two different cultures between the East and the West. They have hardly changed their attitudes towards Chinese. At one time they proudly declared that they knew English only.

When I was young, there was an amazing publication called The Whole Earth Catalog, which was one of the bibles of my generation. It was created by a fellow named Stewart Brand not far from here in Menlo Park, and he brought it to life with his poetic touch. This was in the late 1960′s, before personal computers and desktop publishing, so it was all made with typewriters, scissors, and Polaroid cameras. It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google came along: it was idealistic, and overflowing with neat tools and great notions. Stewart and his team put out several issues of The Whole Earth Catalog, and then when it had run its course, they put out a final issue. It was the mid-1970s, and I was your age. On the back cover of their final issue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous. Beneath it we re the words: “Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.” It was their farewell message as they signed off. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. And I have always wished that for myself. And now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you. Smoking does great harm to human and its gravity should not be underestimated. Smoking pollutes air, damages health, and increases the incidence of lung cancer. To arouse the awareness about the prevalence of tobacco in all the countries and to prevent smoking-induced diseases and deaths, the WHO (World Health Organization) has defined May 31st in every year as World No-Tobacco Day. The tobacco addicts say that smoking is impossible to quit because they could do without meals in a day but would feel tortured without tobacco in two hours. However, when one realizes that smoking is harmful in many ways but beneficial in no way and that it is a curse to others as well

They keep on showing how Shanghai has been developing fast and enormously since its opening as a commercial port in the late 19th century, especially after the founding of new China. If you’ve ever been on a jury, you might have noticed that a funny thing happens the minute you get behind closed doors. Everybody starts talking about themselves. They say what they would have done if they had been the plaintiff or the defendant. Being on a jury reminds me why I can’t tolerate talk radio. We Americans seem to have lost the ability to talk about anything but our own experiences. We can’t seem to generalize without stereotyping or to consider evidence that goes against our own experience. I heard a doctor on a radio show talking about a study that found that exercise reduces the incidence of Alzheimer’s. And caller after caller couldn’t wait to make essentially the opposite point: “Well, my grandmother never exercised and she lived to 95.”We are in an age summed up by the saying: “I experience, therefore I’m right.”Historically, the hallmarks of an uneducated person were the lack of ability to think critically, to use deductive reasoning to distinguish the personal from the universal. Now that seems an apt description of many Americans.
