IV. Chinese Translation of Paragraphs

The Balkans

Where the great plates of the Earth’s crust met, the great stresses and strains cause terrible earthquakes. Something similar is happening when the Earth’s major peoples, languages, religions and cultures meet. One such area is the eastern end of the Mediterranean. The southeastern corner of the Europe is mountainous, and rarely at peace. The Balkans were at the edge of the Roman Empire, and when in the 4th and 6th centuries A.D., huge migrations of people from Central Asia lead to the collapse of that empire, many of them settled in that area. The Roman Empire split to two before its final disappearance. The western half was based ∧Rome and followed the Roman Catholic version of Christianity. The eastern half, with its capital in Constantinople, believed in the Orthodox Church. Some of the tribes became Catholic; others became Orthodox, and thus the complex jigsaw became even more complex. Then the Muslim Turks marched into the area, sweeping side the remains of the Roman Empire. During their rule in the Balkans, many of the inhabitants converted to Islam, and yet another division came into being. When the Turkish empire ∧turn disappeared, the Balkans exploded, and the result was the First World War.

Why We Travel?

We travel, initially, to lose ourselves; and we travel, (1) next, to find ourselves. We travel to (2) open our hearts and eyes and learn more about the world than our newspapers will accommodate. We travel to bring what little we can, in our ignorance and knowledge, to those parts of the globe whose riches are differently dispersed. And we travel, in (3) essence, to become young fools again — to (4) slow time down and get taken (5) in, and fall in love once more. The beauty of this whole process was best described, perhaps, before people even took (6) to frequent flying, by George Santayana in his lapidary essay, “The Philosophy of Travel.” We “need sometimes,” the Harvard philosopher wrote, “to (7) escape into open solitudes, into aimlessness, (8) into the moral holiday of running some pure hazard, in order to (9) sharpen the edge of life, to taste hardship, and to be compelled to work desperately for a moment at no matter what.”

I like that stress on (10) work, since never more than on the road are we shown how proportional our blessings are to the (11) difficulty that precedes them; and I like the (12) stress on a holiday that’s “moral” since we fall into our ethical habits as (13) easily as into our beds at night. Few of us ever forget the connection between “travel” and “travail,” and I know that I travel in large part in search of (14) hardship — both my own, which I want to feel, and others’, which I need to see. Travel in that sense guides us toward a better (15) balance of wisdom and compassion — of seeing the world clearly, and yet feeling it truly. For (16) seeing without feeling can obviously be uncaring; while (17) feeling without seeing can be blind.

Yet for me the first great joy of traveling is simply the luxury of leaving all my beliefs and certainties at (18) home, and seeing everything I thought I knew in a (19) different light, and from a crooked (20) angle. In that regard, even a Kentucky Fried Chicken outlet in Beijing can be both novelty and revelation: In China, after all, people will pay a whole week’s wages to eat with Colonel Sanders.

When you look a head, you think you have more time than you need. For Example,at the beginning of a semester, you may feel that you have plenty of time on your hands, but toward the end of the term you may suddenly find that time is running out. You don't have enough time to cover all your duties (duty), so you get worried. What is the answer? Control! 译:时间真是不好对付,既难以控制好,又很容易浪费掉,当你向前看时,你觉得你的时间用不完。例如,在一个学期的开始,你或许觉得你有许多时间,但到学期快要结束时,你会突然发现时间快用光了,你甚至找不出时间把所有你必须干的事情干完,这样你就紧张了。答案是什么呢?控制。 2 Time is dangerous. If you don't control it, it will control you. I f you don't make it work fo r you, it will work against you. So you must become the master of time, not its servant. As a first-year college student, time management will be your number one Problem. 译:时间是危险的,如果你控制不了时间,时间就会控制你,如果你不能让时间为你服务,它就会起反作用。所以,你必须成为时间的主人,而不是它的奴仆,作为刚入学的大学生,妥善安排时间是你的头等大事。 3 Time is valuable.

Words are the tools of a speaker?s craft. They have special uses, just like the tools of any other profession. As a speaker, you should be aware of the meaning of words and know how to use language accurately, clearly, vividly, and appropriately. 好的演讲者对语言很重视,也知道如何让它发挥更好的效果。词语是演讲者演讲的重要“武器”,具有特殊的用途,这和任何其他的工作技艺没什么两样。作为演讲者,必须知道词语的具体含义,也要懂得如何做到用词准确、清晰、生动、适当。 Using language accurately is as vital to a speaker as using numbers accurately to a accountant. Never use a word unless you are sure of its meaning. If you are not sure, look up the word in the dictionary. As you prepare your speeches, ask yourself constantly, “What do I really want to say? What do I really mean?” Choose words that are precise and accurate. 演讲者准确地使用语言和会计准确使用数字是一样重要的。确定词意后再措词。如果不确定,请先查词典。当你在准备演讲的时候,要不断地问自己:“我到底要说什么?我到底想表达什么意思?”用词一定要精准。 Using language clearly allows listeners to grasp your meaning immediately. One way (to make your speech vivid)|is through imagery,or the creation of word pictures. You can develop imagery by using concrete language, simile, and metaphor. Simile is an explicit comparison between things (that are essentially different yet have something in common); it always contains the words “like”or “as”. Four devices for creating rhythm are parallelism, repetition, alliteration, and antithesis. Parallelism is the similar arrangement of a pair or series of related words, phrases, or sentences. Repetition is the use of the same word or set of words at the beginning or end of successive clauses or sentences. Alliteration comes from repeating the initial constant sounds of close or adjoining words. Antithesis is the juxtaposition of

(A Brief Discussion of Translation and Major Translation Approaches) 1. Introduction Translation studies started along with translation practice. Translation theories developed flourishingly in the 20th century, especially in the second half of the last century. In fact, translation, which is a very complex phenomenon, is related to different disciplines, such as linguistics, psychology, sociology, cultural anthropology, communication theory, literary criticism, aesthetics, and semiotics. As translation study is a cross-discipline and cross-culture subject involving many aspects of human knowledge, the lack of a fully acceptable theory of translation should not come as a surprise. Meanwhile, quite a number of translation approaches and strategies have become universally acceptable and widely applicable. They are, of course, the fruits of many translation theorists and translation practitioners at home and abroad. 2.The Origin of Translation Language makes it possible for people to communicate with one another freely so as to complete important tasks in human life. Translation makes it possible for people from different languages to communicate with one another so as to complete important tasks in their life. Theodore Savory points out, “Translation is almost as old as original authorship and has a history as honorable and as complex as that of any other branch of literature”(申雨平, 2002:4). In Zhou Dynasty there were different forms of address for translators in different places. “Translators are called Ji in the east, Xiang in the south, Didi in the west, and

Unit 1 Changes in the Way We Live 在美国,不少人对乡村生活怀有浪漫的情感。许多居住在城镇的人梦想着自己办个农场,梦想着靠土地为生。很少有人真去把梦想变为现实。或许这也没有什么不好,因为,正如吉姆·多尔蒂当初开始其写作和农场经营双重生涯时所体验到的那样,农耕生活远非轻松自在。但他写道,自己并不后悔,对自己作出的改变生活方式的决定仍热情不减。 Mr. Doherty Builds His Dream Life Jim Doherty
