二、 Reading Comprehension(总题数:5,分数:50.00)

It is common today to identify, in some way, with one side of the brain. You may think, for example, that you are more

ight brain than left. When we make such statements, we are referring to

the fact that the two halves of the human brain deal with information from the senses, and hence

the world, in different ways. In general, the left hemisphere is responsible for our processing

of language and logic and the right deals with aspects of thought like emotions and spatial relationships. The hemispheres also control our movements, though the left hemisphere controls

the right side of our bodies, and vice versa. The fact that the two hemispheres of the brain work

in different ways on different tasks is a relatively new discovery. That discovery was made by

a psychobiologist named Roger Sperry and it won him a Nobel Prize in 1981. Sperry uncovered the

inner workings of normal brains by studying the brain function of people who had a certain kind

of brain damage. In most brains, the two halves are connected by the corpus callosum, a bundle

of millions of nerves, which serves as a ridge of sorts between the two hemispheres, allowing

them to communicate with each other. The people Sperry studied had had their corpus callosa cut,

and because of this, their left and right brains couldn exchange information. In a famous experiment, Sperry showed one such subject two pictures. The subject saw a picture of a knife

with his right eye(controlled by the left brain)and a picture of a spoon with his left

because

knife, said subject the saw, he what name to asked When brain). right the by eye(controlled

it is the left brain that deals with language and the naming of things. However, when asked to

reach over with his left hand to a nearby table on which was placed both a knife and a spoon,

and choose, without looking, the object he saw, the subject chose the spoon. This is because his

left eye(controlled by the right brain)saw the spoon and his left hand(also controlled by the

right brain)chose this rather than the knife. The subject himself was not at all conscious of

the fact that he was seeing and choosing two different objects.(分数:10.00)

(1).The right hemisphere of the human brain is responsible for______.(分数:2.00)

A.the right side of the body

https://www.sodocs.net/doc/7011494488.html,nguage

C.emotions √

D.touch

由第一段倒数第二句后半部分and the right deals with aspects of thought like emotions and spatial relationships,可知右脑负责感情和空间关系之类的想法,因此C是正确答案。

(2).Roger Sperry studied______.(分数:2.00)

A.the corpus callosum

B.people with abnormal brains √

C.people with normal brains

D.the connection between vision and touch

Sperry uncovered the inner workings of normal brains by studying thebrain function of people who had a certain kind of brain damage.

Within the span of a hundred years, in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, a tide of emigration—one of the great folk wanderings of history—swept from Europe to America. 46) This movement, driven by powerful and diverse motivations, built a nation out of a wilderness and, by its nature, shaped the character and destiny of an uncharted continent. 47) The United States is the product of two principal forces—the immigration of European peoples with their varied ideas, customs, and national characteristics and the impact of a new country which modified these traits. Of necessity, colonial America was a projection of Europe. Across the Atlantic came successive groups of Englishmen, Frenchmen, Germans, Scots, Irishmen, Dutchmen, Swedes, and many others who attempted to transplant their habits and traditions to the new world. 48) But, the force of geographic conditions peculiar to America, the interplay of the varied national groups upon one another, and the sheer difficulty of maintaining old-world ways in a raw, new continent caused significant changes. These changes were gradual and at first scarcely visible. But the result was a new social pattern which, although it resembled European society in many ways, had a character that was distinctly American. 49) The first shiploads of immigrants bound for the territory which is now the United States crossed the Atlantic more than a hundred years after the 15th- and 16th-century explorations of North America. In the meantime, thriving Spanish colonies had been established in Mexico, the West Indies, and South America. These travelers to North America came in small, unmercifully overcrowded craft. During their six- to twelve-week voyage, they subsisted on barely enough food allotted to them. Many of the ship were lost in storms, many passengers died of disease, and infants rarely survived the journey. Sometimes storms blew the vessels far off their course, and often calm brought unbearably long delay. “To the anxious travelers the sight of the American shore brou ght almost inexpressible relief.” said one recorder of events, “The air at twelve leagues’ distance smelt as sweet as a new-blown garden.” The colonists’ first glimpse of the new land was a sight of dense woods. 50) The virgin forest with its richness and variety of trees was a veritable real treasure-house which extended from Maine all the way down to Georgia. Here was abundant fuel and lumber. Here was the raw material of houses and furniture, ships and potash, dyes and naval stores.

Learing is one's own business, which cannot rely upon others. It will certainly be of great help, if there are good environments, sufficient books and equipment, as well as instructions and enlightments from scholarly mentors and beneficial friends. But even if you have got all these favorabl e conditions, you cannot be sure to succeed in l earning, for not a few peopl e who have been successful in l earning are not armed with all these things. The most important factor consists in one's own effort. To l earn is rather a painstaking and persevering business. Many a man is a failure because he cannot bear such indispensabl e hardships. What I wish for all stud ents is some release from the grim grip of the future. I wish them a chance to enjoy each segment of their education as an experience in itself and not as a tiresome requirement in preparation for the next step. I wish them the right to experiment, to trip and fall, to l earn that d efeat is as educational as victory and is not the end of the world. My wish, of course, is naive. One of the few rights that America d oes not proclaim is the right to fail. Achievement is the national god, worshipped in our media —the million-d ollar athlete, the wealthy executive — and gl orified in our praise of possessions. In the presence of such a potent state religion, the young are growing up old.
