I was invited to attend a presentation at the Kentucky School. That evening I found gratitude had amazing 1 to change our attitude and our life.

The young musician Mr. Patrick was 2 onto the stage in his wheelchair and began to play the piano. His fingers danced across the 3 as he made beautiful music. He then began to sing as he played, and it was wonderful. But what shocked me most was his magic smile.

Patrick was born with no eyes and an illness in the legs, which left him 4 for life. However, as a child, he was fitted with artificial 5 and placed in a wheelchair. Before his first 6 , he discovered the piano. When his mom hit any note on the piano, and within one or two 7 , he′d get it. By his second birthday, he was playing “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star”. His father was 8 .“We might not play baseball, but we c an play music together.”

When Patrick was at the University of Louisville, his father attended classes with him. He was also a part of the 214-member marching band!He was a blind, wheelchair-bound trumpet player; and he and his father did it together. His father worked the night shift in order to accompany his 9 band practice. Patrick says, “My dad′s my 10 .”

But even more than his 11 musical talent, it was Patrick′s “ attitude of gratitude ”that touched my soul. On stage, between s ongs, he talked to the audience about his life and about how 12 he was with a great father. When his performance was over, Patrick and his father were on the stage together. The crowd rose to their feet and 13 for over five minutes.

We all face misfortune in our lives. 14 ,it′s not the hardship but how we react to it that will determine the joy and happiness in our lives. During tough times, do we spend too much time feeling 15 for ourselves, or can we, with gratitude, learn how to dance in the rain?

When people ask me how smart my dog is, I say that she has about the intelligence of a toddler(学步的幼儿). Chaser is a 9-year-old border collie(牧羊犬) that knows 1,000 words. Language learning is an interesting test of animal intelligence because it requires unconsciously grasping a series of concepts in much the same way that

children do as they advance from wordless babbling to complete sentences. For me, the most important common characteristic of dogs and toddlers is that they both learn best through playing games. I made games and other playful interactions with Chaser, speaking to her throughout the day in simple words and phrases just as I would to a toddler. Our language games circled around looking for and finding, chasing, fetching and herding her toys — behaviors that released her instinctive drives as a border collie. Instinct-based games gave the toys value in Chaser’s mind, and that in turn gave value to the words — proper nouns and common nouns, verbs and even prepositions, adverbs and adjectives — I spoke to her in connection with the toys.

Chaser’s first breakthrough came when she was 5 months old when she realized that objects like her toys could have unique names. Like a young child, she also grasped the referential cues (指示性暗示) — my holding up a toy and pointing to it while saying its name —that enabled her to map a particular word to a particular object. That learning opened the door to a series of concepts. Chaser learned that nouns and verbs have independent meanings and can be combined in many different ways. She also learned that a single thing can have more than one name and that a single common noun, like stick or car, can identify several different things. She can identify a new object she has never seen from among a group of familiar objects. She achieved all of this learning, including knowing the proper-noun names of over 1,000 animals, balls and Frisbees in her first three years. Most recently, Chaser has learned to successfully interpret sentences with three elements of grammar.

26. When did the dog Chaser realize that objects could have unique names?

A. Three years ago.

B. Five years ago.

C. Seven years ago.

D. Eight years ago.

Researchers at the University of Kansas say that people can accurately judge 90 percent of a stranger’s personality simply by looking at the person’s shoes.

“Shoes convey a thin but useful slice of information about their wearers,” the

authors wrote in the new study published in the Journal of Research in Personality. “Shoes serve a practical purpose, and also serve as nonve rbal cues with symbolic messages. People tend to pay attention to the shoes they and others wear.”

Medical Daily notes that the number of detailed personality traits detected in the study include a person’s general age, their gender, income, political affi liation, and other personality traits, including someone’s emotional stability.

Lead researcher Omri Gillath said the judgments were based on the style, cost, color and condition of someone’s shoes. In the study, 63 University of Kansas students looked at pictures showing 208 different pairs of shoes worn by the study’s participants. Volunteers in the study were photographed in their most commonly worn shoes, and then filled out a personality questionnaire.

So, what do your shoes say about your personality?

Some of the results were expected: People with higher incomes most commonly wore expensive shoes, and flashier footwear was typically worn by extroverts.

However, some of the more specific results are intriguing. For example, “practical and functional” shoes were generally worn by more “agreeable” people, while ankle boots were more closely aligned with “aggressive” personalities.

The strangest of all may be that those who wore “uncomfortable looking” shoes tend to have “calm” personalities.

And if you have several pairs of new shoes or take exceptional care of them, you may suffer from “attachment anxiety”, spending an inordinate amount of time worrying about what other people think of your appearance.

There was even a political calculation in the mix with more liberal types wearing “shabbier and less expensive” shoes.

The researchers noted that some people will choose shoe styles to mask their actual personality traits, but researchers noted that volunteers were also likely to be unaware that their footwear choices were revealing deep insights into their personalities.

31. The underlined word “intriguing” in Paragraph 7 is closest in meaning to ______.

A. annoying

B. interesting

C. exciting

D. disappointing

32. In the study, participants were asked to ______.

A. looked at different pictures of shoes

B. wear their favorite shoes

C. take photographs of their commonly worn shoes

D. describe their personality

33. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the study?

A. Expensive shoes are only worn by people with high income.

B. Ankle boots are a kind of practical and functional shoes.

C. People caring about their shoes are worried about their impressions on others.

D. People wearing shabbier and less expensive shoes are interested in politics.

34. What is the purpose of the passage?

A. To explain why we should take care of our shoes.

LONDON, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- A four-year-old child’s ability to draw could be an indicator of intelligence at age 14, according to a study published on Tuesday in the British journal Psychological Science.

The researchers from King’s College London (KCL) studied 7,752 pairs of identical and non-identical twins, and found that the link between drawing and later intelligence was influenced by genes.

At the age of 4, children were asked by their parents to complete a ‘Draw-a-Child’ test. Their drawings were rated from 0 to 12, based on the presen ce and correct number of body-parts, like arms, legs, head, eyes and nose.

The children were also given verbal and non-verbal intelligence tests at ages 4 and 14. According to researchers, the test was devised in the 1920’s to assess children’s intelligence, so it’s not surprising that the test correlated with intelligence at age 4.

However, they found that higher scores on the test were also moderately associated with higher scores of intelligence at 14.

The researchers also measured the heritability of figure drawing. Identical twins share all their genes, whereas non-identical twins only share about 50 percent. Overall, at age 4, drawings from identical twin pairs were more similar to one another than drawings from non-identical twin pairs.

Therefore, the researchers concluded that differences in children’s drawings have an important genetic link. They also found that drawing at age 4 and intelligence at age 14 had a strong genetic link.

“Drawing is an ancient behaviour, dating back beyond 15,000 years ago,” Dr. Rosalind Arden, lead author of the paper from KCL, said that: “This capacity to reproduce figures is a uniquely human ability and a sign of cognitive ability, in a similar way to writing, which transformed the human species’ ability to store informa tion, and build a civilisation.”

36. According to the passage, which of the following statement about ‘Draw-a-Child’

test is true?

A. The test was devised in the 1920’s.

B. The children took the test at four.

C. The test was set to assess children’s intel ligence.

D. 7,752 identical and non-identical twins took part in it.

37. Which of the following words is closest in meaning to the underlined word

“devised” in the 4th paragraph?

A. changed

B. formed

C. designed

D. taken

38. What do we know about the twins from the passage?

A. They were tested on how smart they were once.

B. Twins who look similar to each other draw better pictures.

C. They were chosen to take the drawing test by the researchers.

D. Those who could draw better at 4 tend to be more intelligent at 14.

39. From the last paragraph, we can infer that ___________.

A. only human beings are able to draw pictures

B. drawing helps improve humans’ ability to study

C. one’s intelligence is related to his ability to draw pictures

D. human society develops because of the ability to draw figures

40. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?

A. Identical and Non-identical Twins

B. Drawing and Intelligence Influenced by Genes

C. A Study in the British Journal Psychological Science

D. Children’s Drawings Indicate Intelligence a Decade Later

When the college admission notice arrived at Zhang Yaodong's home on Tuesday, the 18-year-old blind man and his parents in northwest China's Gansu Province heaved a collective sigh of relief. Zhang's admission into the Hubei University of Chinese Medicine symbolizes a rare success for the visually impaired who crave equal access to higher education.

Zhang is legally blind in the left eye and has a minor phototonus in the right eye. He took the college entrance exam, or gaokao, in June, reading and writing his exam on paper printed in large type with a magnifier. His score, 558, was enough to get him into a decent university.

The country has a special education system for the blind, including exclusive primary and secondary schools. When it comes to university, the blind are usually limited to a handful of universities and only eligible for massage and music majors. They gain admission to these schools through a special set of exams. Schools often lack qualified teachers and facilities for blind and visually impaired students.

Zhang does not want to be a masseur. Able to recite several ancient classic medicine texts, he wants to systemically study traditional Chinese medicine instead. This prompted him to attend ordinary primary and secondary schools, unlike the most majority of the population.

During the past 12 years, Zhang battled a learning environment which is unfriendly to the blind. He could not see teachers' writing on the blackboard, his classmates reading it to him instead. Most of the time he simply listened to the teacher and reviewed the lecture based on his memory.

Zhang was diagnosed with congenital eye disease when he was three months old. Since then, his parents have lived frugally in order to provide the necessary medical treatment. Since their son’s birth, the couple has only made three purchases for their 66-square-meter apartment in Tianshui city, a scanner, computer and printer to make his study more convenient.

At the same time, they are trying their best to teach him to be independent and optimistic, His mother, Li Xiaotao said. In addition to his academic success, Zhang's also an award-winning player of Erhu, a Chinese traditional instrument.

"We're grateful the university gave him the chance to study with sighted peers. We won't ask for special care from the school, but will help him adjust to the campus life," said Zhang's mother, adding that she does not view Zhang as any different from other students, regardless of his physical deficiency.

41. The first two paragraphs in the passage imply that ___________.

A. Zhang took a different college entrance exam in June

B. few blind students are admitted to a university with sighted peers

C. Zhang Yaodong was born blind in the left eye but healthy in the other

D. Zhang Yaodong and his parents felt excited when receiving the notice

42. From the passage, we know that ___________.

A. Zhang Yaodong’s classmates helped him review the lecture

B. when in high school, Zhang fought hard against his unfriendly school

C. blind children receive education in special schools in China

D. qualified teachers for the blind are greatly needed in middle schools

43. The underlined word “population” in the passage refers to ___________.

A. blind middle school students

B. healthy middle school students

C. Zhang Yaodong’s classmates

D. Zhang Yaodong’s schoolmates

44. The writer’s attitude towards Zhang’s parents is ___________.

A. sympathetic

B. positive

C. neutral

D. unclear

45. This passage is probably ___________.

A. a news report

B. an essay

C. a composition

D. a journal

There is a huge range of styles and levels of yoga. Instead of just holding postures while breathing deeply, yoga has become a full-body workout involving many new elements. Check out the following trendy styles.

A. Hot yoga

Imagine yourself in a studio that is heated to 40 C, moving rapidly from one pose to the next for 90 minutes and leaving puddles of sweat behind. What an intense experience. Yes, that’s what hot yoga is all about. It’s soaring in popularity.

Fans of hot yoga believe it forces the body to work harder and lose weight.

B. Aerial/anti-gravity yoga

Many yogis struggle with advanced poses like the headstand or handstand. But now, anti-gravity yoga means such challenges are easily overcome. With a silk hammock suspended from the ceiling, this style allows participants to stretch further and hold positions longer.

It is fun and energetic. Being suspended helps decompress tight joints, promote blood flow, and relieve pressure.

C. Laughter yoga

If laughter is the best medicine and yoga offers countless health benefits, the combination of the two must be infallible. In this seemingly silly and weird style of yoga, practitioners clap joyously, milk imaginary cows and sometimes roar like a lion. The aim is to induce laughter, which has been found to burn calories and lower blood sugar levels. It combines gentle yoga breathing, stretching, and simulated unconditional laughter.

D. Wall Yoga

Wall Yoga uses the wall for centering and isometric conditioning. Whether you are beginner, intermediate, or advanced yoga student, it offers an innovative and safe way to practice. Your wall becomes your partner, your supporter, and your friend as you lean on it, align yourself with it, push off of it, and press into it. The wall not only helps you when you practice yoga, it adds another degree of challenge to your practice.

E. SUP Yoga

With standup paddle-boarding (SUP) being so popular, it makes sense that ocean lovers would want to take their yoga onto the water. The width and stability of the boards makes them viable "floating yoga mats," though just like working out on the BOSU, the ever-moving surface makes you engage many tiny muscles that never get used in most regular workouts.

F. Aqua Yoga

If you prefer to be in the water rather than floating on it, aqua yoga is a low-impact, more body-balancing alternative to land-based versions. It's a favorite of pregnant women, disabled persons, and others with limited mobility.

The following people would like to start yoga but don't know how to start and choose the right class. Please work as the receptionist in a yoga center and recommend a

yoga class that suits their needs best.

46.Charles Matkin, after reading many books on yoga, believes that yoga's meditative

approach to fitness is quite good. He determines, though merely a beginner now, to keep at it. But he also looks for some new challenges in the daily practice.

47.Colette Barr is a happy expectant mother who would like to keep on exercising during

the pregnancy. She expects to join in the yoga lesson that is safest in any stage of pregnancy. Meanwhile it strengthens the muscles that she will use when giving birth.

48.Gerry Broom, a successful CEO, desires to steady her nerves when she is off work

with yoga. She sits at the computer all day long in her office, so she prefers some outdoor activities to catch some cleansing air rather than stale air conditioning.

49.Will Foden opened his mind to Yoga after a serious injury in the shoulder. Now

he has to wave goodbye to basketball, but he still hopes to get a full body work-out.

By improving circulation, he expects an all over health.

50.Gus Russell, an 11-year-old boy, is actually signing up for a yoga class under

his mother’s request, who considers him to be very overweight. He himself also wishes to activate all the muscles and become more flexible besides burning calories.

第二节读写任务(共1小题;满分25分)

阅读下面短文,然后按要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。

September is around the corner, and it means the start of school. These days, planning a young child’s schedule is a big challenge for parents. The challenge is no longer finding activities to fill a child’s da y in summer; it is saying no to the hundreds of options available. Our mailbox is filled with brochures urging us to sign our kids up for classes from cooking to dance.

Educators are themselves discouraged by the number of special classes that many childr en attend. In the name of “enrichment,” three-year-olds not only go to preschool in the morning but study French or gymnastics after lunch. One teacher tells of a four-year-old asking for help in the toilet before hurrying off to tennis. Another teacher says that children sometimes hold on to her at pickup time. What happened to unstructured time?

A generous explanation is that we enjoy giving children opportunities we never had. The truth however is that many parents have doubts about how much time they spend away from their families. And one way to reduce this guilt is to believe that time spent in these classes is somehow more beneficial to children than the time we know we should be giving them ourselves.

Come September, children across the country will finish a full day of kindergarten, only to attend an after-school program until 6 P.M., when a working mom or dad comes to take them home. That’s too much for a five-year old. Our own busy schedules are no excuse for burdening a young child’s.

Luo Li 读写任务:(One possible version)

The author thinks that parents shouldn’t fill their children’s time with varieties of classes only because they are too busy. These classes are discouraging and also a burden for a kid of this age.

I can’t agree more with the author. Parents shouldn’t ask their children to attend various classes after school because too many classes will burden their children and deprive their time to rest or to spend with their family.

I was once forced by my parents to attend a writing class at weekends when I was in Junior school. Worried about my writing, my parents chose a class for me, hoping

that I could improve my writing skills. However, burdened with tons of schoolwork in school, I felt tired and just wanted to have a good rest at weekend, so this class didn’t benefit me at all.

Therefore, instead of getting their children to attend after-school classes, parents’d better allow their children to make their own decision, which will be more beneficial to them.

高三英语考试题

高二英语 阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) 第一节(共15小题,每小题2分,满分30分) A Edmund Halley was an English scientist who lived over 200 years ago. He studied the observations of comets(彗星) which other scientists had made. The orbit of one particular comet was a very difficult mathematical problem. He could not figure it out. Neither could other scientists who dealt with such problems. However, Halley had a friend named Isaac Newton, who was a brilliant mathematician. Newton thought he had already worked out that problem, but he could not find the papers on which he had done it. He told Halley that the orbit of a comet had the shape of an ellipse. Now Halley set to work. He figured out the orbits of some of the comets that had been observed by scientists. He made a surprising discovery. The comets that had appeared in the years 1531, 1607 and 1682 all had the same orbit. Yet their appearances had been 75 to 76 years apart. This seemed very strange to Halley. Three different comets followed the same orbit. The more Halley thought about, the more he thought that there had not been three different comets, as people thought. He decided that they had simply seen the same comet three times. The comet had gone away and had come back again. It was an astonishing idea! Halley felt certain enough to make a prediction of what would happen in the future. He decided that this comet would appear in the year 1758. There were 53 years to go before Halley's prediction could be tested. In 1758 the comet appeared in the sky. Halley did not see it, for he had died some years before. Ever since then that comet had been called Halley's comet, in his honour. 1.Halley made his discovery________. A.by doing experiments B.by means of his own careful observation C.by using the work of other scientists D.by chance 2.Halley made a surprising but correct prediction in the year________. A.1704B.1705C.1706D.1707 3.This text in general is about________. A.Halley and other scientists B.the orbit of a comet C.Newton and Halley D.Halley and his discovery 4.Which of the following is TRUE? A.Edmund Halley was an American scientist. B.Halley made his discovery by doing experiment. C.Isaac Newton was a famous mathematician. D.The orbit of a comet had the shape of a round. B Recordings of angry bees are enough to send big, tough African elephants running away, a new study says. Beehives (蜂窝)—either recorded or real—may even prevent elephants from damaging farmer’s crops. In 2002, scientist Lucy King and her team found that elephants avoid certain trees with bees living in them. Today, Lucy wants to see if African honeybees might discourage elephants from eating crops. But before she asked farmer to go to the trouble of setting up beehives on their farms, she needed to find out if the bees would scare elephants away. Lucy found a wild beehive inside a tree in northern Kenya and set up a recorder. Then she threw a stone into the beehive, which burst into life. Lucy and her assistant hid in their car until the angry bees had calmed down. Next,Lucy searched out elephant families in Samburu National Reserve in northern Kenya and put a speaker in a tree close to each family. From a distance, Lucy switched on the pre-recorded sound of angry bees while at the same time recording the elephants with a video camera. Half the elephant groups left the area within ten seconds. Out of a total of 17 groups, only one group ignored the sound of the angry bees. Lucy reported that all the young elephants immediately ran to their mothers to hide under them. When Lucy played the sound of a waterfall (瀑布) instead of the angry bees to many of the same elephant families, the animals were undisturbed. Even after four minutes, most of the groups stayed in one place. Lucy is now studying whether the elephants will continue to avoid the sound of angry bees after hearing it several times. She hasn’t tested enough groups yet to know, but her initial (最初的) results were promising enough to begin trials with farmers. She has now begun placing speakers in the fields to see if elephants are frightened away. 5. We know from the passage that elephants may be frightened of . A. loud noises B. some crops C. video cameras D. angry bees 6. As mentioned in the passage, Lucy . A. works by herself in Africa B. needs to test more elephant groups C. has stopped elephants eating crops D. has got farmers to set up beehives on their farms 7. Why did Lucy throw a stone into a wild beehive? A. To record the sound of bees. B. To make a video of elephants. C. To see if elephants would run away. D. To find out more about the behavior of bees. 8. Which of the following is true according to the passage? A. Young elephants ignore African honeybees. B. Waterfalls can make elephants stay in one place. C. Elephants do not go near trees with bees living in them. D. Farmers do not allow Lucy to conduct tests in their fields.
