Precision forging is normally taken to mean close-to-final form or close tolerance forging. In the final analysis it is not a special technology of its own, but a refinement of existing technologies to a point where the forged part can be used with little or no subsequent machining. The improvements cover not only the forging method proper, but extend to preheating, descaling, lubrication, and temperature control practices.

Antifriction Bearings
Antifriction Bearings operate with rolling elements (either balls or rollers), and hence rolling resistance, rather than slicing friction, predominates. The cause of rolling resistance is the deformation of mating surfaces of the rolling element and the raceway on which it rolls. The three basic types of antifriction bearings are ball bearings, roller bearings, needle bearings. Ball and roller bearings can be designed to absorb thrust loads in addition to radial loads, whereas needle bearings are limited to radial load applications only.

In Situ Desulphurisation
Partial removal of the sulfur values in fossil hydrocarbon fuels can be accomplished in place during the application of so called “in situ” recovery techniques. Perhaps the earliest of these techniques to be explored was in situ coal gasification. During the 1940’s and 1950’s, both the Russians and the British carried out extensive field trials with in situ coal gasification and demonstrated the practical feasibility of obtaining a low BTU gas product from the process. More recently in situ coal gasification trials have been conducted in Alberta and several projects in the Colorado oil shales have focused on in situ retorting of the shale to liberate the hydrocarbon. In situ recovery techniques using fire, steam flooding, or a combination of both, also appear to be one of the most practical routes for fluidizing the heavy bitumens of deeply buried oil sands thus enabling their recovery by drilled wells rather than mining.
