Unit One

I.Background Information

Types of Examination Questions in the US and UK: There are two main types of examination questions in the US and UK. They are multiple choice and essay. The other types are blank-filling and match, and different teachers use different types, such as a typical exam. It might consist of 50 multiple choice questions for one point each and two essay questions for 25 points each.

2. settle down 安定下来,安稳下来

Text A

vt. 审视,视察

1. lie: 主要有三个意思:一是表示“躺”或“平放”,二是表示“位于”,三是表示“说谎”。用于以上三个词义时,均为不及物动词。

e. g. Don’t lie in bed all morning. 别一个上午都躺在床上。

The book lay open on the desk. 那本书摊开着放在桌上。

Don’t lay your coat on the bed. 不要把你的外衣放在床上。

The small town lies among the mountains. 小镇位于群山之中。

I’m sorry I lied to you. 我很抱歉向你撒了谎。

Lies have short legs. 谎言总是站不住脚的。

Many women lie about their age. 许多妇女常在自己的年龄上说谎话。

注意:lay 有两个常见意思:一是表示“放”、“摆”(及物),二是表示“下(蛋)”(及物或不及物)。

e. g. Lay your coat on the bed. 把你的外衣放在床上。

Are your hens laying yet? 你家的母鸡下蛋了吗?

Will you please lay the table for dinner? 请你摆好餐具准备吃饭好吗?

lie & lay区别:这两个词经常被混淆的有时不是其意思,而是其词形。注意下表所示:

e. g. As for you, you ought to be ashamed of yoursel

e. g. This is the best present I’ve ever had. 这是我所得到的最好礼物。

vt. &vi. 赠送,提出,呈现

e.g.

4. pay attention to 注意

e.g. I hope you will pay attention to this problem. 希望你对此给予关注。

Please pay attention to the difference between the two words.

请注意这两个词之间的区别。

You must pay attention to your study. 你必须专心学习。

5. smell n. 味道,气味,嗅v. 闻, 嗅, 有嗅觉

e. g. These dogs have a marvelous sense of smell. 这些狗有非常敏锐的嗅觉。

I could smell that the milk was not fresh. 我闻得出牛奶不新鲜。

e. g. You cannot quit smoking too soon. 你愈早戒烟愈好。

You must quit smoking. Most important of all, you should start taking exercise.

7. used to +do sth 过去常常做某事

e.g. I weigh less than I used to. 我的体重比以前轻了。

He used to get up early and take an hour's walk before breakfast.

他过去常常起床很早并且在早餐前散步一小时。

be used to + 名词习惯于某事

e.g. He is used to eating out all the time. 他已经习惯在外面吃饭了。

Are you used to the food here? 你习惯吃这儿的饭菜吗?

8. instead adv. 代替,顶替

e.g.: In other words, you'll come instead. Right? 换句话说,你将代替他来,对吗?

If you can't sign your name, make a cross instead. 你如果不会签名,画一个十字也可以。instead of 代替,而不是...

e.g.: I gave him advice instead of money. 我给了他忠告,而不是钱。

The economy is shrinking instead of growing. 经济正在萎缩而不是在增长中。

9. seem v. 像是,似乎

e. g. He seems to know everything. 他似乎什么都懂。

The children seem unaffected emotionally by their parent's divorce.

那孩子在情绪上似乎未受到父母离婚的影响。

Things are not always what they seem (to be). 事情并不总是与表像一致。

It seems like years since I last saw you. 好像有多年没见到你了。

10. encourage v. 鼓励,激励,支持

e. g. Peter, my English teacher, never fails to encourage us to study hard.

我的英文老师彼得总是鼓励我们要好好用功。

Her success encouraged me to try the same thing.

她的成功鼓励我去做同样的事。

High prices for farm products encouraged farming. 农产品价格的提高有助于农业。

11. by the end of 到...时为止,在...之前多指时间,常用于完成时态,也用于将来时态

e. g. By the end of last month they had planted 10,000 trees.

到上个月月底他们已经栽了一万棵树。

The population of this town will be 1,500,000 by the end of 2010.

到2010年年底这个城镇的人口将有一百五十万。

at the end of “在……末/终点”,指时间或位置。一般说来,at the end of用于表示具体事物或场所的场合,它也可以用来表示比喻意。。

e. g. At the end of the road you can see the hospital.在这条路的终点你可以看到医院。

The sports meeting will be held at the end of this month.运动会将在这个月的月底举行。

The school is situated at the end of the street.该校位于这条街的尽头。

in the end“最后,最终”,与at last/finally同义。

12. make a difference 有影响,起(重要)作用

e. g. The sea air has made a difference to (ie improved) her health.
