Part IV Reading Comprehension

Directions:There are 3 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them

there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should

decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on

the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.

Passage One

Questions 61 to 65 are based on the following passage:

On May 29, 1973, Thomas Bradley, a black man, was elected mayor of Los Angeles. Los Angeles is the third largest city in the United States, with a population of three million. About sixt een percent of the city’s population are black.

News of this elction appeared on the front pages of newspapers everywhere in the United States. Here is how one major newspaper reported the event: Los Angeles Elects Bradley Mayor, Defeating Yorty---Black Win 56% of Votes.

Bradley called his victory “the fulfillment of dream.” During his childhood and youth, people had kept telling him, “You can’t do this, you can’t go there, because you’re a Negro.” Nevertheless he had won a decisive victory over a man who had been the city’s mayor for three times. Bradley had won percent of the votes; Yorty had won percent. Los Angeles voters had many opportunities to judge Thomas Bradley and to form an opinion of him. The son of a poor farmer from Texas, he joined the Los Angeles police force in 1940. During his twenty-one years on the police force he earned a law degree by attending school at night. He was elected to the city council ten years ago. At the time of Los Angeles election three other American cities already had black mayors, but none of those cities had as large a population as Los Angeles. Besides, the percentage of blacks in those cities was much larger. Cleveland, Ohio, was thirty-six percent black when Carl Stokes was elected mayor of Cleveland in 1967. In the same year Richard Hatcher was elected mayor of Gary, Indiana, which was fifty-five percent black. In Newark, New Jersey, sixty percent of the population were black when Kenneth Glibson was elected

in 1970. Thus the election of a black mayor in those cities was not very surprising.

In Los Angeles thousands of white citizens voted for Thomas Bradley because they believe he would be a better mayor than the white candidate. Bradley had spent forty-eight of his fifty-five years in Los Angeles. Four years ago Bradley lost the mayoral election to Yorty. This time Bradley won.

Passage Two

Questions 66 to 70 arc based on the following passage:

The . generates about four billion tons of solid waste a year. More than 90 percent is composed of agricultural and mining waste. About 3 percent is from industrial wastes. 250 million tons of garbage comes out from homes, schools, office buildings, stores and hospitals.

This mass of metals, paper, food, plastic, rubber and glass, which is all mixed together, seems of no earthly use to anyone.

Or is it Many efforts across the country indicate that new technology, properly applied, might some day turn these millions of tons of garbage into an excellent source of raw materials for new uses.

Several new projects are carried out to study the possibility of treating wastes through pyrolysis-- a system of reducing garbage to basic chemical, liquids and gases which have commercial value. In Florida, a special tube system provides automatic transport of garbage to a central collection building.

In short, many new ideas are being tested, and many will be needed, since no one method is likely to prove suitable everywhere.

However, many difficult economic and social questions must be answered before real progress can be made. Can recovered materials compete with new materials What will be needed as encouragement to make resource recovery work Will citizens pay the cost of changing our waste system

Passage Three

Questions 71 to 75 are based on the following passage:

Kate, a student in 8th grade, asked lots of questions in math class---until the teacher told her to stop. “He said I was confusing the other kids with my questions,” she recalls. “When boys asked questions, he took them a lot more seriously.” You might have thought that such obvious forms of discrimination had ended by now. But Esther Greenglass, a psychology professor at York University in Toronto, syas many recent studies have found that girls may still be faced with mixed messages about self-confidence and success, which can lower their self-esteem and discoverage them from achieving their potential.

The problem worsens at about age 11 or 12, when girls start hitting puberty(青春期)and discovering boys. Many girls’ grades drop, and so does their self-esteem. “Girls get the message that, if you’re going to be popular, you can’t be too smart because the boys won’t like you,” says Greenglass, who has written extensively on sex roles and discrimination. Often, girls also sense that boys are considered more capable. In studies in the United States, researchers found that when teachers asked questions, they almost always made eye contact with boys, unless they had attended courses raising their level of awareness. Adding to the problem, according to Greenglass, is the lack of female role models in old textbooks still found in many Canadian schools.

How are girls’ attitudes affected Studies have shown that boys usually attribute their successes to their superior ability, while girls attribute their own success to luck. When boys fail at a task, they tend to blame it on external factors; when girls fail, they blame their own lack of ability. Boys are more likely to try a second time to succeed.

71. The first paragraph intends to tell us that_____

A) girls usually ask more questions than boys in class

B) girls often confuse teachers with many questions

C) teachers tend to give much more attention to boys

D) teachers believe that boys ask more serious questions

72. Findings by Professor Esther Greenglass indicate that ________

A ) sex discrimination in schools has disappeared in Canada

B) Canadian school girls are more self-confident than boys

C) school girls in Canada are confused about their roles

D) in Canada girls and boys achieve equal success at school

73. Researchers in the United States found that when teachers asked

questions, ______.

A) they would first turned to boys for answers

B) they wanted to raise the awareness of boys

C) boys responded to them immediately

D) girls avoided eye contact with teachers

74. We can learn from the passage that girls’ lack of self-confidence

has led to ______.

A) their misjudgment of their own success and failure

B) boys’ misunderstanding of their of their superiority

C) their inability to achieve academic success

D) boys’ blamin g external factors for their failures相信能就一定能

75. What is the best title of the passage?

A) Male and Female Role Models.

B) Puberty and Sex Difference.

C) Girls, Boys, and Success.

D) Sex Roles and Discrimination.

Part V Translation from English into Chinese Directions: In this part there is a passage with 5 underlined parts, numbered 76 to 80. After reading the passage carefully, you

should translate the underlined parts into Chinese. Remember

to write your translation on the Translation Sheet.

(76)In many business, computers have largely replaced paperwork, because they are fast, flexible, and do not make mistakes. As one banker said, “Unlike humans, computers never have a bad day.” And they are honest. Many banks advertise that their transactions are “un touched by human hands” and therefore safe from human temptation. Obviously, computers have no reason to steal money. But they also have no conscience, and the growing number of computer crimes show they can be used to steal.

Computer criminals don’t use guns. (77)And even if they are caught, it is hard to punish them because there are no witness and often no evidence.

A computer cannot remember who used it: it simply does what it is told. The head teller at a Salt Lake City bank used a computer to steal more than one and a half million dollars in just four years. No one noticed this theft because she moved the money from one account to another.

(78)Each time a customer she had robbed questioned the balance in his account, the teller claimed a computer error, then replaced the missing money from someone else’s account. This person was caught only because she was a drug user. When the police broke up an illegal drug operation, her name was in the records.

Some employees use the computer’s power to take revenge on employers they consider unfair. (79)Recently, a large company fired an employee for reasons that involved his personal rather than his professional life. He was its computer-tape librarian. In his last forty days that he was allowed to work for the company, he erased all the company’s computerized records.

Most computer criminals have been minor employees. Now police wonder if this is “the tip of the iceberg.” As one official says, “I have the feeling that there is more crime out there than we are catching. What we are seeing now in all so poorly done. (80) I wonder what the real experts are doing—the ones who really know how a computer works.”

新理念大学英语三级阅读教程

本文节选自Iron John: A Book About Men Iron John: A Book About Men by Robert Bly. Copyright 1994, 2004 by Robert Bly We talk a great deal about "the American man," as if there were some constant quality that remained stable over decades, or even within a single decade. The men who live today have veered far away from the Saturnian, old-man-minded farmer, proud of his introversion, who arrived in New England in 1630, willing to sit through three services in an unheated church. In the South, an expansive, motherbound cavalier developed, and neither of these two "American men" resembled the greedy railroad entrepreneur that later developed in the Northeast, nor the reckless I-will-do-without culture settlers of the West. 【这一段里作者提到哪几种美国人?他提这些的目的是什么?】 Even in our own era the agreed-on model has changed dramatically. During the fifties, for example, an American character appeared with some consistency that became a model of manhood adopted by many men: the Fifties male. He got to work early, labored responsibly, supported his wife and children, and admired discipline. Reagan is a sort of mummified version of this dogged type. This sort of man didn't see women's souls well, but he appreciated their bodies; and his view of culture and America's part in it was boyish and optimistic. Many of his qualities were strong and positive, but underneath the charm and bluff there was, and there remains, much isolation, deprivation, and passivity. Unless he has an enemy, he isn't sure that he is alive. The Fifties man was supposed to like football, be aggressive, stick up for the United States, never cry, and always provide. But receptive space or intimate space was missing in this image of a man. The personality lacked some sense of flow. The psyche lacked compassion in a way that encouraged the unbalanced pursuit of the Vietnam war, just as, later, the lack of what we might call "garden" space inside Reagan's head led to his callousness and brutality toward the powerless in El Salvador【查工具书:是怎么回事?】, toward old people here, the unemployed, schoolchildren, and poor people in general. 【Fifties Male有什么特点?】 The Fifties male had a clear vision of what a man was, and what male

大学英语三级B级-阅读理解(三)

大学英语三级B级-阅读理解(三) (总分:25.00,做题时间:90分钟) 一、单项选择题(总题数:5,分数:25.00) Task 6 The sense of sound is one of our most important means of knowing what is going on around us. Sound has a wasted product, too, in the form of noise. Noise has been called unwanted sound. Noise is growing and it may get much worse before it gets any better. Scientists, for several years, have been studying how noise affects people and animals. They are surprised by what they have learned. Peace and quiet are becoming harder to find. Noise pollution is a threat that should be looked at carefully. There is a saying about it being so noisy that you can't hear yourself think. Doctors who study noise believe that we must sometimes hear ourselves think. If we don't, we may have headaches, other aches and pains, or even worse mental problems. Noise adds more tension (紧张) to a society that already faces enough stress. But noise is not a new problem. In ancient Rome, people complained so much about noise that the government stopped chariots (四轮马车) from moving through the streets at night! Ways of making less noise are now being tested. There are even laws controlling noise. We cannot return to the "good old days" of peace and quiet. But we can reduce noise--if we shout loudly enough about it. 大学英语三级阅读模拟试题集 Model Test 1 Passage One Suppose you set your mind to work on the problem of how you would use your own eyes if you had 3 more days to see. If with the oncoming darkness of the 3rd night you knew that the sun would never rise for you again, how would you spend those 3 precious days? What would you most want to let your gaze rest upon? I, naturally, should want most to see the things which have become dear to me through my years of darkness. You, too, would want to let your eyes rest long on the things that have become dear to you so that you could take the memory of them with you in the night that loomed (降临) before you. I should want to see the people whose kindness and gentleness and companionship have made my life worth living. First I should like to gaze long upon the face of my teacher, Mrs. Anne Sullivan Macy, who came to me when I was a child and opened the outer world to me. I should want not merely the outline of her face, so that I could cherish it in my memory, but to study that face and find in it the living evidence of the sympathetic tenderness and patience with which she accomplished the difficult task of my education. I should like to see in her eyes that strength of character which has enabled her to stand firm in the face of difficulties, and that compassion for all humanity which she has revealed to me so often.
