From the forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, and Summer Palace, you can see that Beijing has retained a lot of the color of old Chinese life. But there are also a great number of new constructions in Beijing , including many skyscrapers, cloverleaf intersections and flyovers. These have given beijing the look of a modern metropolis.
Question : Mr. President, I’m sure millions of Chinese people are watching this program now . Iwonder if you would like to say a few words to them first.//
Answer: Well, I do have an opening statement. But first let me thank you for this unique opportunity. It’s a great honor for me to be the first American president to speak to the Chinese people in a live broadcast. // And I feel as if I were talking to old friends, who, while teen years ageo, Barbara and Icame to your beautiful land when I was , as you said , Chief of the United States Liaison Office , And for us , returning to Beijing is a homecoming.// Our work here was a source of great personal satisfaction, a happy challenging time in our lives. And we actually went to church here, and indeed our daughter was baptized in our faith here. And we rode bicycles down the hutungs of Beijing, and came to have a general feeling of affection for the Chinese people.
Reform and opening to the outside world is our country’s unchangeable basic policy. But that kind American family has become increasingly less common in the last thirty years.// Beginning in the nineteen-fifties, a wave of social change swept through American life. how do you comment on president jiang zemin’s visit to the united states and president clinton’s visit to china?
I think the fact that our two presidents, the president of china and the president of the united
state, have visited each other’s countries, eh, is indicative of the fact that our two countries are coming closer together and cooperating in a whole host of areas.
And I think that we Americans and Chinese citizens are very fortunate in that both our presidents like each other and they have a good close personal relationship.
They ‘ve met each other many many times over the past 6 years. They’ve come to know each other, they respect each other.
六、They, eh, they meet each other in an, in an attitude of mutual respect and mutual
cooperation and I think that’s beneficial to the Chinese people and, and also to the American people and beneficial to the world at large.
Could you tell me what impression president jiang zemin gave you during his visit to United States?
Answer; well, president jiang’s visit to the United States was a great success. It was also, it’s a success from the standpoint of view of the government relations, but it’s also I think a great personal success.
The American people saw the president of china zemin and they liked him. They like him
because he had a smiling face and he portrayed himself as a friend of the American people. He, as the representative of the Chinese people, had a great understanding of the American people and history.
And I think he advanced the Sino American relations a great deal by that visit. It was a very successful visit and the American people like the president of china and I think primarily because of that visit.
Did you have a chance to meet president jiang zemin when he paid his official visit to the United States?
Yes, in fact when he was in Washington for the official visit, I was able to attend the luncheon in his honor. That was hosted by vice president Gore and I ended up by sitting very close to the president.
And much to my surprise he speaks quite good English and so we were able to have a, a very brief but pleasant conversation.
I actually was, I guess like a lot of American, expecting someone much more formal and stiff, but he came across as very humane, with a sense of humor, which American particularly appreciate.
And I think that help them to get to know him and to relax with him an d fell that they could trust him.
Can you tell me why there are some people from the congress of the United States who oppose to president Clinton’s visit to china?
America speak with many different tones, many different voices. For example, simply
because five or ten members of the Us congress might say something, that does not mean it’s the policy of the American government, or the American people.
Because there’re five hundred and thir ty-five members of the us congress and so you have all sorts of diverse opinions there.
And simply because one congressman may say eh, say something that the Chinese government or he Chinese people don’t like, that does not mean that’s the policy of the us government.
We need to watch and see what the president of the United States says, Mr.Clinton, or what the secretary of state says, that represents the policy of the United States government.

Newsweek Why We Must Fire Bad Teachers The relative decline of American education at the elementary- and high-school levels has long been a national embarrassment as well as a threat to the nation’s future. Once upon a time, American students tested better than any other students in the world. Now, ranked against European schoolchildren, America does about as well as Lithuania, behind at least 10 other nations. For much of this time—roughly the last half century—professional educators believed that if they could only find the right pedagogy, the right method of instruction, all would be well. They tried New Math, open classrooms, Whole Language—but nothing seemed to achieve significant or lasting improvements. Yet in recent years researchers have discovered something that may seem obvious, but for many reasons was overlooked or denied. What really makes a difference, what matters more than the class size or the textbook, the teaching method or the technology, or even the curriculum, is the quality of the teacher. Much of the ability to teach is innate—an ability to inspire young minds as well as control unruly classrooms that some people instinctively possess (and some people definitely do not). Teaching can be taught, to some degree, but not the way many graduate schools of education do it, with a lot of insipid or marginally relevant theorizing and pedagogy. In any case the research shows that within about five years, you can generally tell who is a good teacher and who is not.
2 What will the role of universities be in this globalized economy? How will they contribute to improving society through innovation that will improve the quality of life and support economic growth? How will they prepare their graduates who will extract the best and explore the greatest in this increasingly complex society?// It is important to remember that undergraduate education and post-graduate education are tightly linked to research. Our education programs should ensure that the students are learning in an atmosphere characterized by the pursuit of new knowledge and process of discovery. An interrelated educational program will create a flow of young， bright and uninhibitedminds to work on the frontier of discovery.// The fundamental mission of a university is the creation of new knowledge which sometimes has immediate practical applications. But that can never be the only goal. And making it a primary goal will frequently be short-sighted. Basic contributions to knowledge should be valued for being exactly that. Our university has an almost unique role in fostering such contribution.// Choosing the right people is the first and perhaps the most crucial step in ensuring an innovative environment. There are three types of people that can be important. The first class of individuals consists of fanciful visionaries. The second class of important people in innovative environment consists of revolutionary explorers. The third class of individuals consists of uninhibited executors.

They have hardly changed their attitudes towards Chinese. At one time they proudly declared that they knew English only. George Washington, we are told, was a leader who would have preferred to have been a farmer. Thomas Jefferson, a writer. Martin Luther King, Jr., a preacher. These men were roused from lives of perfunctory achievement, our legends have it, not because they chose their own exceptionalism, but because we, the people, chose it for them. We -- seeing greatness in them that they were too humble to observe themselves -- conferred on them uncommon paths. Historical circumstance became its own call of duty, and the logic of democracy proved itself through the answer. Neil Armstrong was a hero of this stripe: constitutionally humble, circumstantially noble. Nearly every obituary written for him has made a point of emphasizing his sense of privacy, his sense of humility, his sense of the ironic ordinary. And yet every aspect of Armstrong’s life made clear: On that day in 1969, he acted on our behalf, out of a sense of mission that was communal rather than personal. The reluctant hero is also the self-sacrificing hero.
