Describe a time you were not allowed to use your mobile phone.

You should say:

when and where it was;

why you were not allowed to use your phone;

what you wanted to use your phone for;

and explain how you felt about not being able to use your phone.

Last Monday, I went to visit a famous grand museum that is located in the center of the city. The administrator said that we are not allowed to use our mobile phones and cameras during the visit because taking photographs of exhibitions are not allowed. I obeyed the rules, handed in my mobile phone and other personal stuff and enjoyed the visit. Suddenly, it occurred to me that I didn’t tell my mom that I would be late for home and I took the only keys of my home. She possibly couldn’t get into the rooms if she came home earlier than me. Then I couldn’t focus on my visit. I wanted to use my mobile phone to call her. But the workers in the museum told me that they could only return our mobile phones after the visit is over, otherwise they will shoulder the responsibility of any loss of visitors’ stuff.

I was worried and restless all the time during the following visit.

This is the first time that I wanted to use my phone so much. I felt a great sense of unease and danger if I lost the contacts by mobile phones. The most key point is we are in the era of science and technology. Mobile phones have become the most common product that most people have access to. It has become a normal habit that whenever you wanna use it, you can use it. If you can’t, it seems that

you’re deprived of some basic need. We often say that we rely too much on our electronic devices, but I have to say they are really helpful in all sorts of emergencies.

Describe a challenging experience you had

You should say:

What experience it was;

When you had it;

Why it was challenging;

And explain how you felt about it.

Talking about the most challenging as well as the most impressive experience in last two years, I would definitely say that it was keeping two parrots at home. My brother gave me two parrots (they should be called Budgerigar) as a surprise gift when my summer vacation began in last year. At first, I was overjoyed when hearing that I need to shoulder the whole responsibility to take care of them. In the following several days, I searched much information on the Internet to get to know its food list, living habits and behaviours, even the possible symptoms of getting ill. Then I bought them a nice and bigger cage as their “luxury flat”to offer them more space for activities. Preparing daily food and water, talking to them and observing them, I patiently did all what I could do to fully shoulder the responsibility as their owner.

As I said it was very challenging because I found it was so hard to keep two LITTLE things! I need to pay great attention, efforts and patience to complete the daily feeding and cleaning, which was more challenging than the daily tasks in online games. Moreover, my nice talking and observing couldn’t do any help to train them to listen to me, even be a little bit friendly to me! I thought the training to birds was so a piece of cake before keeping them. When I approached them more closer than usual, they would flapped their wings and flew around the whole cage, even pecked me badly. As for the most important point, they could be making noises all the time during the day. It was a period when I didn’t feel like hearing any bird songs, so-called “birds’ singing”. It was a great sense of helplessness when

my passion met with my frustration in keeping them, especially when I found what could I do was only to deal with their dropping waste and the falling-out feathers. Finally I realized that keeping pets is a thing that “Love me much (not little), love me longer”. Taking the responsibility for your pet is much more challenging than saying that. You have to think carefully before having a plan to keep a pet. Last but not the least, you need to take care of it throughout its whole life to experience what responsibility is.

Describe an impressive work of art (such as painting or sculpture) you saw.

You should say:

what it is;

when and where you first saw this work of art;

what it looks like;

and explain why you like it.

I didn’t have any special interest in the works of art actually. However, last summer I went to an Agriculture Carnival Festival in Beijing and saw an impressive hand-made work of art there. I remembered that there were many exhibition stands there. Most exhibitions are featured Agro-products. I was attracted to walk into a special exhibition stand, which was decorated as a round-roof hut. Then I found an adorable rabbit that was made of straws! Or say the straws were knitted to make up the body of the rabbit. It was a kind of special, rough, tough and dark-brown straw. The eyes of the rabbit were made of two watermelon seeds. The nose and mouth were made of red beans. The artisan even made a cute dress for the rabbit by a piece of selected and thin bark. I definitely confirmed that it was a piece of great work of art! Then I found kangaroos, cats and dogs that were made of this kind of straw on the wall of the “hut”. I took the tiny rabbit home at a cost of 40 yuan. I love it and I couldn’t help taking it away with me.

I say it was impressive because it was so outstanding in all Agro-products there. Others were good but only the hand-made straw animals showed a delicate and exquisite sense of art beauty. Besides that, they had extraordinarily attractive appearance than those plant products and agriculture tools. And they concentrated the artisan’

s intelligence and skills. In Chinese, there’s a saying “to make the ugly beautiful”to speak highly of this kind of people. The artisans who made up these straw animals turned the useless straws into valuable works of art. They created art as well as the new wealth of the world.

In many parts of world, Children have more freedom than they used to have. Is this a positive or negative development?

Many parents today have trusted their children with much more independence in their lives than in the past. While some people think that it might lead to desirable

results, I tend to hold concerns towards this trend.

One of my major concerns is safety. Life is complicated nowadays with more potential dangers, but children are not always able to take sensible precautions, because they have less experience of and therefore less awareness of adverse Consequences. For example,they may have never come across robbery, so they may assume that this can never happen to them. Parents should, thus, intervene to help their children understand and manage risk.

Another concern is in considering long-term interests. Young people sometimes have a tendency to prioritize short-term needs and wants over long-term goals. They may, for instance, choose to attend a sporting event or social occasion rather than study for an exam that is weeks in the future. Parents should help their children by insisting that certain responsibilities are met before

It is true that parents should allow their adolescent children a degree Of autonomy, because children can learn from their own mistakes and get to the world better if given some chances.But young people have the inborn features that they are always curious about new experience without being aware Of possible consequences in many cases, and considering the fact that they are well exposed to vile behavior and violent images in the media and on the Internet these days, it is right that parent should take a step back and reconsider the situation.

In summary, parents have a responsibility to both care for and prepare their children before they are granted certain privileges and responsibilities at the age of 18. Having some more intervention in children's life is actually helping them become adequate adults later on. 309 words

Well, I would like to go Las Vegas. The city is around 125 kilometres away from my town, Bullhead City in Arizona. So if I could go there, I think by car is a second-to-none choice. Las Vega is mostly famous for the colourful nightlife. This is a resort town located in the Mojave Desert in Nevada. The town has some specialties and during the night times, it looks best. The entire city is well decorated and illuminated. The most amazing feature of the city is the musical fountain. It is synchronised with music. Besides, the Strip is also another attractive issue at the town. The replicas like Eiffel Tower; Egyptian Pyramids etc. are also some adorable things here.

I am a student at Everest College and having an undergrad course in economics.

I have a group of six members in the college. We love to be together always like having a group study, moving for a theatre, joining at any ceremony and more. Sometimes we make some short trips in some less distant areas. Now we are planning to have a trip in Las Vegas. Though I went there for several times with my dad to meet my uncle who owns a small pub there, I did not have the chance to move on my own. Dad always was with me lest I get into any bar or pub and have a drink. In fact, my parents are conservative in some aspects.

I would like to go there by car because it is a long journey. Las Vegas is around 125 kilometres away from my home. Moving such a distance alone is not preferable for me. Go there with your good friends will be much better. If I become a victim of an accident, there is none to look after me on the highway to Vegas. Even there are some risks to move alone in the city until you are matured enough to protect yourself from any sudden invasion. Considering all the issues, I have decided to

make the trip with my friends. Moreover, it would be great fun for us. A wonderful sightseeing journey! All of us have visited the town but we lack the experience to stay at night there. So, I am going there on the car that will be driven by David.

I’d like to talk about Zalora group, one of the leading companies specializing in selling clothes.

It is an e-commerce company for online shopping purposes and provides a wide variety of style as well as current fashion trend for both men and women. The company has been through so many ups and downs that there was a time when they were on the edge of bankruptcy. At first, I didn’t care much about it, not until I came across an eye-catching dress when going shopping in the mega mall did I become interested in its products. What amazed me is that the price is much cheaper than other brands so I can get the best offer without asking for a bargain. Normally it would take me 3 days for the merchandise to be delivered but just only 2 days I could receive it. Another thing is that the refund policy of zalora is much better than Lazada which is its competitor. Customers can return unpleasing products within 10 days and get a brand new one with similar price so that’s the reason why zalora has great customer base than any competitors. Lately, the company has expanded its chain all over the place, therefore, customers no longer have to wait for delivered products and can enjoy great service from physical stores.

Starting from modest investment to a leading company that has highly profitable and thousands of employees coming from all over the world, zalora is an icon for lots of start-ups and youngsters running their own businesses.

Describe your favorite piece of clothing.

You should say:

Where you got it;

Do you often dress it;

When you wear it;

and explain why it is your favorite clothing.

Brief introduction

I’m not really that into clothes. I do try and look fairly smart but I’m not that bothered by my personal appearance and the clothes I’m wearing. But I will tell about my favorite article of clothing – my leather jacket. That is by some distance my favorite piece of clothing.

What it is and looks like

It’s a fairly normal or regular leather jacket. The one unusual feature I suppose is that it has white stripes down the sleeves. It’s also quite well-worn by now because I’ve had it some time and I tend to wear throughout the winter months. In fact it’s got quite a few little tears where it’s caught on sharp objects.

I still love it though and I don’t mind at all that it looks rather second-hand.

When I bought it

I bought it at least 5 years ago now. It came from one of those big department stores and not a specialist leather shop. My old coat was very shabby and I was told by my girlfriend that I definitely needed to buy another one – I think she was embarrassed to be seen with me.

Where I bought it

So I went out by myself. I think it must have been sometime in January when the New Year sales were on. My girlfriend wanted to come with me and help me choose something smart but I said I would do it by myself. We shop in very different ways. She always wants to try everything on and can spend hours buying nothing. My approach is quite different. If I see something that I like and it fits I buy it. She might be two hours in a shop while I normally only take 15 minutes.

Why I bought it

Anyway I saw this jacket and I thought that it looked really cool. I had always secretly wanted a leather jacket and because the sales were on and it was reduced by 50% I just bought it. My girlfriend was really shocked when she saw what I had

bought.

Why I like it

I like it because it’s different – it;’s just not like any other clothes I have in my wardrobe.

Describe a couple you know who have a happy marriage.

You should say:

Who they are;

How you knew them;

What they usually do together;

and explain how you feel about their marriage.

I have a lot of friends, and most of them are still young. However, there is

a couple, they both are my friends because we studied Chinese in the same class, and they got married four years ago. They are a very nice couple because they love and respect each other very much. Surprisingly, they both have active and dynamic characters. In my opinion, I think there is something very strange which is very hard to explain happening between them, for example, they always have the same ideas, opinion, and hobby. They especially like the same food and sport. Moreover, they never make decision without asking his/her partner opinion even a very small thing. In addition, when we have party, birthdays or weddings, they never participate separately. They always go by couple, in case a husband or wife can not go, the other will stay at home with his/her partner. As a result, they absolutely trust in each other. The husband always reserves the best for his wife, and his wife treats him respectfully. That is why I rarely see they have argument even a tiny argument.

I admire them very much; however, I usually tease them about their romantic and lovely marriage. They told me that the most important factor which is keeping their happy marriage is they always respect the partner ideas, opinion, and thinking. Now they have a daughter, and their happiness increases excessively. Their daughter resembles both father and mother closely, and she is so lovely as well. If I were them I would be very happy and proud of the marriage, I would try my best to preserve

my marriage because that is the most precious thing in my life. In my opinion, I think it is not easy to find an appropriate partner as we want like this couple. Not only I adore their marriage but all of my friends have the same attitude.

Next Year Marks the EU's 50th Anniversary of the Treaty A. After a period of introversion and stunned self-disbelief,continental European governments will recover their enthusiasm for pan-European institution-building in . Whether the European public will welcome a return to what voters in two countries had rejected so short a time before is another matter. B. There are several reasons for Europe’s recovering self-confidence. For years European economies had been lagging dismally behind America (to say nothing of Asia), but in the large continental economies had one of their best years for a decade, briefly outstripping America in terms of growth. Since land is generally prepared by hand, one ulupwa cannot take on a very large area; in this sense land has not been a limiting resource over large parts of the province. The situation has already changed near the main townships, and there has long been a scarcity of land for cultivation in the Valley. In these areas registered ownership patterns are becoming prevalent. B Most of the traditional cropping in Luapula, as n the Bemba area to the east, is based on citemene, a system whereby crops are grown on the ashes of tree branches. As a rule, entire trees are not felled, but are pollarded so that they can regenerate. Branches are cut over an area of varying size early in the dry season, and stacked to dry over a rough circle about a fifth to a tenth of the pollarded area. The wood is fired before the rains and in the first year planted with the African cereal finger millet (Eleusinecoracana). C During the second season, and possibly for afew seasons more the area is planted to variously mixed combinations of annuals such as maize,pumpkins (Telfiriaoccidentalis) and other cucurbits, sweet potatoes, groundnuts, Pharsalus beans and various leafy vegetables, grown with a certain amount of rotation. The diverse sequence ends with vegetable cassava, which is often planted into the developinglast-but-one crop as a relay. D Richards (1969) observed that the practice ofcitemene entails a definite division of labour between men and women. A man stakes out a plot in an unobtrusive manner, since it is considered

Selling Digital Music without Copy-protection Makes Sense A. It was uncharacteristically low-key for the industry’s greatest showman. But the essay published this week by Steve Jobs, the boss of Apple,on his firm’s website under the unassuming title “Thoughts on Music” has nonetheless provoked a vigorous debate about the future of digital music,which Apple dominates with its iPod music-player and iTunes music-store. At issue is “digital rights management” (DRM)—the technology guarding downloaded music against theft. Since there is no common standard for DRM, it also has the side-effect that songs purchased for one type of music-player may not work on another. Apple’s DRM system, called FairPlay, is the most widespread. So it came as a surprise when Mr. Jobs called for DRM for digital music to be abolished. B. This is a change of tack for Apple. It has come under fire from European regulators who claim that its refusal to license FairPlay to other firms has “locked in” customers. Since music from the iTunes store cannot be played on non-iPod music-players (at least not without a lot of fiddling), any iTunes buyer will be deterred from switching to a device made by a rival firm, such as Sony or Microsoft. When French lawmakers drafted a bill last year compelling Apple to open up FairPlay to rivals, the company warned of “state-sponsored piracy”. Only DRM, it implied, could keep the pirates at bay. C. This week Mr. Jobs gave another explanation for his former defence of DRM: the record companies made him do it. They would make their music available to the iTunes store only if Apple agreed to protect it using DRM. They can still withdraw their catalogues if the DRM system is compromised. Apple cannot license FairPlay to others, says Mr Jobs, because it would depend on them to produce security fixes promptly. All DRM does is restrict consumer choice and provide a barrier to entry, says Mr Jobs; without it there would be far more stores and players, and far more innovation. So, he suggests, why not do away with DRM and sell music unprotected?“This is

常见的比较关系词: 比较级:more/ less /adj-er than… 同级比较:as…as…/the same as…/equal/ like 试题中若出现以上比较关系词,需标记题中的比较对象(A 、B),并明确比较逻辑(如A比B更聪明),即可快速完成审题。如: 39. It is easier to find meaning in the field of science than in the field of art. 确定比较对象:A – field of science (科学领域)、B – field of art (艺术领域) 2.

具有隐含比较关系的表达: prefer to… compare to/compare with/contrast similar to…/similarly superior to/inferior to unusual 同样,考生在判定题干存在比较关系后,需标记题中的比较对象并明确比较逻辑。如: 35. Teachers say they prefer suggestopedia to traditional approaches to language teaching. – Test 1, Cambridge 7 1.确定比较对象:A –suggestopedia(暗示教学)、B –traditional approaches(传统教学方法) 2. 题干中A、B存在比较关系但原文A、B不存在比较关系时,答案应为未提及——NOT GIVEN。

Climate and Country Wealth Why are some countries stupendously rich and others horrendously poor? Social theorists have been captivated by this question since the late 18th century, when Scottish economist Adam Smith argued in his magisterial work The Wealth of Nations that the best prescription for prosperity is a free-market economy in which the government allows businesses substantial freedom to pursue profits. Smith, however, made a second notable hypothesis: that the physical geography of a region can influence its economic performance. He contended that the economies of coastal regions, with their easy access to sea trade, usually outperform the economies of inland areas. Coastal regions and those near navigable waterways are indeed far richer and more densely settled than interior regions, just as Smith predicted. Moreover, an area's climate can also affect its economic development. Nations in tropical climate zones generally face higher rates of infectious disease and lower agricultural productivity (especially for staple foods) than do nations in temperate zones. Similar burdens apply to the desert zones. The very poorest regions in the world are those saddled with both handicaps: distance from sea trade and a tropical or desert ecology. The basic lessons of geography are worth repeating, because most economists have ignored them. In the past decade the vast majority of papers on economic development have neglected even the most obvious geographical realities. The best single indicator of prosperity is gross national product (GNP) per capita – the total value of a country's economic output, divided by its population. A map showing the world distribution of GNP per capita immediately reveals the vast gap between rich and poor nations. The great majority of the poorest countries lie in the geographical tropics. In contrast, most of the richest countries lie in the temperate zones. Among the 28 economies categorized as high income by the World Bank, only Hong Kong, Singapore and part of T aiwan are in the tropical zone, representing a mere 2 percent of the combined population of the high-income regions. Almost all the temperate-zone countries have either high-income economies (as in the cases of North America, western Europe, Korea and Japan) or middle-income economies (as in the cases of eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union and China). In addition, there is a strong temperate-tropical divide within countries that straddle both types of climates. Most of Brazil, for example, lies within the tropical zone, but the richest part of the nation – the southernmost states –is in the temperate zone. There are two major ways in which a region’s climate affects economic development. First, it affects the prevalence of disease. Many kinds of infectious diseases are endemic to the tropical and subtropical zones. This tends to be true of diseases in which the pathogen spends part of its life cycle outside the human host: for instance, malaria (carried by mosquitoes) and helminthic infections (caused by parasitic worms). Although epidemics of malaria have occurred sporadically as far north as Boston in the past century, the disease has never gained a lasting foothold in the temperate zones, because the cold winters naturally control the mosquito-based

Next Year Marks the EU's 50th Anniversary of the Treaty A. After a period of introversion and stunned self-disbelief, continental European governments will recover their enthusiasm for pan-European institution-building in 2007. Whether the European public will welcome a return to what voters in two countries had rejected so short a time before is another matter. B. There are several reasons for Europe’s recovering self-confidence. For years European economies had been lagging dismally behind America (to say nothing of Asia), but in 2006 the large continental economies had one of their best years for a decade, briefly outstripping America in terms of growth. Since politics often reacts to economic change with a lag, 2006’s improvement in economic growth will have its impact in 2007, though the recovery may be ebbing by then. C.
