WHAT do you want to be in the future? A scientist? A doctor? But do you really know what these jobs are like?

For some students in Texas, US, this is not a problem. They took part in a careers fair (职业博览会) on Oct 25 and learned about some jobs there.

More than 2,500 students took part in the fair, and 81 companies were there too. Students walked from stall (展台) to stall and carried

bags full of information.

Aubrey Harvey, 13, said she liked the fair because it got her

out of the classroom for a day. She also had the chance to learn

about jobs she hadn’t hea rd of before.

“I learned that being a hygienist (保健专家) you get to

she told a local newspaper, The Eagle.

Tristan Padia, 13, learned how to save a person from

WHAT are the hottest buzzwords (流行词) in China right now?

What are the differences between the words used by men and

women on the Internet? A new report on Chinese language use last

year has answered these questions.

The report was released by the Ministry of Education on May

29. The report was based on a survey of 201,488 entries (词目) by

1,728 blog (博客) users last year.

It listed the top 10 hottest buzzwords, including “house purchasing quota (限购)”,“school bus” and “plasticizing agent (塑

化剂)”.

“House purchasing quota” is a policy by the government to

control (调控) house prices in some big cities, such as Beijing and Shanghai. “School bus” got many people’s attention because there

were some school bus accidents earlier this year. In April the State Council (国务院) set new rules about school bus safety. “Plasticizing agent” is something that was found in some foods. Experts believe it

hurts people’s health.

Hou Min, a professor at Communication University of China,

said that the change of buzzwords shows real changes in Chinese society. For example, people talked about the words “plasticizing agent” a lot because they worried about food safety last year.

According to the report, the 10 most used nouns by male bloggers were “society”, “government”, “politics” and “problem”, while female bloggers more commonly typed “men”, “love”, “friend”, “children” and “star”.

“Chinese men think more about politics and society when blogging online, while women focus on love, life and entertainment (娱乐),” said Tian Lixin, deputy director-general of the Language and Information Department of the Ministry of Education.

Passage 4

Whenever Pinocchio, the puppet in the Disney cartoon film,

tells a lie, his nose grows longer. You may think it’s just a s tory to

warn kids, but a new study shows your nose does give you away

when you tell a lie.

If a person is lying, his or her nose will change, not in length

(长度), but in temperature. Scientists at the University of Grenada, Spain are calling it the “Pinocchio effect”. The temperature of your nose rises when you tell a lie, according to

the magazine Pop Science.

The scientists use a technology called thermography (热成

像) to see these changes. They took infrared (红外线的) pictures with a special camera that can show the temperature changes. The “Pinocchio effect” is a change in body temperature related (有关系的) to feelings.

When we lie about our feelings, the temperature around our noses rises. This is because a part of the brain called the insula (脑岛) is activated (使活动). This part controls both feelings and body temperature. It only activates when we have real feelings. The scientists found when the insula is activated, our body temperature rises, especially the nose. They also found the feeling of anxiety (焦虑) makes our face temperature rise. But when we do difficult mental (脑力的) work, our face temperature drops.

Besides feelings, thermography can also spot a drunk (醉鬼). Scientists at the University of Patras, Greece took infrared pictures of faces of drunken people. They found that for drunken people, the nose and mouth are hotter than other parts of the face.
