From writers to scientists, here are the amazing stories of women you may not know about, but certainly should.

Murasaki Shikibu

You may be familiar with lots of novels by male writers, from Mark Twain to Charles Dickens. But their works may not even have existed if it hadn’t been for Murasaki Shikibu, a Japanese woman widely considered to be the world’s first novelist. In addition to a two-part novel called The Tale of Genji, Shikibu also wrote a book of poems.

Maria Sibylla Merian

Today, children as young as preschool age can happily explain how a caterpillar (毛虫) turns into a butterfly. But there was a time when no one knew this — not even scientists. Until the 1670s, scientists thought that caterpillars and butterflies were two totally different creatures. Thanks to Maria Sibylla Merian, we know the truth about these beautiful insects.

Ada Lovelace

Ada Lovelace, born in 1815, was the daughter of famous British poet Lord Byron, but she wasn’t a poet herself. She was the world’s first computer programmer. Lovelace’s mathematical(数学的) talent was obvious at a young age and caught the attention of Charles

Babbage. Babbage designed the early computing machine that he hoped would be able to quickly solve math problems. In addition to helping Babbage design the early computer program, Lovelace was also the first to recognize that the machine might be able to do more than calculation.

Tu Youyou

Tu Youyou, born in 1930, became the first Chinese scientist to win the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. In the 1970s, Tu worked to find a way to prevent the spread of malaria (疟疾). She discovered artemisinin(青蒿素), which is used in life-saving, malaria-fighting drugs around the world today.

After giving a talk at a high school, I was asked to pay a visit to a special student. An illness had kept the boy home, but he had expressed an interest in meeting me, and it would mean a great deal to him. I agreed.

During the nine-mile drive to his home, I found out something about Matthew. He had muscular dystrophy(肌肉萎缩症). When he was born, the doctor told his parents that he would not live to see five, and then they were told he would not make it to ten. Now he was thirteen. He wanted to meet me because I was a gold-medal power lifter, and I knew about overcoming obstacles (障碍) and going for my dreams.

I spent over an hour talking to Matthew. Never once did he complain or ask, “Why me?” He spoke about winning and succeeding and going for his dreams. Obviously, he knew what he was talking about. He didn’t mention that his classmates had made fun of him because he was different. He just talked about his hopes for the future, and how one day he wanted to lift weight with me.

When we finished talking, I went to my briefcase and pulled out the first gold medal I won and put it around his neck. I told him he was more of a winner and knew more about success and overcoming obstacles than I ever would. He looked at it for a moment, then took it off and handed it back to me. He said, “You are a champion. You earned that medal. Someday when I get to the Olympics and win my own medal, I will show it to you.”

Last summer I received a letter from Matthew’s parents telling me that Matthew had passed away. They wanted me to have a letter he had written to me a few days before:

Dear Rick,

My mom said I should send you a thank-you letter for the picture you sent me. I also want to let you know that the doctors tell me that I don’t have long to live anymor e. But I still smile as much as I can.

I told you someday I was going to the Olympics and win a gold medal. But I know now I will never get to do that. But I know I’m a champion, and God knows that too. When I get to Heaven, God will give me my medal and when you get there, I will show it to you. Thank you for loving me.

Your friend,

Mathew

A walker seriously injured in a mountain-top lightning strike which killed two others is showing signs of improvement, the police have said. A major rescue operation was performed on Sunday following two strikes which hit the Brecon Beacons, South Wales. Two men died, while two others were taken to hospital.

A police spokeswoman said, “A man in a serious condition in hospital, following simultaneous(同时发生的) incidents in the Brecon Beacons, has now improved and he is recovering. The organisation’s delivery officer, Elly Hannigan Popp, said, “We’d advise everyone to check the weather forecast before starting a walk. If you hear thunder, see lightning or if your hair stands on end, postpone activities even if the sky looks blue and clear. Lightning will strike as far as 10 miles away from any rainfall. Lightning can strike the same place repeatedly —especially tall, pointed, isolated objects.”

“If there is no shelter you should keep moving. And if you become the tallest object, crouch(蹲) in the open twice as far away from the nearest pointed object as it is tall. Make yourself as small as possible, stay on your toes and keep your heels together, as it will allow electricity to go up one foot, through the heels and back i nto the ground through the other.”

People who experience face blindness can have a hard time in their social life. They have trouble remembering or recognizing faces. The term ‘face blindness’ isn’t exactly accurate though. 66 . They just can’t put all the parts together into one coherent image that they remember and recognize when they see it again, which is why proper name for face blindness is prosopagnosia, or literally “not knowing the face”.

67 These clues include the way they sound (their voice or accent), the way they look (body size, shape or height), the way they smell, their clothing, their hair(style, colour or length) and obvious features on their face(beards, piercings

heavy eyebrow, glasses).

68 Because they’re not always unique to one person and they can change. This is why face blindness can cause so much stress.

If you don’t experience face blindness, you’ve probably never given much thought to your ability to recognize familiar people or how important that is to your social interactions and feelings of safety. But imagine if you didn’t know whether the person approaching you is a friend or a stranger. 69 . Or imagine not being able to find the teacher when you need to use the toilet, because your teacher wears glasses and none of the adults in the room are wearing glasses today. 70 .

A. These are important ways to remember someone’s face.

B. Do you say hello or just keep on walking?

C. Those with face blindness have to use other clues to recognize people.

D. It’s easy to see the effect this would have on your social skills and confidence.

E. These are much less effective ways to recognize someone.

F. There are tests you can take to get an idea about your face-recognizing abilities.

G. They actually can see faces.

A good habit, a successful life

A habit is something that you do often or regularly almost without thinking, especially something that is hard to stop doing.

Developing good habits of learning is necessary for us. First of all, we should concentrate our attention in class, which will help us better understand what teachers say. Also, we are supposed to make the best of the time for independent study, which can improve our ability to learn by ourselves. Finally, we are encouraged to finish homework alone.

At the same time, good habits of living are also good for our life. Healthy eating along with regular exercise is probably the only way to become fit. What is more, a good amount of sleep every night is also important for our health, for it makes us feel energetic and well prepared for the day to come.

Part I Reading Comprehension (10×4 = 40) Passage One Television has opened windows in everybody's life. Young men will never again go to war as they did in 1914. Millions of people now have seen the effects of a battle. And the result has been a general dislike of war, and perhaps more interest in helping those who suffer from all the terrible things that have been shown on the screen. Television has also changed politics. The most distant areas can now follow state affairs, see and her the politicians before tan election. Better informed, people are more likely to vote, and so to make their opinion count. Unfortunately, television's influence has been extremely harmful to the young. Children do not have enough experience to realize that TV shows present an unreal world; that TV advertisements lie to sell products that are sometimes bad or useless. They believe that the violence they see is normal and acceptable. All educators agree that the "television generations" are more violent than their parents and grandparents. Also, the young are less patient. Used to TV shows, where everything is quick and interesting, they do not have the patience to read an article without pictures; to read a book that requires thinking; to listen to a teacher who doesn't do funny things like the people on children's programs.
