1.Exercise 1: Listen to this passage and decide whether the following statements are true or false, write T for true and F for false.

Airport Security Screens Passengers Using New Technology

Checking baggage for explosives hasn't been a problem. Airport

security can put bags in x-ray machines, open them up to look

inside, or use advanced machinery that that check traces of

chemicals often used in explosives.

But checking people's bodies isn't so easy. A TSA initiative

that began last September to rigorously frisk more people led to

dozens of sexual harassment complaints. So the TSA turned to

technology installing what looks like a longer, more complex

walk-through metal detectors in nine airports around the country.

Jose Ralls is the TSA director from McCarran International in Las Vegas.

Jose Ralls: The machine actually will talk to the individual,

telling them to stand inside and wait, and as soon as they are

cleared, it will tell them to proceed.

From a distance, Mr. Ralls watches one airport passenger go through the process.

Jose Ralls: Now he knows to go on through, and he just waits, and as soon as the air is analyzed he will be allowed to proceed

forward.

The machine blasts air downward and across whoever inside the

portal. Mr. Ralls says that often startles people.

Jose Ralls: That's why our focus out there is to explain to

them what will be taking place, the noise that they will be hearing.

The way it's supposed to work is that suspicious particles on

clothing and exposed skin are blasted towards the floor -- where,

within seven seconds, the machine can detect 40 types of

explosives. If any are found, security is alerted.

According to the manufacturer, Smith Detection, the portals also have less than 1% error rate. Company vice president Mark

Lastra says this technology is commonly used elsewhere.

Smith Detection: Mostly highly controlled facilities,

sensitive security, such as nuclear power plants and government

buildings with high security needs.

Along with increasing security, the TSA hopes to cut down on passenger wait times. It is collecting data from the airports in

this test base to see if the machines are faster and more

efficient than human inspectors.

The Transportation Security Administration plans to deploy

five more of these portals elsewhere in the nation by late spring.

Eventually it would like the explosive detectors to be as common

as metal detectors.

Computer Simulations Might Predict Future Earthquakes

Geologists say they knew a larger earthquake was coming in

South Asia, but they did not know when.

The Himalayan Mountains were formed some 150 million years ago after the landmass that is now India broke off from Antarctica,

drifted north and collided with the rest of Asia.

Scientists say the South Asian land mass is still moving

towards North Asia at the rate of about two centimeters a year,

making the area prone to earthquakes.

Harley Benz is a researcher at the U.S. Geological Survey

earthquake information center.

Harley Benz: It's a broad zone of deformation, and across this

zone that extends 1,000 kilometers, you have a whole series of

faults and folds.

Another earthquake-prone region is along the 1300 kilometer

San Andreas Fault in California.

It is here that John Rundle, a physics and engineering

professor at the University of California at Davis, is testing his

earthquake computer simulation.

John Rundle: You take these simulations, you turn them on, you run them and you do as good a job as possible in simulating or

representing the past history of activity on the fault systems.

Dr. Rundle uses information from tools such as global

positioning satellites to create a virtual reality model of

thousands of years of earthquake activity along the San Andreas

Fault. He says that in the future, this computer model may be able

to predict some earthquakes just as hurricane paths are now

forecast.

John Rundle: Our goal is to be able to make forecasts on that

kind of time scale and then to improve it to the point where we're

actually able to see the preparation process in the months and

year or two leading up to a large earthquake.

Dr. Rundle says that several decades from now, one third of

the world's population could live in seismically active regions.

He hopes that by then, the virtual reality software will help

prevent the heavy loss of life caused by tragedies such as the

South Asia earthquake.

1993 Package Holidays Package holidays, covering a two weeks' stay in an attractive place, are increasingly popular. Once you get to the airport, it is up to the tour operator to see that you get safely to your destination.Everything is laid on for you. There is, in fact, no reason for you to bother to arrange anything yourselves. You make friends and have a good time. But there is very little chance that you will really get to know the local people. This is even less likely on a coach tour, when you spend almost your entire time traveling.Of course, there are carefully planned stops for you to visit historic buildings and monuments. You may visit the beautiful, the historic, the ancient. But time is always short. There is also the added disadvantage of being obliged to spend you holiday with a group of people you have never met before. (1994) The American Family The American family unit is changing. There used to be mainly two types of families, the extended and the nuclear. The former included mother, father, children, and some other relatives such as grandparents, living in the same house or nearby. Then as the economy progressed from agricultural to industrial, people began moving to different parts of the country in order to search for job opportunities. These moves split up the extended family. The nuclear family consisting of only parents and children has therefore become far more wide spread. Today’s family, however, can be composed of diverse co mbinations. With the divorce rate nearly one in two, there's an increase in single-parent homes—a father or mother living with one or more children. Blended families occur when divorced men and women remarry and combine the children from former marriages into a new family. On the other hand, there is an increase in childless couples while one in rive Americans lives alone. (1995) Unidentified Flying Objects There are many explanations for why UFOs visit the Earth. / The most popular one is that they maybe visitors from other planets./ To fly such aircraft, their builders must develop different forms of aviation,/because they seem to fly much faster than normal aircraft./ The UFOs, it is believed, must contain scientists/ from other planets who are studying life on earth./ It is even believed that several such aircraft may have landed on earth/ and the space visitors may be living amongst us./ But there are also less fantastic explanations available./ Although some sightings of UFOs are difficult to explain, most can be explained quite easily./ In many cases the observers might have made a mistake./ They might have seen a weather balloon or an aircraft./ Or the light they saw in the sky might have been light from the ground,/ reflected on to the clouds./ However, the exact cause of many sightings still remained a mystery.

因此在听多位数的数字时,应对billion(十亿)、million(百万)、thousand(千)、hundred(百)等词尤为重视。同时,要注意一个数字的多种读法,如播音员把两个足球队比赛结果2:0读作two to nothing而不是读成two to nought或two to zero.

A.倒金字塔结构(the Inverted Pyramid Form) 也称倒叙法。 听新闻要抓住6要素,即who,what,why,when,where,how,一般情况下导语 中应当回答这6要素的2要素。 Eg. American Coast Guard officials in Florida say they have returned to Cuba a group of would-be migrants B.含定语从句的复合句 此类句型通常结构复杂,信息量大,是新闻听力的难点。 Eg: they had to remain at the abandoned base where there were only flour and cooking fat.

如2008年21题: what happened during the new year celebration in thailand? a.terrorists fought with government troops. b.thai troops killed terrorists. c.there were shootings. d.there were explosions. 分析:先找出题目中的关键词new year celebration和thailand,再找出包含题目及答案的句子the new year celebrations in thailand were shattered by violence when 9 bombs exploded across bangkok around midnight.

1.Exercise 1: Listen to this passage and decide whether the following statements are true or false, write T for true and F for false. Airport Security Screens Passengers Using New Technology Checking baggage for explosives hasn't been a problem. Airport security can put bags in x-ray machines, open them up to look inside, or use advanced machinery that that check traces of chemicals often used in explosives. But checking people's bodies isn't so easy. A TSA initiative that began last September to rigorously frisk more people led to dozens of sexual harassment complaints. So the TSA turned to technology installing what looks like a longer, more complex walk-through metal detectors in nine airports around the country. Jose Ralls is the TSA director from McCarran International in Las Vegas. Jose Ralls: The machine actually will talk to the individual, telling them to stand inside and wait, and as soon as they are cleared, it will tell them to proceed. From a distance, Mr. Ralls watches one airport passenger go through the process. Jose Ralls: Now he knows to go on through, and he just waits, and as soon as the air is analyzed he will be allowed to proceed forward. The machine blasts air downward and across whoever inside the portal. Mr. Ralls says that often startles people. Jose Ralls: That's why our focus out there is to explain to them what will be taking place, the noise that they will be hearing. The way it's supposed to work is that suspicious particles on
