Haad Farang (Haad Sai Yao), KohMuk

This small but striking bay in Thailand has waters free from riptides(激流), making it safe for families to play water in the sun. As its nickname implies—Farang is Thai for foreigners—you'll find a large concentration of backpackers here. Still, with only a couple of simple food shops, it's a far cry from the noises of Chaweng beach on Koh Samui or Kamala on Phuket, which makes it to be one of the top tourist destinations.

Rent a sea kayak(皮划艇)(100 baht, which is around£2 an hour) and go around the corner to Tham Morakot (the Emerald Cave), a winding cave that opens up to a bay walled by thick leaves and often visited by groups of monkeys. It is very inspiring, but to fully appreciate it, be sure to prepare a light to avoid knocking into cave walls and other kayaks. To avoid being crowded, make the trip in the late afternoon.

Where to eat

The Ko Yao Viewpoint Hotel is the best place for tourists. Drink the sweet cocktails in favour of an icy Chang beer and sit in the last rays of the day.Where to stay

Cheaper hotels of comparable quality are set slightly back in the forest, but if you want beachfront access, it's worth choosing one of the basic hotels at Koh Mook Charlie Beach Resort (bungalows from£32).

Getting there

Fly from Bangkok to Trang with Air Asia (from£30), then take a one-hour Tigerline ship from Hat Yao Pier (£19). Besides, a five-hour ship from Phuket at Rassada Pier(£41) goes directly to the island and will drop passengers at Haad Farang.

For more information and service, please click here.

D. Its quiet environment.

22.What can we infer about the Tham Morakot?

A. It has winding rivers suitable for boating.

D. There are fewer people in the late afternoon.

23.Which of the following is the advantage of the hotels back in the forest?

A. They are near the sea.

B. They are not expensive.

C. It's very quiet there.

D. It's of high quality there.

24.Where is the text most probably taken from?

B

In recent years, China has witnessed the growth of luxury (奢侈品) brands. In this market, Chinese consumers are now the largest spenders. It’s clear that a new generation of young, materialistic people is increasingly relying on luxury brands to improve its self-image.

I am a fashionist too, at least in spirit---I love to look at clothes and shoes. But I don’t understand why people spend lots of money on designer labels.

When a young woman buys a handbag that costs two months of her salary, that’s a scary thing.

What’s interesting is that scientists have found that having luxury things doesn’t lead

to happiness.

Study after study has shown that although we want material things, when we get them we don’t suddenly become “happy” people. In fact, a se ries of studies by Leaf Van Boven at the University of Colorado, US, has shown that individuals who spend money on travel and similar experiences get more pleasure than those who invest it in material things. That’s because experiences are more easily integrated into a person’s identity. If I travel to Yunnan, that adventure affects how I think in the future. My memories become a part of me.

Moreover, as Van Boven has observed, young people who pursue happiness through “things” are liked less by their pe ers. People prefer those who pursue happiness through experiences.

It’s natural to want to express yourself through your appearance. So my advice is: create a look that isn’t tied to a designer label. Convey your own message. Take some lessons from the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. He was always in Levis jeans and a black turtleneck. Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, routinely appears in hoodies and sneakers. These people, successful people, have style. You don’t have to break the bank to send a message about who you are.

Take a trip. Go out into the world. Then come back and confidently create your own signature look.

25. What can we infer from the first three paragraphs?

A. The author enjoys buying luxury brands herself.

B. The author agrees to spend money on material things.

C. The author is critical of youths tying their looks to designer labels.

D. The author finds it natural for fashionists to follow fashion trends.

26. Leaf Van Boven’s studies showed that ______.

A. traveling changes a person’s identity greatly

B. people dislike those who love luxuries

C. experiences can bring people more happiness than luxuries

D. luxuries have a negative effect on people’s happiness

27. What is the a uthor’s advice on expressing oneself?

A. Be selective about designer labels.

B. Create your own personal unique style.

C. Choose styles that are simple and comfortable.

D. Try styles like Mark Zuckerberg’s.28. The main purpose of the article is to ______.

A. persuade readers to invest in experiences instead of luxuries

B. prove how luxury leads to an unpleasant life

C. tell how to express yourself through appearances

D. report on a series of studies about luxuries and happiness

C

John H. Johnson was born in a black family in Arkansas city in 1918. His father died in an accident when John was six. He was reaching the high school age, but his hometown offered no high school for blacks.

Fortunately, he had a strong-willed caring mother. John remembered that his mother told him many times, “Son, you can be anything you want really to be if you just believe.”She told him not to depend on others, including his mother. “You have to earn success, ”she said. “All the people who work hard don't su cceed, but the only people who do succeed are those who work hard.”

These words came from a woman with less than a third grade education. She also knew that believing and hard work don't mean everything. So she worked hard as a cook for two years to save enough to take her son, who was then 15, to Chicago.

Chicago in 1933 was not the promised land that black southerners were looking for. John's mother and stepfather could not find work. But here John could go to school, and here he learned the power of words—as an editor of the newspaper and yearbook at Du Sable High School. His wish was to publish a magazine for blacks.

While others discouraged him, John’s mother offered him more words to live by.“Nothing beats a failure but a try. ” She also let him pawn(典当)her furniture to get the $ 500 he needed to start the Negro magazine.

It is natural that difficulties and failures followed John closely until he became very successful. He always keeps his mother’s words in mind.“Son, failure is not in your vocabulary!”

Now John H. Johnson is one of the 400 richest people in America—worth $ 150 million.

29. John’s mother decided to move to Chicago because ________.

A. his father died when John was very young

B. life was too hard for them to stay on in their hometown

C. John needed more education badly

D. there were no schools for Negroes in their hometown

30. John’s mother ________.

A. didn’t believe in or depend on others

B. thought one could be whatever one wanted to be

C. believed one would succeed without working hard

D. thought no one could succeed without working hard

31. The story mainly tells us ________.

A. how John H. Johnson became successful

B. about the mental support John’s mother gave him

C. about the importance of a good education

D. about the key to success for blacks

Why do zebras have stripes? This question has been stumping both animal experts and zebra fans all over the world for centuries. But now it appears that some researchers in California may have finally solved the age-old mystery!

Over the years, there have been many theories---Some believed that it was purely accidental and caused by interbreeding (杂交), while others thought it was to confuse predators(食肉动物). Then there were the speculations that the stripes probably helped with camouflage (伪装), keeping the animals cool in the blazing African sun and last but not least, scaring away the troubling flies that always seem to be around. But no one had ever tried to prove any of the theories, with scientific research.

Determined to solve this age-old mystery, a team of scientists led by, Tim Caro, professor of Wildlife Biology at the University of California, Davis, set to work. They began by comparing the thickness, location, and the stripes on seven species of zebras that live in various geographic locations. They then examined what forces of nature, each one had to battle-ranging from natural predators to temperature to the small insects like flies, which they may be constantly subjected to. To their amazement, the only factor that connected with the stripes was the biting flies. The zebras with the most prominent (突出的) and largest number of stripes, mostly inhabited areas with more flies.

But that led to another question : why are zebras the only one smart enough to develop the stripes? After all, there are plenty of other animals like horses and donkeys, which are subjected to the same trouble. Upon closer examination of the black and white animals, the researchers noticed that unlike the others, zebras have very short coats of hair, making them particularly susceptible (易受影响的) to getting bitten by the flies!

While Tim, who published his findings in the online journal, Nature Communications, on April 1st, says that this mystery is finally solved, it has given rise to a new one. Why are these fearless flies who have no qualms(不安) attacking animals that are thousand of times bigger, afraid of black and white stripes? If you have any theories, be sure to add it to the comments below. It may help the professor with his next question !

32.What does the underlined word “stumping” in the first paragraph most probably mean?

A. Surprised.

B. Excited.

C. Puzzled.

D. Disappointed.

33. What does the second paragraph mainly tell us?

A. People have different ideas about why zebras have stripes.

B. Zebras’ stripes are used to confuse predators.

C. Experts are trying to prove the ideas with scientific research.

D. The stripes of zebras are the result of interbreeding.

34. What surprised the scientists was that _______.

A. the stripes have something to do with biting flies.

B. zebras live where there are more flies

C. the stripes are determined by the location

D. stripes vary depending on zebras’ species

35. Why are zebras easy to bite by flies?

A. Because their stripes stand out.

B. Because their hair is short.

C. Because their colors appeal to flies.

D. Because they can’t defend themselves.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Everyone can benefit from making an effort to practice gratitude (感激) every day. The following three steps can help you start feeling more grateful, and appreciative of the good things in your life.

Notice the Good Things in Your Life

36 Pay attention to the small everyday details of your life -nature, people, community, shelter, creature comforts like a warm bed or a good meal. And then start a gratitude journal. Making a commitment to writing down good things each day makes it

more likely that we will notice good things as they happen.

37

There are moments when you naturally, right then and there, feel filled with gratitude. These are moments when you say to yoursel f, “Oh, wow, this is amazing!” or “How great this is!” Pause, notice and absorb that feeling of true gratitude. Let it sink in. Enjoy your blessings in the moment they happen.

Express Gratitude

Expressing gratitude is more than being polite. 38 Show your appreciation to someone who really did something nice. Say: “It was really kind of you to...,” “You did me a big favor when ...,” or “Thank you for being there when ...”. 39 Hold the door open for the person behind you, even if it means waiting a little longer than you normally would.

True gratitude doesn’t leave you feeling like you owe other people something -after all, if you’ve done someone a favor, you probably don’t want the person to feel like you expect something back in return. 40

A. You can also express gratitude by doing a kindness.

B. It’s all about feeling good and creating a cycle of good.

C. It’s about showing your heartfelt appreciation.

D. Enjoy the Feeling of Gratitude.

E. Help someone without letting the person find out it was you.

F. Start to notice and identify the things you are grateful for.

G. It’s amazing what you notice when you focus on feeling grateful.
