Listening Scripts for Review and Test (4)

Part II Listening Comprehension

Section A:

Directions: In this section, you will hear three news reports. At the end of each news report, you will hear two or three questions. Both the news report and the questions will be spoken only once. After you hear a question, you must choose the best answer from the four choices marked A), B), C) and D. Then write the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 1.

News Report One

A trial is going on right now that’s closely being watched by companies and legal experts around America. AT&T is trying to buy Time Warner, the parent company of CNN, for more than $85 billion.

Today, AT&T is a large wireless company and satellite TV distributor. But what it does not have is content programming and entertainment. The merger would be one of the biggest media deals in history, but the U.S. government is trying to block it and one big question is, will the merger break U.S. antitrust laws, which are designed to keep American companies from having too much control over the market.

It’s not just AT&T and Time Warner who care about the outcome of this case. All the media companies considering mergers like Disney and 21st Century Fox are watching carefully.

If the Justice Department succeeds in blocking the merger, some see signals of a new era of government scrutiny. That might stop some future deals from going forward.

Questions 1 and 2 are based on the news report you have just heard.

1.Why does the AT&T company want to merge Time Wanner?

2.Which of the following statements is true?

News Report Two

A majority of Americans, 84 percent, want the government to require nutrition labels on food packaging even if they may not want to read them. This according to a new Reuters/Ipsos Opinion Poll, which found only 13 percent said they "always" read the nutrition facts when deciding what to buy.

Many poll respondents were interested in sugar, calories, salt and fat content. Fewer than half of those surveyed said they would be willing to pay more for foods that are organic, grass-fed or contain no added sugars or genetically-engineered ingredients. There is something they would shell out for: Locally-grown food. 57 percent said they would consider paying more for it.

Lilian Woo, FOX News.

Questions 3 and 4 are based on the news report you have just heard.

3.What did most Americans want to have on food packaging?

4.According to the poll, how many people are willing to pay more for organic food? News Report Three

The Golden Gate Bridge joins the beautiful city of San Francisco with the suburbs to the north. Each day about one hundred thousand automobiles cross the bridge taking people to and from the city. More than half of them cross the bridge during the morning and evening rush hours. With the traffic so heavy, the trip is not pleasant. Now, however, there lives one group of happy commuters. They go to work by boat and enjoy it so much that most of them say they will never go by car again. The ferry they take is spacious, quiet and comfortable. The trip takes only 30 minutes and it’s not very costly. But best of all, being on the boat seems to make people more friendly toward each other. Because the ferry has been so successful, there are plans to use other still larger boats. There is also a proposal for a high speed boat that makes the trip in only 15 minutes. But not everyone is happy about that. A lot of people feel that half an hour is just enough time to relax.

Questions 5 to 7 are based on the news report you have just heard.

5.How do the commuters feel about crossing the Golden Gate Bridge by car?

6.What does the speaker say about ferry commuters?

7.How do commuters respond to plans for the future of the ferry?

Section B

Directions: In this section, you will hear two long conversations. At the end of each conversation, you will hear four questions. Both the conversation and the questions will be spoken only once. After you hear a question, you must choose the best answer from the four choices marked A), B), C) and D). Then write the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 1.

Now you will hear two long conversations.

Conversation One

W: Hey, Tom. How is your literature presentation going?

M: What literature presentation? I don't have to give mine until the end of the next week.

W: You mean you haven't even started working on it yet?

M: No. I need the pressure of a deadline to get inspired.

W: Really? I'm quite the opposite. I can't concentrate unless I know I have plenty of time. Besides I have a big math test next week. So I want to get my presentation out of the way.

M: What's your presentation on?

W: T. S Eliot.

M: Wasn't he a poet? I thought we were supposed to focus on a novel.

W: He wrote novels, do you know?

M: Oh. Really? I never knew that. I guess I'll learn more on Tuesday. Is that when you are supposed to talk?

W: Uh-huh. But I was going to offer you a preview. I'm looking for someone to tell me whether I'm talking too fast and whether you can follow what I'm saying.

M: I guess I could do that. When were you thinking of?

W: Will this afternoon be all right? I have a class to go to now but I'll be around before dinner.

M: That sounds good. I'll stop by your room. It's probably quieter there than in my hall.

Questions 8 to 11 are based on the conversation you have just heard.

8.What are they talking about?

9.Why does the woman want to get her presentation finished?

10.What do you know about T. S Eliot?

11.When will the woman make the presentation?

Conversation Two

M: What are you going to have?

W: I have no idea. Could you help me with the menu?

M: Yes, sure. These are starters, and there are main courses and these are desserts.

See?

W: W hat’s the alternative?

M: The alternative is to order a complete dinner. For a set price you get choice of soup or juice, one dish with potato and vegetable, salad, bread and butter and sometimes coffee and sometimes dessert.

W: A nd you pay the price listed next to the main course?

M: Right. Like the roast beef dinner is $7.85—plus tax and tip, of course.

W: I t all looks pretty expensive to me.

M: It’s not. This is only a bit more expensive than McDonald’s.So enjoy yourself.

We’re celebrating, remember? Order anything you’d like to try; it’s all on me. W: Y ou are very kind.

M: Friends are friends. I don’t get promoted often. Are you ready to order?

W: A h, can you tell me what the Hot Fudge Sundae is?

M: That’s a dessert. It’s an English specialty. It’s a kind of ice cream with a hot sticky sauce over the top—very sweet and fattening!

W: I don’t really like the sound of that. How come there is English food? I thought we agreed to eat American food.

M: Our country is made up of people from all over the world, so besides collected words and phrases from every language, we’ve also absorbed recipes. We even have a lot of Chinese restaurants now.

W: W hich is better, French or Chinese cuisine?

M: I’d say it’s a toss-up. I love them both.

W: I didn’t know you were so fond of foreign foods. When my boss promotes me, I will take you to a French restaurant near my company. The food there is delicious. M: Oh, we will have a second dinner soon.

Questions 12 to 15 are based on the conversation you have just heard.

12.What is the relationship between the two speakers?

After you hear a question, you must choose the best answer from the four choices marked A), B), C) and D). Then write the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet 1.

Passage One

Welcome to the class. Since this is a composition class, I expect my students to follow certain rules of formality. So, I count off points for various kinds of mistakes. A misspelled word will cost you 5 points. You’ve lost 25 points if you’ve misspelled five words. If you write incomplete sentences, you’ve lost 10 points. If you give me two complete sentences as one without adequate punctuation, you’ve lost 15 points. I do not accept late papers. You will receive a zero for any theme which you fail to submit on time. I expect you to read each assignment. I will give you a short unannounced quiz from time to time. This class meets on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. If you have any questions at anytime, you can see me on Tuesdays. My office is on the second floor of this building. Your assignment for Wednesday is to read Hemin gway’s short story on page 55. Friday will be the last class day of this week, so you can expect to write a short in-class theme for me then. That’s all for today, I’ll see you on Wednesday.

16.How many points will a student lose if he writes incomplete sentences in a

composition?

17.What’s the assignment for Wednesday?

18.What day is today?

Passage Two

On 15th, Feb, 2016, an instant survey was carried out among 18 overseas postgraduate students. 11 students were male and 7 were female. The purpose of the survey was to discover the views of the students on a number of matters of personal concern. The survey was conducted by means of a questionnaire given to the students to complete. There were five questions. The first question concerned favorite color and the second favorite number. The next 3 questions were all concerned with aspects of marriage. No.3 looked at the ideal age to get married. No.4 examined the qualities looked for in a partner and No.5 asked about the ideal number of children. The main findings were as follows: Blue was the most popular

color. This was followed by Green and Purple. There was no real significance in the choice of lucky number. About one third of the students said that they had none. Sixty-one percent of the students selected the age group 26 to 30 years as ideal for marriage, followed by 21 to 25 years. In looking at the most important qualities in an ideal partner, someone hoped the person to be Intelligent, others chose Natural, still others indicated Attractive and Honest. The ideal number of children was 2, followed by 3. It is not easy to reach any definite conclusions based upon such a small sample of students from such widely different backgrounds. However, it is clear that majority favorite of 26 to 30 is the ideal age to get married with an intelligent partner, and producing 2 children.

Questions 19 to 22 are based on the passage you have just heard.

19.What is the article mainly about?

20.What do the 5 questions to be answered focus on?

21.What color was chosen as the most popular in the survey?

22.Why is it difficult to reach any definite conclusions from the survey?

Passage Three

Movies are a most popular form of entertainment for people. They go to the movies to escape their normal everyday existence and to experience a life more exciting than their own. They may choose to see a particular film because they like the actor or because they’ve heard the film has a good story. But the main reason why people go to the movies is to escape. Sitting in a dark theatre, watching the images on the screen, they entered another world that is very real to them. They become involved in the lives of the characters in the movie, and for two hours, they forget all about their own problems. They are in a dream world where things often appear to be more romantic and beautiful than in real life. The biggest “dream factories” are in Hollywood, the capital of film industry. Each year, Hollywood studios make hundreds of movies that are shown all over the world.

American movies are popular because they tell interesting stories and they are well-made. They provide the public with heroes who do things the average person would like to do but often can’t. People have to cope w ith many problems and frustrations in their life, so they feel encouraged when they see “the good guys” win in the movies.

Questions 23 to 25 are based on the passage you have just heard.

23.What’s the main reason for people to go to the movies?

24.Which of the following statements is true for the movie watchers?

25.Why are American movies so popular?

News Report One This is Housecall for Health. So, not only could skimping on your sleep hurt your mental health or give you bags under your eyes, but it could also add some pounds to your waist line. This new study, which followed 1600 adults who self reported sleeping habits, found that those who got an average of six hours of shuteye had a waist circumference three centimeters larger than those who slept for nine hours a night. Those who were skimping on sleep also had higher BMI and lower good-cholesterol levels. There was a group who fell in between six and nine hours, with participants getting an average of 7.5 hours of shuteye. Those adults still fared better than those who were only getting six hours. Researchers emphasized that they didn’t find a link between less sleep and poorer diets, nor did they prove a direct explanation as to whether less sleep caused you to gain weight or was the result of weight gain. The Boston Department of Transportation has asked autonomous car companies to pause testing there. This all follows an incident that happened on Sunday in Tempe, Arizona. That night, a self-driving Uber SUV hit and killed a pedestrian. The victim was walking her bicycle across a road when she was struck by an autonomous Volvo. Police say the pedestrian was not using a crosswalk and that there’s also no indication that the self-driving vehicle slow down beforehand. It was travelling at about 40 miles per hour. Uber says it’s fully cooperating with the police investigation and that the company’s hearts go out to the victim's family. This is believed to be the first time someone was killed by a fully autonomous vehicle. The SUV did have a test-driver inside, but the car was in self-driving mode when the crash occurred. Model Test 1 Key to Model Test 1 Part I. Writing Are Families Demanding Too Much from Their Children? Most families demand too much from their children. Usually parents will hope their children to become a musician or a scientist or something else. The children are asked to play the piano and do extra homework everyday. But the parents often ignore the interests of their children, who could not do well because they have to choose what they hate to do. All parents love their children and try to give them their best love. They expect a very successful child. But the problem is, most of the time, their love may be painful for their children. Each child is born unique. Do not force them. Give them their own sky and space, and children have to be themselves. Every child is different. Every child has his/her own position in the world. It is the parents’ responsibility to give them the best advice. Part II. Reading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning)

Band Four 183 Key to Model Test (3) Band Four Part I. Writing Sample Writing: When asked about the relation between love and study on campus, different people will offer different opinions. Some people take it for granted that college students should not fall in love with each other in order to waste their precious time. In their opinion, love is time-consuming and will distract one’s attention from learning. Besides, they think that if a student falls in love, he will certainly fall behind in his study. However, others hold that love on campus may encourage students to study harder. They maintain that a true love will never stand aside while another falls behind in his or her study. And most love stories on campus are developed on the basis of mutual help in study. Weighing up these two arguments, I am for the second one. For one thing, mutual help in life is certainly a strong support in study. For another, true lovers usually help each other both in life and study. Therefore, if guided properly, love will be helpful to the study. Part II. Reading Comprehension (Skimming and scanning) 1. Y [解释] 快速浏览全文黑体字标题,可知,全文都是作者给家长提出的一些建议。故 答案为Yes. 2. Key to Model Test (7) Band Four Part I. Writing Sample Writing: Should the University Campus be Open to Tourists? Thanks to the rapid development of our modern society, great changes have taken place on the campus. On university campus, especially in some famous ones, such as Peking University and Tsinghua University, tourists are always seen looking around everywhere. When it comes to the problem, people’s opinions differ. Some folks harbor the idea that it not only makes some profit from the tourism, but also promotes the fame of the university. But others hold the different belief that the university campus should not be open to tourists. Sometimes they get into teaching buildings, libraries and so on, thus make noises and throw rubbish everywhere. Besides that, some tourists trample grass to take photos, and sculpture on trees to leave words. These will affect the environment of the campus badly. In my opinion, university campus should be open to tourists. As more tourists come to visit universities, these universities can widen their influence. That is because it is a dream for many Chinese parents and young ambitious students. But at the same time, the university should try to set up some rules to prevent tourists from disturbing the normal operations. Part II. Reading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning) 1. 8. oil , gas kerosene ,coal , wood , and tobacco products. 参见第二段第二行。 9. there is always fresh air going in and out/ there is good ventilation. 参见第三段第二行。 10. show up a long time after exposure to air pollution. 参见第六段第一行。Part III.
