Ten years can wear down a romantic relationship, or it can let love blossom.

For Taiwan singer Christine Fan , it’s the latter. Her 10-year love affair is about to culminate in a wedding.

As for the ceremony, the star has the simplest taste. She wants to wear flat shoes, have some snacks and chat with close friends.

―I’ ll let my boyfriend Blackie take care of every thing,‖ said Fa n with typical humor. ―I only have to make sure I show up on time.‖

Like her burgeoning romance, this superstar’s singing career is also on the rise. Her new best-selling album Love & Fanfan is both a witness to their 10-year love affair and her own philosophy.

The lyrics of the album’s title song The Most Important Decision speaks her mind.

―You have a bunch of shortcomings. You become so *stubborn that even the fairy *stomps her feet in anger.

―But life is far from being perfect, and you are my most important decision in life,‖ Fan sings.

Instead of seeking perfection and glory, the singer seems to always enjoy a peaceful way of life.

Her music reflects her simple style of dressing. And she has one simple reason for selecting her Mr Right.

Fan admitted: ―He’s just a *quick-witted and smart-talking guy who never bores me.‖

Their relationship went official when Chen carried Fan on his back out of her home during a flood.

They had a seven years’ *itch, but survived it when Chen proposed to Fan during an NBA game last year.

As Chen s aid: ―Regardless of ups and downs, we are still together. We’re just like a *compass and she is the center point. My life has no direction without her.‖

It turns out that concentrating on their partners' physical attractiveness may make people less happy in relationships, new research suggests.

Partner-objectification, where that focus is placed on a partner's physical qualities over everything else, hasn't been studied in the context of romantic relationships.

Eileen Zurbriggen of the University of California polled 159 sophomores. The students were asked to fill out a survey on their romantic relationships, their media consumption and their feelings of objectification.

Objectification was measured by how strongly the students agreed or disagreed with statements such as: "I rarely think about how I/my partner looks" and "I often worry about whether the clothes I'm/my partner is wearing make me/them look good." The men showed higher levels of

partner-objectification than the women.

Eileen found partner-objectification lowered relationship satisfaction, as well as men's sexual satisfaction. This could be because concentrating on your partner's attractiveness tends to make you less concerned with your partner as a whole, leading to a less satisfying relationship and decreased intimacy, she said.

Secret FBI files have been released detailing how US officials saw a UFO explode over Utah – and aliens land near Roswell in New Mexico.

A declassified document from 1949 tells how three men, on patrols miles apart, each reported seeing a UFO break up over mountains north of Salt Lake City.

Among them is a 1950 statement from special agent Guy Hottel, which seems to provide evidence for the theory that aliens landed at Roswell, New Mexico.

He wrote that the flying saucers were "described as being circular in shape with raised centers, approximately 50 feet in diameter."

In a statement that is reminiscent of the hit 1990s TV programme The X-Files, he went on to describe the alien life forms inside the UFOs.

"Each one was occupied by three bodies of human shape but only 3 feet tall," he wrote.

The bodies were "dressed in a metallic cloth of a very fine texture. Each body was bandaged in a mannersimilar to the blackout suitsused by speed flyers and test pilots."

A gent Hottel suggested that the UFOs had crashed in New Mexico because high-powered government radar had interfered with their operating systems.

President Barack Obamahas complained about the loss of privacy that comes with being leader of the United States, regretting the loss of simple pleasures such as a long walk or a trip to the car washor supermarket.

"I just miss – I miss being anonymous," he said. "I miss Saturday morning, rolling out of bed, not shaving, getting into my car with my girls, driving to the supermarket, squeezing the fruit, getting my car washed, taking walks. I can't take a walk."

His dream, he said, was to "go through Central Park and watch folks passing by ... spend the day watching people – I miss that".

Faced with simmeringcriticism for playing more golf than most previous occupants of the White House, he explained that the sport was simply the best way of getting away from it all.

"It's the only excuse I have to get outside for four hours at a stretch," he told Hearst magazines.

Though he said he enjoyed his life in the White House, he felt disillusionedwith the some of the ways of Washington, which he has failed in his pledge to change, such as the "kabukidance" among political parties before serious policy discussions begin. His comments may be seen as vindicationby critics who have accused him of appearing too detached, and being slow to engage in crucial issues such as Libya and the near shutdown of the US government last week.

Since arriving at the White House in January 2009, Mr Obama has already racked up60 rounds of golf in office, more than George W Bush did in his eight years.

In terms of ability, Golf Digest magazine has ranked Mr Obama eighth out of the 18 presidents who played the game since it became established in the early 20th century.

Get out of the library. You can have a degree and a huge GPA and not be ready for the workplace. A student should plan that college is four years of experience rather than 120 credits.

Start a business in your dorm room. It’s cheap, Google and Yahoo are dying to buy your website, and it’s better than washing dishes in the cafeteria.

Get involved on campus. When it comes to career success, emotional intelligence—social skills to read and lead others—gets you farther than knowledge or job competence.

Play a sport. People who play sports earn more money than couch potatoes, and women executives who played sports attribute much of their career success to t heir athletic experience. You don’t need to be great at sports, you just need to be part of a team.

Separate your expectations from those of your parents. Otherwise you wake up and realize you’re not living your own life.

Try new things that you’re not good at. Ditch the superstar mentality that if you don’t reach the top, become president, get an A+, or get promot ed to editor-in-chief, then the efforts were worthless. It’s important to learn to enjoy things without getting recognition.

Define success for yourself. Society defines success very narrowly. Rather than defining success as financial gain or accolades, define it in terms of individual interests and personal happiness.

Make your job search a priority. Jobs do not fall in your lap, you have to chase them. Especially a good one. It’s a job to look for a job. Use spreadsheets to track your progress. And plan early.

Take a course in happiness. Happiness study is revolutionizing how we think of psychology, economics, and sociology. Preview: Learn to be more optimistic.

Take an acting course. The best actors are actually being their most authentic selves. You need to learn to communicate authentically so that people will listen and feel connected.

Learn to give a compliment. The best compliments are specific. Practice on your professors. If you give a good compliment the recipient will think you’re smarter: a big payoff in college, but a bigger payoff in the work world.

Use the career center. These people are experts at positioning you in the workforce and their only job is to get you a job. How can you not love this place? If you find yourself thinking the people at your c ollege’s career center are idiots, it’s probably a sign that you really, really don’t know what you’re doing.

Develop a strong sense of self by dissing colleges that reject you. Happy people have a more durable sense of self and aren’t as buffeted by outside events. When bad things happen, don’t take it personally. This is how the most successful business people bounce back quickly from setbacks.

Get rid of your perfectionist streak. It is rewarded in college, but it leads to insane job stress and an inability to feel satisfied with your work.

Work your way through college. Getting involved in student organizations counts, and so does feeding children in Sierra Leone or sweeping floors in the chemistry building. Each experience you have can grow into something bigger.

A great bullet on the resume for a junior in college.

Make to-do lists. You can’t achieve dreams if you don’t have a plan to get there.

Passage 1 There are some very good things about open education. This way of teaching allows the students to grow as people develop their own interests in many subjects. Open education allows students to be responsible for their own education, as they are responsible for what they do in life. Some students do badly in a traditional classroom. The open classroom may allow them to enjoy learning. Some students will be happier in an open education school. They will not have to worry about grades or rules. For students who worry about these things a lot, it is a good idea to be in an open classroom. But many students will not do well in an open classroom. For some students, there are too few rules. These students will do little in school. They will not make good use of open education. Because open education is so different from traditional education, these students may have a problem getting used to making so many choices. For many students it is important to have some rules in the classroom. They worry about the rules even when there are no rules. Even a few rules will help this kind of student. The last point about open education is that some traditional teachers do not like it. Many teachers do not believe in open education. Teachers who want to have an open classroom may have many problems at their schools. You now know what open education is. Some of its good points and bad points have been explained. You may have your own opinion about open education. The writer thinks that open education is a good idea, but only in theory. In actual fact, it may not work very well in a real class or school. The writer believes that most students, but of course not all students, want some structure in their classes. They want to have rules. In some cases, they must be made to study some subjects. Many students are pleased to find subjects they have to study interesting. They would not study those subjects if they did not have to. 1.Open education allows the students to ____. A.grow as the educated B.be responsible for their future C.develop their own interests D.discover subjects outside class 2. Open education may be a good idea for the students who ____. A.enjoy learning B.worry about grades C.do well in a traditional classroom D.are responsible for what they do in life 3. Some students will do little in an open classroom because ____. A.there are too few rules B.they hate activities C.open education is similar to the traditional education D.they worry about the rules 4. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?____ A.Some traditional teachers do not like it.

Bob Crossley, a human-resources expert notices this in the job applications that come cross his desk every day. “It’s amazing how many candidates eliminate themselves,”he says. “Resumes arrive with stains. Some candidates don’t bother to spell the company’s name correctly. Once I see a mistake, I eliminate the candidate, ”Crossley concludes. If they cannot take of these details. “Why should we trust them with a job?” Can we pay too much attention to detail? Perfectionists struggle over little things at the cost of something larger they work toward. “To keep from losing the forest for the trees,”says Charles Garfield, associate professor at the University of California, San Francisco, “we must constantly ask ourselves how the details we’re working on fit into the larger picture they don’t, we should drop them and move to something else.” Garfield compares this process to his work as a computer scientist at NASA. “The Apollo II moon launch was slightly off-course 90 percent of the time,”says Garfield. “But a successful landing was still likely because we knew the exact coordinates of our goal. This allowed us to landing was still likely because we knew the exact coordinates of our goal. This allowed us to make adjustments as necessary.”Knowing where we want to go helps us judge the importance of every task we undertake. Too often we believe what accounts for other’s success is some special secret or a lucky break. But rarely is success so mysterious. Again and again, we see that by doing little things within our grasp well, large rewards follow. 66. Which of the following is the author’s advice to the reader? A) Although too much attention to details may be costly, they should not be overlooked B) Don’t forget details when drawing pictures

Marvelous metamaterials Invisibility cloaks would have remained impossible, forever locked in science fiction, had it not been for the development of metamaterials. In Greek, “meta” means beyond, and metamaterials can do things beyond what we see in the natural world — like shuffle light waves around an object, and then bring them back together. If scientists ever manage to build a full-fledged invisibility cloak, it will probably be made of metamaterials. “We are creating materials that don’t exist in nature, and that have a physical phenomenon that doesn’t exist in nature,” says engineer Dentcho Genov. “That is the most exciting thing.”Genov designs and builds metamaterials — such as those used in cloaking — at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, Louisiana. An invisibility cloak will probably not be the first major accomplishment to come from the field of metamaterials. Other applications are just as exciting. In many labs, for example, scientists are working on building a hyperlens. A lens is a device — usually made of glass — that can change the direction of light waves. Lenses are used in microscopes and cameras to focus light, thus allowing a researcher to see small things or a photographer to capture image of things that are far away. A hyperlens, however, would be made of metamaterials. And since metamaterials can do things with light that ordinary materials can’t, the hyperlens would be a powerful tool. A hyperlens would allow researchers to see things at the smallest scale imaginable — as small as the wavelength of visible light.
