Finn:

Finn:

Finn:

Finn:

Finn:

Finn,BBC

Finn:

Woodfox has been in solitary confinement for 43 years after the killing of a guard at the Louisiana State Penitentiary in 1972. Richard Hulls reports. “Campaigners for the ‘Angola Three’ have always maintained there was no physical evidence to link them to the crime and all convictions have been overturned on numerous occasions. In his ruling, the judge said Albert Woodfox's poor health and the length of the time spent in solitary confinement had contributed to the decision to free him. So, newspapers that are free to write anything they think the public need to know and TV news that can report anything? William: Yes they can report anything, including things that look bad for the government! Scandals. Wang Fei: A scandal, so something very bad that damages someone's reputation. William: Exactly. And one of the most famous scandals from American history is the Watergate scandal of the early 1970s. Wang Fei: Watergate… that was why President Nixon had to resign wasn't it? William: Exactly, yes, because he was shown to have lied to the American people and basically obstructed the course of justice. The whole thing started when five men were arrested for breaking into an office block called Watergate. This was where the Democratic Party had their headquarters. Later on, the men were linked to the campaign to re-elect President Nixon, who was in the Republican Party. Wang Fei: Well, this is very interesting but what has it got to do with The English We Speak, William?

One of the most commonly-held beliefs regarding health and nutrition in the UK has been found to be untrue, according to a new scientific study. For many years British people have been recommended to eat at least 'five-a-day' –that is five items of fruit or vegetables every day in order to improve their health and reduce the likelihood of illness, in particular cancer. The recommendation was first put forward in 1990 by the World Health Organization which said that the 'five-a-day' diet could prevent cancer and other chronic diseases. Since then the advice has been a mainstay of public health policies in many developed countries, such as the UK,where the population eat a high proportion of junk food. Many health campaigns have promoted the advice, and indeed much food packaging in Britain states how the contents will constitute part of your five-a-day. However,a study of 500,000 Europeans from 10 different countries refutes the commonly-believed suggestion that up to 50% of cancers could be prevented by increasing the public's consumption of fruit and vegetables. Instead the study, which is led by researchers from a well-respected New York medical school, estimates that only 2.5% of cancers could be averted by eating more fruit and veg.

Is it right to tell students to pack their bags and leave the UK halfway through their degree courses ? Up to 2,700 overseas students have to leave the country or find an alternative course by 1 December, after a British university has been stripped of the right to recruit international students. London Metropolitan University is no longer allowed to authorise visas for students outside the European Union after its licence was revoked . The UK Border Agency made this controversial decision after it found that London Metropolitan University has not taken adequate measures to ensure applicants are genuine students. It claims that more than a quarter of the 101 students sampled have no right to remain in the UK and that there isn't proper evidence to show students have reached a satisfactory level of English. It says there are also attendance monitoring issues, which means it is impossible to know whether students are turning up for lectures . The UK Border Agency's decision has been widely criticised for damaging the reputation of the UK's universities and disrupting legitimate students. Donna Marie Winstanley, from Hong Kong, doesn't know whether she'll be allowed to finish her university course: "If you have studied in London, you are more likely to get a better job in Asia. (…) I 've already paid around £16,000 in fees and was preparing to pay just over £8,000 for this year's fees." MPs have called on Immigration Minister Damian Green to allow existing students to finish their degree courses, but Mr Green said he would "enforce the rules". Some prioritise a crackdown on illegal immigration while others think current students should be allowed to stay: which school of thought do you subscribe to?
