Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1Brief introduction about Amy Tan

Amy Tan (born February 19, 1952) is an American writer whose works explore mother-daughter relationships. Her most well-known work is The Joy Luck Club, which has been translated into 35 languages. In 1993, the book was adapted into a commercially successful film. Tan has written several other bestselling novels, including The Kitchen God's Wife, The Hundred Secret Senses, The Bonesetter's Daughter and Saving Fish from Drowning. She also wrote a collection of non-fiction essays entitled The Opposite of Fate: A Book of Musings. Her most recent novel Saving Fish from Drowning explores the tribulations experienced by a group of people who disappear while on an expedition in the jungles of Burma. In addition to these, Tan has written two children's books: The Moon Lady (1992) and Sagwa, the Chinese Siamese Cat (1994), which was turned into an animated series which aired on PBS. She also appeared on PBS in a short spot encouraging children to write. Tan is also in a band with several other well-known writers, the Rock Bottom Remainders.William Wei has said: “she is one of the famous women writers who has broken through the Asian American ethnic literature.”(1993,P.88.)

1.2Brief introdution about The Joy Luck Club

The Joy Luck Club is a well-known American-Chinese writer Amy Tan's representative works. Alice Walker has said that: “the novel is honest, moving, and beautiful courageous.Amy Tan shows us China,Chinese-American women and their families, and the mysrery of the mother-daughter bond in ways that we have not experienced before.”(1989,P1.)In the novel, she presented to the reader four Chinese immigrant mothers and their daughters .Although living in America, the immigrant mothers cling to Chinese traditional culture. They organize the Joy Luck Club regularly,a weekly meeting of best Chinese friends. Four mothers with their own view of the world, their world view is based on their experiences of life in China. However, the girls from their mothers can not understand the Chinese culture because the are America-born. So there are conflicts that have been vividly described in this book. The novel is composed of four sections, each of which contains four separate narratives. In the first four stories of the book, the

mothers, speaking in turn, recall with astonishing clarity their relationships with their own mothers ,and they worry that their daughters’recollections of them will never possess the same intensity. In the second section, these daughters relate their recollections of their childhood relationships with their mothers;the great lucidity and force with which they tell their stories proves their mothers’fears at least partially unfounded. In the third group of stories, the four daughters narrate their adult dilemmas-troubles in marriage and with their careers.Although they believe that their mothers’antiquated ideas do not pertain to their own very American lifestyles, their search for solution inevitably brings them back to their relationships with the older generation. In the final group of stories, the mothers struggle to offer solutions and support to their daughters,in the process learning more about themselves. It reveals cultural conflicts between the East and the West as manifested by the conflicts between the two generations of Chinese Americans with the description of psychological estrangements and emotional conflicts between mothers and their daughters.American scholar Payant thinks “the novel is always stripping off the layers of the skin in order to touch the mothers and daughters’mutual bone”(1993,P71.)After a series of misunderstanding and conflicts, mothers and their daughters are in harmony with their efforts of love, communication and understanding, which also stands for the compatibility between Chinese and American cultures. It brings hope that we can reconcile the opposition in our lives between past and present, between generation and between cultures.

.1.3 Introduction about about the thesis

The thesis is the discussion about the mother-daughter collision and compatibility between Chinese and American culture, entirely sepertated by four major parts: Introduction, Conflict between Chinese &American culture, Compatibility between Chinese & American culture, and Conclusion. In addition, the paper argues the different living environment, different culture heritage as well as different value which are the main causes of mother-daughter conflict in the novel.More importantly, after a series of misunderstandings, the two generations are in harmony which means cultural compatibility between China and America. It brings hope that contradiction or oppositions in our lives between past and present, between generation and between culture can be possibly even well reconciled.

Chapter2 Conflict between Chinese &Amerian culture

2.1The overview of conflict between Chinese &Amerian culture

In China, the central value outlook of Chinese culture is collectivism.Individuals must regard collective as the most important and follow collective interest.According to the principles of collectivism,it is mother’s duty to educate children. And in Chinese culture, daughters are thought to be parts of their mothers and they must obey their mothers’arrangements,The immigrant mothers follow the culture, interfere in dayghters’affairs and even run things all by themselves without consulting daughters. In Chinese families, achieving success is not a person’s business, but an important duty to support a whole family.A person’s success is not the realization of his or her value, but a link of a family’s prosperity. However,American culture is founded on the ideals of freedom, democracy and equality. It emphasizes equal rights, free competition and self-achievement.As a result, the American central value outlook is individualism. In the novel ,Amy Ling once said: “ the relationship between the mothers and the daughters is painful,it is the open war of two well-matched strenghs.”(1990,P139.)Daughters are deeply influenced by individualism so they always try to be out of control of their mother in order to live freely in American ways. They dream of being real Americans, speaking American English, wearing American clothes and having American food.In their opinions, success is the result of one’s effort. It has little relationship with others.Owing to different value outlooks, when mothers want to control daughters or make expectations, daughters are against strongly. There are many kinds of contradictions and conflicts between the first American immigrants and their children, the conflicts between Chinese mother’s expectations and American daughters’right and the unavoidable conflicts between Chinese and American culture.

2.1.1Conflict between two family values

From the opinions of Francis, “In the chinese cultural tradition, family does not only stand for the parents’power of their children, but also means the mutual dependant relation between the mothers and the daughters. The genetic relation is the necessary connection with spirit and social life,in American culture,it emphasizes the awareness of self-realization and independence, stimulates freedom and individualiam, the parents in America pretend to cut off the association with their children.”(1987.P77andP225.)In China, under the deeply influence of Confucianism, chinese highly praise this kind of cuitufal system, which takes family ethic as its central element. The extremely strong family values develop into an aggregate type of behavior

pattern,The Joy Luck Club mothers has been strongly influenced by the idea of Chung Hsiao, loyalty to the emperor and filial piety to parents and by the Confucian doctrine of three obediences and four virtues. The three obediences were to be obedient one’s father when unmarried,to one’s husband when married and to one’s son when widowed. However, “America stimulates the freedom and individualiam,so their behavior pattern is discrete type.”(2004,P1.) Liu xiaohong once said: “.In America, a man’s natural right country, the daughters regard the patriarchal system as infringing act.”(1989,P40-45.)For example,Lindo believed that a mother and her daughter were inseparable and a daughter’s success also belonged to her mother. When Waverly practiced playing chess,Lindo liked to give her some suggestion. When Waverly won a competition,Lindo would show off in front of others,Waverly told her mother that she should shut up and should not show off since she did not know anything about chess. The conflict between mother and daughter became open when the latter angrily shouted at her mother in the street: “Why do you have to use me to show off?If you want to show off,why do not you learn to play chess?”(1989,P45.)The conflicts between the two family values ,to a certain extent ,reflect the different values between Chinese and American culture. From the novel,Yang jing once said: “the conflicts of Lindo and Waverly reflect the conflicts of the Chinese collectivism and the American individualism.”(1999,P106-108.)

2.1.2 Conflict between two languages

Communication barriers between the two generations, also come from the language. In the novel,Jingmei says: “My mother and I never really understood one another. We translated each other’s meaning and I seemed hear less than was said, while my mother heard more.”Duncan once said: “social organizations exsit and develop in the communication with symbolic significance signs and the symbolic significance signs are the approach for the cultural acquisition and the cultural diffusion.”(1991,P.176.)We believe that for the mothers,Chinese will always be their mother tongue as China will always be the home for their soul. They can always speak Chinese fluently at any time if they want. For the mothers, “Chinese is not only the tool to resist the culture rule, but also is a way to retain the important significance in American present world.”(1993,P.604.)So the Su insisted to continue The Joy Luck Club.Because it is a habitat of traditional Chinese culture in their heart. They get together regularly a weekly meeting their best Chinese friends, they can put on Chinese tradition clothes, play mahjong, taste Chinese traditional food and talk about their own stories in the past time and their hopes for their daughters with Chinese accent. They can feel spiritual comfort in an atmosphere of intense. They speak in their special language, half in broken English, half in their own Chinese dialect. At the same time, there are many kinds of difficulties in communication with the mothers and the daughters because of

lack of the language and culture base. This is not only the problem of genetation gap,but also is the cultural understanding deficiency, which is made by the language system and the psychological expectations. For example, when Lindo Jong speak to Waverly with great pride about Taiyuan, the capital city of Shanxi, her hometown, but Waverly thinks her mother is talking about Taiwan, for the oversea Chinese mother, wherever she goes, she always considers herself as a descendant of the dragon or the scions of Huang Di and Yan Di.They live in Chinatown.Taiyuan is the place where the Chinese mother has been longing for all her life,She feels so sad when she hears her daughter refers it as Taiwan.Chinese people’s loyalty to the motherland is deeply moted in the Chinese traditional mainstream. In traditional Chinese society, the family and the country share the same structure.A family is a minimized country and country is a maximized family.Family members or citizens should keep loyal to the head wherever she or he goes. This example perfectly shows the language has been a great gap between mother and daughter. With the years of growth these second-generation immigrants even completely forgot they are Chinese. They no longer use Chinese, instead of it,they use English to communicate with others.

2.1.3Conflict between two views of marriage

The value theory is the standard and vade mecum of people’s behaviors and attitudes and it determines the human activity in the specific environment. When we talk about marriage value in The Joy Luck Club, there are many conficts between the mothers and the daughters, the Chinese and American culture. In the chinese tradition, children’s matrimonial affair plays a very important role in daily life, parents hope that their children will lead a happy life,so the parents’interference for the children’s marriage is meritorious and understandable.Since the children fell in love with others, they have paid much attention them, although the children have got married and had their own family, the parents will still pay attention to their marriage life. However,in American individulism culture, falling in love with others, living together, getting married, getting divorce are all personal freedom and authorities, nobody can not interfere with them.In The Joy Luck Club, the mothers show much solicitude in the daughters’ mate selection and marriage, which make the conflicts between the mothers and daughters. For example, when Lindo finds her daughter Waverly’s first boyfriend is an irresponsible American man,she takes flinty measures to break up them, even uses the shoes to attack them. For me ,Lindo is a kind mother, the way she express love to her daughter is simply, direct ,responsible, however, her daughter does not understand her very well. The daughter who is under much influence of American culture does not get advice from her mother, however, she runs away with her boyfriend in order to resist her mother’s interference. When Waverly’s first marriage comes to

nothing, she even adds the reason of failure to her mother, she thinks that her mother has cursed her marriage. However, faced with the setback of Waverly’s marriage, the mother does not look on it indifferently, she uses her life experience to enlighten her daughter in order to get her out of the dilemma. In the novel,Rose is an obedient girl and has a sweet temper, she gets married with an American man.Because the chinese value theory has exerted a subtle influence on her character, after the marriage, Rose has docile humility and never puts forward her opinions,in this way ,she thinks it is the love for her husband. However,in American value theory,as the independence of the individual, nobody will give up his right easily,so will the marriage. The American have a strong realization of right and equality,so in the eye of the husband,Rose is a wife, who loses her own judgement towards life and marriage,so the husband does not want to share happiness and woe with Rose, even he puts forward the divorce. When Rose is in the agony, her mother finds many active ways to give advice to her daughter behind the scenes and encourages Rose to speak out her opinions bravely. When Rose gets advice from her mother and tells her thoughts to her husband, she gets the love from her husband again,to her husband’s surprise,he finds his wife is not an obsequious woman. In this case, the daughter feel her mother’s love, and also finds that the mother understangs her much better than others, which is good for her own marriage.

Chapter3 Compatibility between Chinese

&American culture

In the book, conlicts between mothers and daughters, between Chinese and American culture are everywhere. At first, mothers and daughter do not know how to handle the problems. No efficient mesures are taken.Even one daughter says,“I wish I am not your daughter.”to express her dissatisfaction.Samovar once said: “people attract and approach each other because of similarity, however, the custom and the habit make them insulate each other.”(1991,P2.)American mothers’embrace and kiss, which are admired by others ,when compared with the chinese mother s’severe love, although the way to express love is different, but the essence of love is the same.American parents’democracy has brought up the children’s the independence and

self-reliance,at the same time, the chinese parents’despotism has taught the children the invisible power and the indomitable courage, they are different approaches but get equally satisfactory results.Amy Tan’s description and analysis of cultural difference reflect a typical kind of humanism:“in the different colours of clothes and shins,we are more or less the same.”(1993,P61.)Although the people of different backgrounds have differences in the behaviour, mode of thinking, and the values, they are all eager for the commucations with others. The novel The Joy Luck Club admits the difference and does not avoid the conflicts, from the view of the book,it insists that as long as people have great intentions and seek common ground while reserving differences, the people of different cultural backgrounds will get closed.Zhang ruihua once said: “the compatilibility of the mothers and the daughters mean the compatilibility between the Chinese and the American culture.”(2001,P3.)In the book, there are many things reflecting the compatibility between Chinese &American culture.

3.1The mothers gradually accept the American culture

When we talk about the mothers in the book, there are many changes about them. The mothers take off the chinese robe and put on the American pants and skirts, also, they get used to the every weekend’s religious activities in America and speak the shoddy English, which is laughed at by their daughters. There are many concrete examples, which can show the mothers’ accepting the American culture. When Anmei’s son Subin drowns in the sea unfortunately, first, the God comes to her mind, rather than the chinese bodhisattva. When it comes to Lindo, she changes her attitude towards her daughter’s huaband. At first, she even takes off her shoes angrily to attack her dauguter and the daughter’s huaband because of their elopement, but after a series of misunderstanding and conflicts, the mother accepts her daughter’s husband and teaches the American man how to eat the crab lovingly.Although the daughter’s husband has done some behaviors which are against the Chinese culture, such like, when he comes to his wife’s mother’s home,he only takes a bottle of grape wine;when he uses the chopsticks to have a meal,he lets the soup drip on his skirt;when her wife’s mother praises him with some implicative words ,however,he misunderstands her meanings;when he says good bye to the wife’s mother,he addresses her without a honorific title. To her daughter’s surprise, the mother casts aside the difference between the East and the West and accepts the American man,in fact,it means that people in this novel show lenient and respect to the difference between chinese and American culture.

3.2 The daughters understand their mothers much better than before

With the passing years, the daughters who has acknowledged the American culture in their hearts experience the setback of the enterprise, the marriage, and the family,at last ,they realize the edge position in the USA much better than before,so they become more mature in their daily life.At the same time, they feel the influence of the Chinese cultule and they realize that the mothers’ harsh criticism is only a kind of self-defence,so the relationship with the mothers and the daughters mitigate because of the daughters’self-understanding.There are many examples which can prove this phenomeon. For example, when waverly finds that “her mother uses the pan as the helmet and armour and uses the needle as the sword in order to get the daughter’s invite.”From the sentence,we can find the mother’s confrontation and stubborn,in fact ,the mother’s stubborn wants to approach the daughter, after the daughter understands the mother’s meaning, she realize that the mother wants to tell the daughter all her wishes in standard English.Another example is about Waverly’s honeymoon, when the daughter and the mother knows each other well, the daughter wants her mother to go with them together. She thinks that it is a great idea, which means the sublime of the cultural tolerance and cultural fusion. When it comes to Jing-mei Woo,after her mother’s death, she feels much loss and guilty conscience,so she takes the place of her mother and goes to the mahjong table. Also, she decides to go to China to call on her twin sisters. In China, she gets more information about her mother and her name’s beautiful meaning.Understanging her mother well means the melt of the culture of the diaphragm. When Jing-mei watches and embraces her twin sisters, she realizes her Chinese identity, she thinks the Chinese culture is her family, her blood, her all life,at this time, the East culture and the West culture mingle together very well.

3.3The rise of China promotes the reconcile of the Chinese and the American culture.

As a famous saying goes, “a weak nation has no diplomacy.”In the same way, faced with the cultureof the very developed country, the poor country will lose the right of speech. The only way to get the other developed countries’ respect and attention is the national prosperity, only in this can clear up the cultural hegemony and get the cultural integration. From the novel The Joy

Luck Club,we can find many example.First, when it comes to the mothers’immigrant,in the 1940s,China is in the wars, the war is going on with all its stresses and strains,so the country is poor and weak. After the founding of new China, althouth the economic develops a little, the country experiences the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution. In the book, when An-mei Hsu scrapes up 2000 dollars and takes plenty of American clothes to China in order to call on her little brother. To her surprise, there are many relatives coming to meet her, such as,her little brother, her brother’s wife’s younger brothers and sisters from different parents, her distant cousin, her distant cousin’s husband, her distant cousin husband’s uncle and so on.At last,An-mei wipes out all her money and the relatives carve up her clothes, even her distant cousin husband’s uncle lends 500 dollars from her in order to buy a motorbike, after he gets the money, he disappears at once.An-mei’s original idea is want to give the 2000 dollars to her little to make him lead a rich life, however,to her disappoint, she goes back to the USA without taking anything except her tired body.In the 1980s,China government tries best to govern the country,in the development of economic comes out the market economy, which takes the place of the planned economy.China reforms and opens to the outside world,so the comprehensive national strength of China becomes stronger and stronger,at the same time, the Chinese cultule gets more respect from other developed countries in the west world. In the novel,we can find many examples which can prove this idea. When Lindo comes to China to visit her family or goes to visit her relatives, she finds that many families have colour television sets, her relatives does not need any gift from her.The phenomenon is very different from An-mei.The another example is about Jing-mei Woo,when she comes to Guangzhou, she sees many kinds of big buildings, which are the same as the great architectures in the USA.When she goes into the reserved hotel, the grand hotel gives her the wrong impression that she makes a mistake in finding the hotel. In her mind, she does not think it is China, a country which believes in the communism. At the same time, she get some information from her mother that the sons have carried on the business in combination with the other people successfully. From this example,Jing-mei realizes that many people in China can enrich their family in their own ways.Faced with the great development of China,Lindo feels proud of China and Jing-mei Woo gets much surprise from the east country. For the Chinese Americans, with the development of China, this kind of people who represent the Chinese culture get more repect and understanding,so we can conclude that the cultural fusion of the Chinese culture and the American culture will have a bright future.

Chapter 4 Conclusion

Although America has a history of a little more than 200 years, but as the most developed country in the world,it specific culture has undoubtedly powerful effects. To a large extend,American culture stands for western culture. In Americans’eyes, since Chinese culture has a history of five thousands years it is the quintessence of eastern culture and full of charm.According to description of the most common relationship---the relationship between mothers and their daughters,The Joy Luck Club combines the two different charming cultures, describes the conflicts between them and shows that cultural compatibility can be achieved by love, communication and understangding. The Joy Luck Club, through the distinctive perspective of Chinese people, portrayed relationship between mothers and daughters so delicately and vividly that Amy become a new star in American literary circles.Writing novels,Amy rarely described the direct conflict between characters.Instead of direct conflict,Amy concerned much about the social relations, concluding family relations, sexual relations, and mother-daughter relations.Apparently,Amy composed The Joy Luck Club base on these relationships. Wang yongmei once said: “The Joy Luck Club delievers the message that people should desalinate the cultural identity and eliminate the cultural identity of opposites.”(2004,P6)

The Joy Luck Club (1989) is a best-selling novel written by Amy Tan. It focuses on four Chinese American immigrant families in San Francisco, California who start a club known as "the Joy Luck Club," playing the Chinese game of mahjong for money while feasting on a variety of foods. The book is structured somewhat like a mahjong game, with four parts divided into four sections to create sixteen chapters. The three mothers and four daughters (one mother, Suyuan Woo, dies before the novel opens) share stories about their lives in the form of vignettes. Each part is preceded by a parable relating to the game. In 1993, the novel was adapted into a feature film directed by Wayne Wang and starring Ming-Na, Lauren Tom, Tamlyn Tomita, France Nguyen, Rosalind Chao, Kieu Chinh, Tsai Chin, Lisa Lu, and Vivian Wu. The screenplay was written by the author Amy Tan along with Ronald Bass. The novel was also adapted into a play, by Susan Kim, which premiered at Pan Asian Repertory Theatre in New York. Characters Mothers Suyuan Woo During the Second World War, Suyuan lives in China while her husband at the time served as an officer in Chungking (Chongqing). She starts the original Joy Luck Club with her three friends to cope with the war. There is little to eat, but they pretend it is a feast, and talk about their hopes for the future. On the day of the Japanese invasion, Suyuan leaves her house with nothing but a bag of clothes, a bag of food, and her twin baby daughters. During the long journey, Suyuan contracts such severe dysentery that she feels certain she will die. Fearing that a dead mother would doom her babies' chances of rescue, she reluctantly and emotionally leaves her daughters under a barren tree, together with all her belongings, along with a note asking anyone who might find the babies to care for them and contact the father. Suyuan then departs, expecting to die. However, she is rescued by a truck and finds out her husband has died. She later remarries, comes to America, forms a new Joy Luck Club with three other Chinese female immigrants she met at church, and gives birth to another daughter. But her abandonment of the twin girls haunts her for the rest of her life. After many years, Suyuan learns that the twins were adopted, but dies of a brain aneurysm before she can meet them. It is her American-born daughter Jing-mei who fulfills her long-cherished wish of reuniting with her elder twin half-sisters. As Suyuan dies before the novel begins, her history is told by Jing-mei, based on her knowledge of her mother's stories, anecdotes from her father, and what the other members of the Joy Luck Club tell her. An-Mei Hsu An-Mei is raised by her grandparents and other relatives during her early years in Ningbo after her widowed mother shocks the family by becoming a concubine to a middle-aged wealthy man after her first husband's death. This becomes a source of conflict for the young An-Mei, as her aunts and uncles deeply resent her mother for such a dishonorable act. They try to convince An-Mei that it is not fitting for her to live with her disgraced mother, who is now forbidden to enter the family home. An-Mei's mother, however, still wishes to be part of her daughter's life. After An-Mei's grandmother dies, An-mei moves out to live with her mother in the home of her mother's new husband, Wu-Tsing. An-Mei learns that her mother was coerced into being Wu-Tsing's concubine through the manipulations of his Second Wife, the favorite. This woman arranged for An-Mei's mother, still in mourning for her original husband, to be raped by Wu-Tsing. The stigma left An-Mei's mother with

The Joy Luck Club" is about the four Chinese immigrant women and their children grew up in the United States between the respective story. The title of the novel" the Joy Luck Club" is the original mothers played mahjong party. These women moved to the United States for decades, but they still think constantly of raised by traditional education, abide by the Chinese for thousands of years the penetration in the blood, women have become almost feudal patriarchal ideology nature. Their common ideal is to strict education, over his daughter, so they can escape their this generation of women's destiny, they become the eyes of a happy woman. However, the mother of the bundle, the girls in their different ways a revolt, in this race, class, gender inequality in American society, two generations of women staged a fight each other to reach the same goal by different routes, by mutual recognition of tragicomedy. In the tragedy and comedy, the deepest impression is not character mouth lay things, but they cannot speak, those unable to touch, carefully conceal mentioning things, is the silence behind something. Here, silence has become a symbol, its huge destructive power to destroy the existence of female self-esteem, self-confidence and courage, so that they are suppressed in the heavy loss of the ability to survive. However once the silence is broken, the destructive power will immediately disappear, have been suppressed for a long time will be the recovery of human nature, the relationship between balance and harmony will be restored. " The Joy Luck Club" in they and most of the tales are silent and breaking the silence on the main line of weaving together The Joy Luck Club,"" to give our inspiration: in the United States, is one of the so-called multicultural, namely sub-culture and mainstream culture to maintain a consistent pattern, essentially just a trick to cover other's eyes and ears, and cultural assimilation and psychological aggression cover. Then, with the other minority women, Chinese women only to regain the original self, breaking the silence and gender culture of silence, in their own way to self-esteem, self-confidence, independent life, to enter the " joy and happiness".

《喜福会》观后感(英文版) The first time I saw the title of the film, the Joy Luck Club, I thought that it would be a film filed with joy, luck and happiness. However, out of my expectation, in the film, I saw many unpleasant things—conflicts, hardship, disappointment, sorrow, hurt, torture etc. Of course there were some moving parts, and fortunately, it was a happy ending. Anyway, I enjoyed it very much. It made me have a penetrating thinking. The Joy Luck Club tells about the conflicts between Chinese immigrant mothers and their American-raised daughters and their struggling to understand each other. The film shows us these topics: the misunderstanding of love between the mothers and the daughters, the clash between the generations and cultures, and the struggle for the women to fight for equity. Now I am going to show you my understanding of them, emphasizing on the first topic. 1.what's the cultural differences? answer : These four cases reveal that the women begin to release themselves from the restrains of being oppressed by the men and the old-fashioned thoughts as well as some Chinese traditional characters. Eventually, the women find their true value and win their own happiness. Maybe it is a common Phenomenonin america, In the United States, multicultural so-called, is to maintain the new patternconsistent sub culture and the mainstream culture, in essence, is nothing but acover up the trick, is a cover for the sub cultural assimilation and psychologicalaggression. So, like other minority women, Chinese women have only to regain the original self, to break the silence and gender culture of silence, self-esteem, self-confidence, independence in their own way to face life, to eventually enter the "joy and blessing" of the realm. 2.What impress me mostly? Answer: Take Waverly and her mother Lindo as an example. Waverly tries her best to please Lindo in everything. Whether her mother approves or not becomes the master of all her choice. Even Waverly marries a Chinese man because Lindo likes Chinese, while she doesn’t love. Waverly doesn’t understand why Lindo disapprove or criticize whatever she has done. On the other side, Lindo thinks that her daughter is ashamed of her, which is her continual internal injury after Waverly’s winning that chess contest, when Waverly shouted to Lindo if Lindo wanted to show off, won the chest by herself. Every time, Lindo’s disagreement with or indifference to Waverly directly results from the thought that Waverly feels it shameful to be her daughter. Both

The Joy Luck Club The author of The Joy Luck Club is Amy Tan, who was born in Oakland, California, in 1952. Besides this book, she hasalso written other famous novels, such as The Kitchen God's Wife, The Hundred Secret Senses, The Bonesetter's Daughter and Saving Fish From Drowning. In response to the widely held opinion that she writes with a social aim—to portray the Chinese American experience. Through her writing, Tan approaches issues that are universally applicable to all groups of people. She explores themes of family and memory, as well as the conflicts of culture that arise in so many American communities. The Joy Luck Club contains sixteen interwoven stories about conflicts between Chinese immigrant mothers and their American—raised daughters. The novel consists of four sections, each section contains four separative narratives. In the first section, four mothers, Lindo, Ying ying, and An mei, recollect their relationship with their nature mothers clearly one by one. However, their daughters' recollection of them will never be so clear. In the second section, these daughters, Waverly, Jing mei,Lena, and Rose recollect their childhood relationship with their mothers respectively. They tell their childhood stories so clearly and touchingly that it can powerfully prove what their mothers worry about at least is partially unnecessary and unimportant. In the third section, the four daughters narrate their adult dilemmas—troubles in marriages and with their careers. Although they believe that their mothers' antiquated ideas do not have anything concerned about their own American lifestyles, but their search for solutions inevitably brings them back to their relationships with the older generation. In the final section, the mothers come up with some practical solutions and support their daughters, in the process learning more about themselves.

My Reflection of The Joy Luck Club I wonder that when seeing the name The Joy Luck Club most people would treat it as a story filled with happiness and love. In fact, besides love, it is also about the cultural conflicts between four daughters and their mothers. The film is based on the best seller by Amy Tan of the same name. It shows us the lives of four Chinese women who were immigrants to America during the 1950s. As a mother, each of them has a lot of problems with their daughter because of cultural conflicts. The misunderstanding of love between the mothers and their American-raised daughters, the clash between the generations and cultures, and the struggle for the women to fight for equity touch every audience’s heart. Though I was also attracted by something with extensiveness——I want to talk about some points about the language. I had learnt that what are high context communication and low context communication and what is different between them. The former is one in which most of the information is internalized in a person, while very little in the coded, explicit, transmitted part of the message——we must guess what the real meaning of the words is; while the other is the opposite. Chinese just the stands for the former and English is the representative of the latter. An interesting scene in the movie just shows us this. When Waverly’s boyfriend Richie had a dinner with Waverly’s big Chinese family for the first time, he made some stupid mistakes. He brought his typical American habit when the they were eating and he couldn’t understand what Lindo( Waverly’s mother) mean when she said “ He has an a ppetite”. When Lindo brought a dish which she was very proud of, as a Chinese, she still said some formulae that the dish was not salty enough and it was too bad to eat; that suggested that everyone around the table should speak highly of her dish after their first degustation; while Richie didn’t understand that Chinese all like to be modest and he criticized Lindo’s cooking, just saying what he thought in his mind directly. What Richie did led to a very embarrassing atmosphere in the dinner and made Lindo very disappointed and

The first time I saw this title of film, I felt it must be a enjoyable film which filled with love, luck, happiness, but out of my expectation, in this film I saw so much unpleasant things such as conflicts, diseases, violence, sorrow, hardship and disappoint. I was feeling very pity for thiese charactors in this film because living that society women were not equar to men, this deem to happen many unforturnate things to women and make women’s lives tragedy. Associate with the modern society, almost every woman to make their daughter succeed. They always make their daughter do as their advices and ignore their daughters’ feeling. Each daughter unwilling to obey. Once a time, my mother told me to learn to how to acting before audience, I was so afried that I ususlly went out to play with my classmates instead of attending the class which make my mother lose her temper. She said angrilyYou make me so disappoint that from now on you can do whatever you like. Hearing these words I was rather happy at that time, but several years later I am feeling regret espeacially now, because I realize that everyting my mother did is making the preparetion for my future life. Now I just want to say sorry to my mother.
