In the United States today, a large group of people want a college education. However, everyone is not able to attend a four-year college. Many four-year colleges are already too crowed. To give more people a chance to get a college education, some cities and towns have built junior colleges.

The junior college offers a two-year courses of study in a wide range(范围)of subjects. It prepares some young people to go on to a four-year college. It trains others for jobs in business, government, or industry.

Hank Viscardi was 26 years old when he put on his first pair of long trousers and his first pair of shoes. For the first time he saw himself as he had always wanted to be a full five feet eight inches tall.

Hank had been born without legs. Until he was seven, his world was a world of repeated operations. At last he had not legs, but stumps(残肢)that could be fitted with a kind of special boots.

Out of the hospital, Hank often found people staring at him with cruel interest. Children laughed at him and called him ―Ape Man‖ because his arms dragged(拖)on the ground.

He went to school like other boys. His grades were good and he needed only eight years instead of the usual twelve.

After graduation, Hank worked his way through college. He swept floors, waited on table, or worked in one of the college offices. During all this busy life, Hank had been moving around on his stumps. But one day the doctor told him even the stumps were not going to last much longer. Hank would soon have to use a wheel chair. Hank felt himself go cold all over. However, the doctor said there was a chance that he could be fitted with artificial(人造的)legs.

Finally a leg maker was found and the day came when Hank stood up before the mirror and saw himself for the first time, five feet eight inches tall.

But this was not the end yet. He had to learn to use his new legs. Again and again he marched the length of the room, and marched back again. There were times when he fell down on the floor, but he pulled himself up and went back to the endless marching. He went out on the street. He climbed the stairs and learned to dance. He built a boat and learned to sail it.

When World War Ⅱcame, he talked the Red Cross into giving him a job. He took the regular training. He marched and drilled along with the other soldiers. Few knew that he was legless. This was the true story of Hank Viscardi, the man without legs.

Americans usually make allowance for(宽容)non-native speakers who have some trouble understanding English. But they become annoyed when a person pretends to understand but doesn’t really and then creates problems because of misunderstanding what is said. No one wants soap when he asks for soup. So if you don’t understand what is said to you, admit it and polite ly ask the person to repeat or explain.

Second, it is quite rude to talk with a friend in your native language and leave your American friends standing there feeling stupid because they can’t understand the conversation. The Americans may also feel that you are talking about them or saying something you don’t want them to hear. If you must switch to your native language to explain something to a non-English-speaking friend, at least translate for your American friends so they don’t feel left out.

Learn just a few more polite English expressions, and you’ll be ready to face the world of Americans with confidence. The polite response(反应)to a compliment(赞扬)about your looks or your work is ―Thank you.‖ (A smile and a nod is not enough.) The response to ―Thank you.‖ is, of course, ―You’re welcome.‖ If someone asks, ―How are you?‖ don’t give your medical history. Just say, ―Fine, thanks. How are you?‖ Finally, what should you say when someone sneezes(打喷嚏)? It may not seem logical, but the correct response is ―God bless you.‖ That’s about all there is to it. Now that you’ve learned this general knowledge of manners in the USA,you’re ready to be polite in English, Let’s hope your American friends will be just as polite. 47.Which of the following does the writer not refer to?

A.Don’t let any of your friends feel left out in the course of conversation.

B.Ask for repetition once you fail to follow American natives.

C.Never serve your guest soap if he actually asks for soup.

D.Politely thank the person for his kindness when you’re praised by him. 48.In the first paragraph, the underlined word ―annoyed‖ means .

A.rather angry B.very impolite

C.quite unfriendly D.fairly pleased

49.The passage is mainly about in the U. S. A.

A.the importance of good manners

B.the general knowledge of English

C.the skill in daily conversations

D.the good manners in communication

50.When you talk with someone in your native language, your American friend may feel .

A ◆Welwitschia mirabilis Title: the world’s most resistant plant It’s not pretty to look at, but welwits chia mirabilis is unique. It consists of only two leaves and a strong stem with roots. Two leaves continue to grow and the stem thickens and can grow to be almost 2 meters high and 8 meters wide. Its lifespan is 400 to 1,500 years. It can survive up to five years with no rain. The plant is said to be very tastyeither raw or baked in hot ashes. ◆Dionaea muscipula Title: the Venus Fly Trap Dionaea muscipula is the most famous carnivorous(肉食性的) plant due to the active and efficient nature of its unique trap. It may be famous, but it’s also threatened. It produces a short leaf that forms two sides of a trap. Each side contains some sensitive hairs. When it is touched two to three times, the trap will shut in less than a second, fast enough to catch flies and other insects. The leaf, once closed, produces some enzymes(酶) that slowly dissolve the insects and supply the plant with food. ◆Rafflesia arnoldii Title: the world’s largest flower Rafflesia arnoldii, the largest flower in the world, is an exotic and rare plant. The flower is 3 feet across and weighs 15-24 pounds. However, you wouldn’t want to grow it in your garden. In a rainforest-type environment, it gives off a most unpleasant smell, which is somewhat like rotten meat. This is why it is often called the Corpse Plant by some natives of Indonesia where it comes. Its flowers only last for three days to a week. ◆Euphorbia obese Title: the Baseball Plant Euphorbia obese is known as the Baseball Plant. Over-harvesting by plant collectors for its interesting and curious appearance has severely reduced the wild population. However, it has become very common now. By growing euphorbia obese in large numbers, many gardens have been working to ensure that the plants being traded and sold among plant collectors are not wild plants. 21. From the passage, we know that __________. A. welwitschia mirabilis is very beautiful B. dionaea muscipula is famous for its trap C. rafflesia arnoldii feels like rotten meat 1
