the passage you have just read.

( A )

Last week, I bought an alarm system for about $450. It consisted of a control

unit with three small units. I put the control unit in the sitting room and fastened the other units by the front door, back door and living room windows. The instructions told us to choose three numbers, so we chose 491, the last three numbers of our

telephone number.

Now I must explain how the alarm works:

1.There is a power siren in the control unit. It makes a very loud noise.

2.Each of the small units sends out beams or rays in different directions. If

anything moves, it breaks a beam. This sends a signal to the control unit. The siren (警报器) makes a noise which you can hear 50 metres away.

3.When we go to bed, I press the three buttons numbered 4, 9 and 1. Then we have 30 seconds to get out of the room before the alarm starts to work.

That night I slept soundly because I was sure that no burglar could get into

our house. However, at about 2:10 a.m., I woke up and heard the siren.

“There must be a burglar in the house,” Mary said. “What shall we do?”

“I’ll go and see who’s there,” I said. “Stay here. Don’t make a noise.”

I went downstairs quietly. When I reached the living room, I switched on my torch and looked round the room. Then I turned the light on. I switched the siren off and searched the rooms downstairs. There was nothing wrong except that the back door

was unlocked. I locked it, re-set the alarm and went back to bed.

About an hour later, the alarm started again. I jumped out of bed, fell over

a chair in the dark and bumped i nto the bedroom door. Mary woke up and started hitting me with a torch. “Hey! Wait a minute!” I whispered. “It’s only me. I’m going downstairs to see what’s wrong.”

I went down into the living room and listened for a moment. The only sound I

could hear was the siren. I turned on the light and then switched the siren off. As I did so, I glanced across at the curtains in front of the windows. I saw a house lizard (a kind of small animal) disappear behind the curtains.

“Oh!” I said to myself. “That’s our burglar.”

When the lizard moved, it started the siren. I guessed that the alarm had been

made in Europe, where there are no house lizards.

Well, I won’t finish this story but if you want an alarm system free of charge, let me k now. I’ll send you ours. We bought a dog this morning. It knows the difference between a lizard and a burglar.

65. The writer bought an alarm system to _______.

A. make sure that he got up early every day

B. warn him when there were lizards in his house

C. frighten burglars and tell him that somebody had got into the house

D. make Mary feel safe to live in the large room

66. If the writer set the alarm and remained in the room for more than half a minute, ______.

A. nothing would happen

B. the control unit would not work

C. the siren would make a noise

D. the dog would bark

67. The purpose of the writer in writing the passage is to ______.

A. tell us that the alarm system doesn’t work

B. tell us an interesting experience

C. show us how the alarm system works

D. make it clear that he wants to give away his alarm system

Dear sir,

While “Surfing” the Internet I found myself reading your publication, People’s Daily Online, for the first time. As a USA citizen I found the publication’s “English” edition to be interesting reading, brief but informative, very well thought out and quite readable. I now consider this publication to be a

must read publicatio n for me. Thank you for having it “Online” for those of us

who want to read it.

I have no knowledge what so ever of any Chinese language or dialect. The

translation you have provided is good and important for foreigners, such as I, to

be able to learn more about China from the Chinese. I thought that it only correct

of me t o get in touch with you with my thanks and a well meaning and humble suggestion

in English usage.

One o f your news items headlines read: “Chinese Premier (总理) Kicked off Spring Festival in Guizhou”. When I first read it I thought that it meant that the Premier of China was kicked off of the Spring Festival in Guizhou! I could not even imagine that happening so I read the story to find out what had really happened. Might I

suggest that my confusion as to the news articles content would not have existed

by a small change in only one word’s form. Use “Kicks” instead of “Kicked”. With this small change in word usage made, the Headline now communicates the story intent. With the change made, it would now read “Chinese Premier Kicks Off Spring Festival in Guizhou”.

It is my thought that human languages fall short of being able to allow us human beings to truly communicate even in the best of face to face conversations. So

anything I could do to help a fellow human communicate clearly is a personal must

to me. To help you understand my humble intention I must ask the question: “If we don’t kindly help each other to communicate how will we ever get to know each other as brothers and sisters of this good Earth?” English is the only language that I

know and I often find myself realizing that I can’t communicate very well with it myself.

It is not my wish to have caused the Headline Author any trouble, loss of face

or to cause their employment to be placed in danger. If I thought that would happen I would not send the second part, the headline correction, of my letter to you. I

only do so to help my Chinese neighbors who have taken a great amount of time and

effort to know my language, US English, to now know it a little tiny bit better.

Thank you for your time and efforts.

Aloha (问候) from one of your neighbors in Hawaii,

Yours,

Gerry Wilder

The results of a new survey in Brazil show income dropped last year for both

rich and poor.

Since 1967, the Brazilian Institute for Statistics and Geography, the IBGE, has published a statistical survey of Brazil every year. Among other things, the comprehensive survey measures changes in the population’s income, education, fertility (人口出生率), housing, and other social indicators.

The IBGE’s latest survey, published late last week, shows the income for

Brazilians in 1999 dropped by 7% actually, after discounting inflation. This drop

affected Brazilians from all walks of life, and was the result of a series of

financial crises which began in 1997.

Until then, prosperity had been slowly rising in Brazil after the creation of

a new, stable currency in 1994. But various economic crises, including a currency

devaluation (贬值) in early 1999, eroded(侵蚀) these gains--- and this was reflected in the Statist ical Institute’s latest survey.

This income loss has slightly reduced the huge concentration of wealth in Brazil. Numerous studies by the World Bank and other organizations show Brazil is among the world’s most unequal nations in terms of income distribution(分配). But the IBGE survey says there has been a continuous decline in wealth concentration of the top ten percent--- from 51% in 1989 to 45.7% last year.

Yet Ms. Guerra admits that the figures are still high.

“In reality our results indicate that the concentration of wealth in this

country is quite high --- but quality of life does not just depend on income, there are other indicators that reflect this --- such as health care, educational level, etc. So income distribution, while important, does not by itself reflect the whole reality of quality of life in a country.”

And it is in education, health and other social indicators that the IBGE study shows some i mprovement. More Brazilian children are in school, Brazilians are living longer, and families are becoming smaller. The survey says Brazil’s fertility rate for women, for example, is down to just over 2% --- compared to almost 3% in 1991.

Ms. Guerra says this means, on average, there are two children per family --- which is a positive development for Brazil.

76. Financial crises in Brazil began in _______.

A. 1994

B. 1995

C. 1996

D. 1997

77. The value of Brazilian currency _______ in early 1999.

A. increased

B. decreased

C. remained stable

D. fluctuated

78. The wealth concentration of the top ten percent has dropped by about _____ in

the last ten years.

A. 1%

B. 3%

C. 5%

D. 7%

79. Which of the following does not reflect the improvement of the quality of life

in Brazil?

A. income

B. health

C. education

D. lower fertility

rate

The United States will introduce a new and comprehensive(综合的) exam for students who seek to study in America and other English-speaking countries, Xin Hua News Agency reported from New York.

81 ___________________

The exam, which stands for a great change from the current English level test,

was disclosed by Theresa Chang-whei Jen, associate director of the International

Service of the US C ollege Board, America’s leading educational organization. “The Advanced Placement International English Language(APIEL) will be offered for the

first time throughout the world on May 10, 2002,” said Jen.

82 ___________________

However, the APIEL is a strange title to most Chinese students, and it is unlikely

to soon gain the similarity of other already existing exams, such as the TOEFL(Test of English as a Foreign Language), the GRE(Graduate Record Examination), or the

IELTS(International English Language Testing System). “I have never heard of such a test and I would prefer the IELTS as I need another exam,” said Xu Jingyan, a graduating student from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, who

wants to study in England and has already taken the TOEFL. Most of Xu’s classmates have never heard of the APIEL. “The APIEL is designed for international students

who wish to get university studies in English-speaking countries, including the

United States, Bri tain, Canada and Australia”, said Jen.83 ___________________

The APIEL has been adopted, said Jen, because the TOEFL c an no longer accurately reflect the abilities of students of use the English language comprehensively in

an academic environment. Xin Hua reported that a fairly large number of foreign

students who earned high scores in TOEFL exam turned out to be very ordinary

educational performers after admission.

84 ___________________

“Compared w ith the TOEFL, the APIEL measures a student’s ability to read, write, speak and understand English through testing his or her skills in listening comprehension, speaking with accuracy(精确) and resourcefulness, and writing with clarity and fluency(流畅),” Jen said.

III. Reading Comprehension Section B Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read. B Kettlebells do not hurt people. People do. A kettlebell will get your respect – the easy way or the hard way. Here is the easy way. 1. Get a medical clearance. Get clearance, especially from an orthopedist and a cardiologist. The latter is no joking matter, since kettlebell training can be extremely intense. 2. Always be aware of your surroundings. Find a training area with a non-slippery surface on which you are not afraid to drop a kettlebell. The area must be clear of objects you might trip over – including other kettlebells – or that you might hit with a kettlebell. There should be no people or animals in a radius where you could injure them. 3. Train barefoot or wear shoes with a flat, thin sole and room for the toes to spread. Training barefoot is superior for health and performance reasons. If you must wear shoes, wear Converse Chuck Taylors, Vibram Five Fingers, or similar shoes that have thin soles and do not pinch the toes together. You have sensory receptors on the bottoms of your feet that make you stronger and improve balance and coordination. Wearing traditional shoes diminishes the ability of these receptors to work properly, and therefore inhibits performance and can increase the risk of injury. Go native. 4. Never contest for space with a kettlebell. Do not try to save a rep that has gone wrong. Guide the kettlebell to fall harmlessly, and move out of the way if necessary. And remember, quick feet are happy feet. 5. Practice all safety measures at all times. Respect every kettlebell, even the lightest one. Always use perfect form picking up and setting down a kettlebell. The set is not over until the bell is safely parked.
