Women in The Modern World
Women are playing an increasingly important role in society today.
Having repeatedly demonstrated ability in roles traditionally held by men,
they are showing just how much they can contribute.
No longer can it be said that women's place is only in the home raising children and keeping house.
Throughout society, capable women are proving that they are valuable to their communities.
With the changes in their social role, women's position in the family has improved as well.
As a provider for the family, the wife no longer is obedient to her husband,
but instead, exerts an influence on the children and family affairs equal to that of her husband.
Moreover, the husband must now assume some of the responsibilities of maintaining a household,
such as cooking, cleaning. And other such jobs around the house.
In spite of these changes, the liberation of women has not been completely realized.
It is still difficult for women to get certain jobs like top management positions.
Because some fields is dominated by men,
many capable women have perhaps chosen alternative careers rather
than go through the difficulty of trying to break into certain professions.
Quality-oriented Education
In the past,a"good student"referred to one who was only good at studies.
For example,in the school, what the school master cared about was how well the student did in his school subjects.
It did not matter whether a student had good health or not as long as he got the top marks.
At home, for another example, before leaving for school,
the parents would again and again tell their children to study hard and try to get good grades.
As a result, many students showed little interest in anything else.
Now the criteria of a good student are changing.
As society is developing, people have now come to realize that the traditional standard
of a good student is too limited.
Today,in addition to being good at studies,
a student is also encouraged to cultivate interests in many other things, such as sports, paiting, and music.
In short,by the new criteria,
a good student should not only achieve good marks in academic subjects,
but also have varied interests and abilities.
Generally speaking, the criteria of a good student are changing for the better.
For one thing, the growth of one's personality depends on a variety
of factors,in addition to that of academic learning.
For another, the development of modern civilization requires that education should lay emphasis
not only on school subjects but on the ability to solve problems as well.
Therefore, this change is beneficial both to the student and to society as a whole.
Advertisements and Commercials
Advertisements and commercials appear everywhere in modern society.Nowhere can you fail to see them.
Driving on the highway, you see huge advertising signs by the roadside.
When a truck passes by,you see advertisements on it.
Newspapers and magazines set aside much room for advert

isements.
The radio waves reach far and wide, broadcasting commercials to people,
while televisons make commercials vivid and visible.
You might even think you are almost drowned in advertisements and commercials.
In order to attract more customers, advertisers will go to extremes.
They do their utmost to appeal to people's five senses.
Apart from the old trick of using images of beautiful girls,
they also get movie stars and famous athletes in their commercials.
They take pains to bring into full play the effect of light, sound, color, film and performance.
The most noticeable thing is the terms of propaganda,
extolling a certain commodity as ranking first among equals or being a winner of a prize or golden medal.
Although advertisements and commercials enable you to make decisions quickly, sometimes they cause a lot of trouble.
For example, television programs are frequently interrupted by commercials for at least a few minutes.
These interruptions ruin good movies and exciting television shows,
which may make the audience's patience wear off and drive them crazy.
Newspapers and magazines set aside valuable spaces for ads,
which could otherwise be used for carrying more useful content.
The most troublesome is the boastful and showy style of the propaganda,
which often makes people doubt whether the commodity is really good.
Entering Universities
Universities are the place for training scientists, engineers, doctors and teachers.
As institutions of higher learning, universities award degrees to students
who have mastered the required knowledge in their majors.
The university diploma is essential for a person's future career.
For these reasons, nearly all young people are eager to enter universities.
The present number of universities in China can't meet people's need for higher education.
Every year only a small number of middle school graduates are lucky enough to gain admission.
The majority of them are kept away from universities.
That accounts for an acute competition.
Those who are not admitted to universities should not lose heart.
One may study well by himself and develop abilities in the working post.
If possible, one may attend correspondence courses and other courses or classes for adult higher education.
There are many examples of people who achieve success by self-study.
Generation Gap
Nowadays, there is often a lack of understanding between parents and children.
Children always complain that their parents are out of date.
while parents can't approve of what their children say and do.
Thus,a big generation gap is formed.
The gap remains wide for many reasons.
Children want to be free to choose their own friends, select their own classes in school,
plan their own future, earn and spend their own money,
and generally run their own life in a more independent way then many parents allow.
Also, young children wish to be understood by their parents,
but most parents don't quite understand their children.
They re

gard it as their responsibility to teach their offspring traditional beliefs.
They want them to be obedient and do well in school.
Therefore, misunder standings often arise from parents'tendency to interfere in children's daily activities.
In my opinion, most problems between parents and children could be solved
by joint efforts of both sides to enhance mutual understanding.
China's Entry into The WTO
China's entry into the WTO is widely expected.
However,as it's double edged,
it will bring us opportunities as well as challenges.
Most people cherish the opportunities and give it a warm welcome.
First, they believe it will quicken China's restructuring,
especially of industries and accelerate its overall economic reform.
Besides,it will lure much more foreign capital to China,
and by setting up more joint ventures and foreign funded enterprises,
create countless jobs for job seekers.
Most important of all,it will nourish the textile industry and benefit tourism.
However, other fear the great risks and challenges, and therefore, extend a cold welcome.
First, they elieve that it will bring crushing WTO pressure on car, telecom and many other industries.
To make matters worse,
they fear that the great pressure will make many non-profit companies,
even the large-and-medium-sized loss-making state-owned enterprises go bankrupt,
leaving about 30 million people jobless or laid off.
Worst of all,it will intensify the cut-throat competition in the global economic markets.
As for me,I firmly believe the opportunities far outweigh the challenges.
As the fiercer competition will make the industries and agriculture mature in the global markets.
The post-WTO China will weave an even brighter future in the next century.
Develop Western Regions
The large scale development of west China is of profound significance.
First,it will open a broad development space for central and eastern regions.
Besides,it's critical to China's overall economic rise.
What's more,it's the only effective way to decrease the imbalance of economic development
in the east and the west so as to revitalize our nation.
There are various reasons why the landlocked west has lagged behind in its economic development.
The chief reason,I think,is that the opening up policies enable the east to lure more foreign capital
and make a fantastic spur in its development.
As a result,it leaves the west far behind in its economic growth.
In addition, the west's unique unfavorable geographic positions greatly limit its development.
Therefore, the gaps between the west and the east have been widen since China's reform.
In fact, many regions in the west still remain comparatively underdeveloped.
To illustrate, most of the 30 million poor population,
who still have subsistence problems, live there.
Moreover, currently the per capita GDP in west China is only about 60% of national average.
And the vast west China makes less contribution to the nation's development.
If left unchange

d,the underdevelopment in the west will greatly affect overall prosperity and even social stability.
However, the western region development is a long-term systematic project.
It calls for tremendous efforts of several generations.
To sum up,our chief goal is to build west China with economic prosperity,
social progress, political stability and beautiful landscape.
Finally,I believe the west will catch up with the east in its economic development in the near future.
China's Foreign Investment
China's foreign investment has increased continually in the past 20 years.
It's reported that China has approved more than 350,000 foreign funded firms
with total contractual capital of US$ 641.7 billion.
Undoubtedly the use of foreign capital has greatly driven our economy.
It has helped to create many economic miracles such as Zhuhai and Shenzhen.
Although great changes have taken place in China partially due to the foreign investment,
yet,as a developing country,China still proves to be a great target for foreign capital.
And there's still potential for overseas entrepreneurs and foreign investors in many aspects.
To illustrate, they can still invest in agriculture, water conservation, energy,
telecommunications, raw materials or invest in environmental protection,
IT industries and newly arising high-tech industries, especially in western regions.
As is well known, absorbing foreign capital is important to our country's growth,
but how to attract more of it to push forward an all-round multilevel and broader opening up.
I think two factors are most important.
On the one hand,we should work out more favorable policies and adopt a series of incentives to lure more foreign capital.
On the other hand,we should further improve our soft investment environment.
Only in this way can we lure more foreign capital and push our door open wider.
Shopping on The Net
Nowadays the Internet is revolutionizing our globe and greatly facilitating our modern life.
As a matter of fact,we can do almost everything on the Net.
To illustrate,we can conduct E-business,advertise our products,
book an air ticket, buy and sell stocks, even hunt a new job on the Web.
Recently, shopping on the Net is gradually becoming popular in modern cities.
However, people take different attitudes towards the new way of shopping.
Some people who prefer shopping on the virtual shopping centers or the E-commerce portals,
hold that the new way of shopping has many advantages.
First, the web-stores can keep customers updated about the best selling products.
Besides, they can provide customers with a wider range of choices.
Most important of all,it is very convenient and time-saving.
People can stay at home shopping whatever they want online.
However, others who stick to shopping in the real-life stores have their reasons.
First, they argue that though time-saving,it's a little bit complicated to pay on the Web.
Besides, they think that customers can never rest assured
of the qual

ity of the commodities unless they see them with their own eyes.
Finally, they believe the best way to on guard against the fake
and poor quality commodities is to shop in the traditional way.
Therefore, they don't show any interest in shopping online.
However, more and more people will prefer shopping on the Web.
And it's believed that it will eventually be an irresistible trend of shopping in the twenty-first-century.
Holiday Economy
The lengthy holidays have caused unexpected great travel craze and brisk economic activities.
Holiday spending, however, adds fuel to the Chinese economy,
which in turn leads to the creation of a new term"Holiday Economy".
But,meanwhile it sparks a hot debate about it.
Some economists are in favor of the Holiday Economy.
They believe it has many advantages.
First,tourism-based Holiday Economy will raise consumption,
up spending and therefore, help to spur the domestic demand.
In addition,it benefits tourism,transportation,catering,
hotels and service industries and enables them to thrive during holidays,
which in turn adds fuel to the overall economic growth.
However, others overstate its disadvantages and hold that it brings undeniable problems.
First, the travel craze puts a heavy burden on the traffic system, causing serious traffic jams.
Besides, thousands and thousands of tourists flood scenic spots, jamming railways stations and airports,
causing some overcrowding and safety problems.
Therefore,we shouldn't neglect the new problems.
I believe its advantages for outweigh its disadvantages.
After all,it greatly benefits our overall economy.
Finally,I suggest the government take effective measures to solve the aforementioned problems.
Only in this way can the Holiday Economy develop in a sound way.
The Merging of Universities
The merging of universities means a coalition of universities.
Nowadays, there's a tidal wave of mergers across China.
Many universities are merging at a great rate.
Even the first-rate university in China,Beijing University, together with Beijing Medical University,
has just merged into a new expanded Beijing University.
According to statistics, between 1992 and 2000,490 universities merged into 204.
However,what's the purpose of merging,and what's the mergers'prospect?
There are two main purposes for their merging.
First, they merge to restructure our higher education management system and promote the present education reform.
Second, they merge to strengthen their composite strength and make more competitive expanded universities,
with characteristics and style of their own,so as to confront the challenge of the new century.
With better equipment and more qualified teaching staff, the mergers'prospect will be very brilliant.
Some of them will improve their teaching quality.
Others will gradually build up their fame by producing reputable graduates.
A few of them,by drawing top-quality professors from the world, may develop into world-class universities.
And we be

lieve merging universities will give China a Cambridge or a Harvard in the future.
