Now I have a 2.5-mile run every morning. I drink milk and eat fresh fruit and vegetables instead of chocolate. Running and healthy eating help to build me up. We should eat more fruit and vegetables and less meat. A cup of milk and an egg a day can help make us strong. Different foods help us in different ways. If we eat too little or too much food, or if we choose the wrong food, it can make us sick. It’s necessary for us to have healthy eating habits.

A Short History of the Weekend

Before 1800, many people spent one day a week at church. This was called

a“holy day”in England. On that day, people rested and prayed.

In the early 1800s, Sunday was the“holy day”. But many workers played games and had fun on that day. And then they didn’t go to work on Monday mornings because they felt too tired. In the U.S.A, workers called them“blue Mondays”.

To solve the problem of“blue Monday”, in 1874, Saturday afternoon became a holiday in England. At one o’clock everyone stopped working. This was the beginning of the idea of the weekend in England. By 1930, most American offices were closed on Saturday afternoons. By 1940, offices and factories in the U.S. A. were closed all day on Saturday, and the two-day weekend began.

Dear Celia,

How time files! I miss you very much. How I wish to stay with you! I'm a stranger here, you know. I have so many problems in this new city. I need your advice.

When my mother told me that we were moving to a big city. I was really excited to be getting my own beautiful bedroom. But here, I have to get used to everything

new. The city is noisier nad more crowded. The roads here are not as clean as those in our hometown. The food is not as delicious as our Sichuan food, either. Even the people here are not as friendly as you. I try to be friends with my classmates, but they don't seem to accept me. I try to join in activities of many kinds. But no one wants to be my partner. It makes me sad. I'm disappointed and lonely. I'm afraid I can't fit in right now. I didn't pass my English exam this time because of the pirated book. I told my sister about it. But she didn't care. I want to live as happily as before. I hope to get your advice soon.

Please give my best wishes to your parents.

Yours,

Beth

He does not want to hurt his parents by being angry all the time. He knows that his brother would not want him to be unhappy, so he tries to enjoy being with his friends and family. He goes to movies and plays sports instead of staying in his room.

Colors and Feelings

Our clothes can make us feel better about ourselves. Wearing different colors of clothes shows and affects our feelings.

Normally when we are sad, we wear dark-colored clothes. But when we are happy, we often choose to wear bright-colored clothes. Our choice of color shows how we are feeling.

If we wear different colors of clothes, it can change our feelings. Here are some examples: Suppose we are feeling sad. If we wear black, we may begin to feel worse. However, if we wear green, red or yellow, we may begin to feel better. And orange will make us happier, white will make us helpful, brown, better at learning, blue, quieter and calmer, and so on.

So, if we aren't feeling our best, we can always try out some clothes of different colors. If one color can't make us feel better, maybe another will.

What am I going to do?”Sweat was pouring down his face.“I can't speak any Chinese, how can I ask for help?”Slowly he walked toward a large rock beside the road, and then he sat down sadly. He didn't raise his head until someone slapped him on the back.“There you are! How nice to see you!”said Kangkang. What Do North American People Wear?

How do North Americans dress? You may ask what North American people wear on special days. In fact, there are very few formal days, though there are some festivals such as Christmas, Halloween, Thanksgiving Day and Easter. What the people there wear depends on their likes and dislikes. Some people prefer to dress formally and some prefer to dress informally. On birthdays, some children wear paper party hats. At Christmas, some people wear Santa Claus hats. In winter, Canadian people usually wear coats, gloves, boots and hats. It is the same in northern China. Generally, people in Canada and the United States share the same style of dressing, while many South American people have the same way of dressing as Australians.

Page2

Why Do We Wear Clothes?

People first started wearing clothes to protect themselves from the sun, wind, rain, and cold.

It is said that many years ago the first types of clothes were made of animal skins. Today we use different materials. But clothes do more than keep us warm. Our clothes can also tell about who we are, our culture, life and hobbies. For example, if we like to wear yellow or pink clothes, we are usually active and easy-going. If we like black and blue, we may be quiet people. There is a saying,“You are what you wear.”

Page3

Our parents chose clothes for us when we were little kids. But now, most of us can dress for ourselves. Girls want to look attractive and boys want to look handsome. They usually choose their favorite clothes. Very few people don’t want to look nice.

Of course, most people dress for their work. My mother is a doctor so she has no choice, she has to wear a uniform at work. She can wear what she likes only at home. My father likes sportswear, but he always wears a uniform because he is a policeman. I like bright colors and I usually wear casual clothes. I only wear school uniforms at school meetings.

So it is necessary for us to have different kinds of clothes. When we are at school or at work, we must wear uniforms. When we are at home or stay with our friends, we can wear what we like. But we must remember: different occasions. different clothes.

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

A lot of English people have three names: a first name, a middle name and a family name. their family name comes last. For example, my full name is James Allan Green. Green is my family name. I have two given names. My first name is James, and my middle name is Allan. To many people, the meaning of a name is important. My name is James. James means daiti, and Allan means hexie.

People don’t user their middle names very much. So “John Henry Brown”is usually “John Brown”. People also don’t use Mr., Mrs., Ms or Miss before their first names. They usually use them with their last names. We can say John Brown or Mr. Brown, but we can never say Mr. John.

I think this is different from Chinese names. In China, the first name is

the family name, and the last name is the given name. For example, “Zhou Jian”puts his family name “Zhou” before his given name “Jian”.

Why do people call me Jim? My name is James, but Jim is short for James. So just call me Jim!

How about Bai Feili?” All of Phillip’s friends begin to laugh. Wang Jingjing says, “No, we can’t give him that name.” Phillip asks. “What does Bai Feili mean?”“It means a waste of time,” says Sun Yu with a laugh.“Ha, ha! I don’t want that name.” Phillip says. Jiang Wei asks, “How about Feilipu Beikeman?”“No, that’s too long. I would like a Chinese name like yours.”Can you help Phillip find a Chinese name?

When they get to the market, they can’t find any oranges, and the apples are too green. “What are we going to buy now?” asks Katy. “Hey, what’s that big round fruit over there?”asks Jill. “I don’t know. Let’s ask the salesgirl.”“What do you call this?”“Youzi,” answers the girl. “Why don’t we buy one?” asks Jill. “OK. We’re going to have lots of fun hiking and eating a new find of fruit!”

Unit 3 Autumn festivals

Read this e-mail from Lucy to her friend in the USA.

Hi Jo,

Thanks for your e-mail. You want to know more about China? Tomorrow is going to be the Mid-autumn Festival. It’s like our Thanksgiving. Families get together. It usually comes in September or October. This year it’s going to be on September 15th. On that day families eat a big dinner, like we do. They also eat mooncakes. These are small round cakes. They taste a little like our pies. Many families eat their dinner outside in the open air. The moon looks brighter and rounder on this day. In America, we call this moon the Harvest Moon. Chinese people often talk about their families and tell the story of Chang’e. I’m going to a friend’s home for Mid-autumn Festival.

Unit 4 On the farm

TWO FARMS

Ji Wei lives on a farm. The farm is not big. His parents grow rice and wheat. They don’t use animals to do farm work any more. Today they use a tractor. It works faster and better. After Ji Wei does his work in the fields, he likes to sit and look at the blue sky and the green hills. He thinks the country is more beautiful than the city. In the city, he can’t hear the animals. In the country,

he can hear birds singing and sheep bleating.

John agrees with Ji Wei. John’s family lives on a farm too. They grow corn and wheat. He thinks their corn is the most delicious. He often sits and listens to the animals. John also likes the country better than the city. On his farm, there is a small lake. John often goes fishing here in summer, and skating there in winter. John likes to play with his dog, Cody. Cody is a very interesting dog. He likes to follow people. When they stop, he stops. When they walk, he walks. John thinks Cody is the best dog of all.

UNIT 5 Shall we go to the zoo?

There is a zoo in our city. My parents often take me there on holidays. I like animals. I have a lot of toy animals in my room. In the zoo I can see tigers, elephants, monkeys, pandas, bears, snakes and many other animals. Some animals are friendly, but some are not. Tigers, bears

and some snakes are dangerous. That is why they have to stay

in cages. But I do not think it is good for animals to stay in cages. They should be free. The animals in cages cannot be happy.

Tigers usually live in forests and mountains. They can run very fast. They catch and eat small animals like rabbits and deer, but now they live in small rooms. They have nothing to do every day. So they walk round and round in the cages, and they want to get out. When they are tired, they sleep. I feel sorry for them.

I think the most interesting animal in the zoo is the dolphin. I like watching them swim and jump. They swim fast and they jump very high. They can play with a ball. They can stand up and “walk” on water! They are very friendly to people. If you fall into the water and

can’t swim, they may come up to help you.
