INSTANT COLOUR TV

In 1962 there was only one TV channel in Sweden, and it broadcast in black and white. The station’s technical expert, Kjell Stensson, appeared on the news to announce that thanks to a newly developed technology, all viewers could now quickly and easily transform their existing sets to display color reception. All they had to do was pull a nylon stocking over their TV screen, and they would begin to see their favorite shows in color. Reportedly, hundreds of thousands of people were taken in. When a rather dirty, poorly dressed person kneels at your feet and puts out his hands to beg for a few coins, do you hurry on, not knowing what to do, or do you feel sad and hurriedly hand over some money? What should our attitude to beggars be? There can be no question that the world is full of terribly sad stories. It must be terrible to have no idea where our next meal is going to come from. It seems cruel not to give some money to beggars.

Certainly, most of the world’s great religions order us to be open-hearted and share what we have with those less fortunate than ourselves. But has the world changed? Maybe what was morally right in the old days, when one knew exactly who in the village had suffered misfortune and needed help, is no longer the best idea. Quite a few people will not give anything to beggars. Let us look at their arguments.

First, some believe that many city beggars dress up on purpose to look pitiable and actually make a good living from begging. Giving to beggars only encourages this sort of evil. Secondly, there is the worry that the money you give will be spent on beer, wine or drugs. Thirdly, there is the opinion that there is no real excuse for begging. One might be poor, but that is no reason for losing one’s sense of pride and self—dependence.

Related to this is the opinion that the problem should be dealt with by the government rather than ordinary people. Some people think beggars should go to the local government department and receive help.

It is hard to come to any final conclusion; there are various cases and we must deal with them differently. A few coins can save a life in some situations, and even if the money is wasted, that does not take away the moral goodness of the giver.

60.The passage is mainly about .

A.moral deeds of people. B.religious activities of the church.

C.We don’t meet with those who need help any more.

D.Now it is the government’s duty to help the beggars.

62.Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?

A.Some people dress up to pretend to be beggars.

B.Some beggars use the money to buy drugs.

C.Some beggars have no excuse for begging.

D.Some beggars want money to help their children go to school.

63.In the last paragraph, the writer thinks that it is hard to come to any final conclusion, because ______.

A.there are so many beggars B.the cases can be so different

C.there is so much money wasted D.there are so many different arguments

C

Chinese parents are very generous when it comes to educating their children. Not caring about the money, parents often send their children to the best schools or even abroad to England, the US or Australia. They also want their children to take extra-courses activities where they will either learn a musical instrument or ballet, or other classes that will give them a head start in life. The Chinese believe that the more expensive an education is, the better it is. So parents will spend unreasonable amount of money on education. Even poor couples will buy a computer for their son or daughter.

However, what most parents fail to see is that the best education they can give their children is usually very cheap.

Parents can see that their children’s skills vary, skilled in some areas while poor in others. What most parents fail to realize though, is that today’s children lack self-respect and self-confidence.

The problem is that parents are only educating their children on how to take multiple-choice tests and how to study well, but parents are not teaching them the most important skills they need to be confident, happy and clever.

Parents can achieve this by teaching practical skills like cooking , sewing and doing other housework.

Teaching a child to cook will improve many of the skills that he will need later in life. Cooking demands patience and time. It is an enjoyable but difficult experience. A good cook always tries to improve his cooking, so he will learn to work hard and gradually finish his job successfully. His result, a well-cooked dinner, will give him much satisfaction and a lot of confidence.

Some old machines, such as a broken radio or TV set that you give your child to play with will make him curious and arouse his interest. He will spend hours looking at them, trying to fix them; your child might become an engineer when he grows up. These activities are not only

teaching a child to read a book, but rather to think, to use his mind. And that is more important. 64.Parents in China according to this passage .

A.are too strict with their children

B.are too rich to educate their children

C.have some problems in educating their children correctly

D.have no problems in educating their children strictly

65.The writer of the passage does not seem to be satisfied with .

A.learn how to serve their parents

B.learn how to become strong and fat

C.benefit from it and prepare themselves for the future

D.make their parents believe that they are clever

67.According to the last paragraph we can conclude that .

A.broken radios and television sets are useful

B.one’s curiosity may be useful for his later life

C.an engineer must fix many broken radios

D.a good student should spend much time repairing radios

D

“Primary school children are abandoning books for computer games, as parents struggle to find the right balance between play, homework, reading and electronic entertainment at home,” said Ed Balls, the Education Secretary.

Mr Balls called on parents to cut down on the amount of time they let their children play computer games and urge them to spend at least ten minutes a night reading bedtime stories.

He added that a recent survey by his department had found a huge amount of concern among parents about how best to control their children’s computer play.

“Across the country we should be getting our kids to play computer games a bit less and to read a bit more,” he said.

His comments followed the publication of a major international comparison of reading among ten—year—olds, which showed that England had fallen from third to fifteenth position in the past five years. Scotland fell from fourteenth to twenty—first place in the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study, run by Boston College in Massachusetts. Russian children came top in the study.

The literacy report for England, produced for the Government by the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER), found that 22 percent of English children spent five hours or more playing computer or video games on a normal school day, with 37 percent spending more than three hours. This was exceeded only by the US and seven other countries.

The report also found a clear association between the number of books at home and reading attainment. The 23 percent of children with 200 or more books at home had significantly higher reading scores than the 10 percent with ten or fewer books.

68.According to the passage, spend the most time on reading.

A.Russian children B.American children

C.English children D.Scottish children

69.What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A.How children perform at reading tests is mainly determined by the number of books

B.Children should keep at least ten books at home in order to get good reading scores.

C.Only children who have more than 200 books at home can perform well at reading tests.

D.The number of books children have at home is obviously related to their reading tests. 70.What does the passage mainly tell us?

A.Playing computer games too much can greatly affect children’s learning grades.

B.Parents are urged to make children play computer games less and read more.

C.Children in different countries spend different amounts of time on reading.

D.It is necessary for children today to find a balance between playing and learning.

71.It can be inferred from the passage that .

A.busy parents today are to blame for causing reduced reading time for their children

B.children in developed countries show less interest in reading

C.parents haven’t found a proper way to regulate their children’s computer play

D.all the parents spend less than 10 minutes reading bedtime stories

E

The U. S. Department of Labor statistics show that there is an oversupply of college trained workers and that this oversupply is increasing. Already there have been more than enough teachers, engineers, physicists, aerospace experts, and other specialists. Yet colleges and graduate schools continue every year to turn out highly trained people to compete for jobs that aren’t there. The result is that graduates cannot enter the professions for which they were trained and must take temporary jobs which do not require a college degree.

On the other hand, there is a great need for skilled workers of all sorts: carpenters, electricians, mechanics, TV repairmen.

These people have more work than, they can deal with, and their annual incomes are often higher than those of college graduates. The old gap that white-collar workers make a better living than blue collar workers no longer holds true. The law of supply and demand now favors the skilled workmen.

The reason for this situation is the traditional myth that college degree is a passport to a prosperous future. A large part of American society matches success in life equally with a college degree. Parents begin indoctrinating(灌输) their children with this myth before they are out of grade school. High school teachers play their part by acting as if high school education were a preparation for college rather than for life. Under this pressure the kids fall in line. Whether they want to go to college or not doesn’t matter.Everybody should go to college, so of course they must go. And every year college enrollments(入学) go up and up, and more and more graduates are overeducated for the kinds of jobs available to them.

One result of this emphasis on a college education is that many people go to college who do not belong there. Of the sixty percent of high school graduates who enter college, half of them do not graduate with their class. Many of them drop out within the first year. Some struggle on for two or three years and then give up.

72.It’s implied but not stated in the passage that ___________.

A.many other countries are facing the same problem

B.white-collar workers used to make more money than blue-collar ones

C.fewer students will prefer to go to college in the future

D.the law of supply and demand has a strong effect on American higher education. 73.Which of the following is NOT a reason why college enrollments go up every year?

A.Many people believe that the only way to success is a college education.

B.Many parents want their children to go to college.

C.High school teachers urge their students to go to college.

D.Every young man and woman wants to go to college.

74.By saying that “many people go to college who do not belong there”, the author means that many people who____________.

A.are not fit for college education go to college

B.do not have enough money go to college

C.go to college drop out within the first year

D.go to college have their hopes destroyed

75.We can infer from the passage that the author believes that ________.

A.every young man and woman should go to college

B.college education is a bad thing for the young people

C.people with a college education should receive higher pay

D.fewer people should go to college while more should be trained for skilled jobs

One possible version:

There has been a sharp increase in the number of returnees since 1978 across the country. Between 1978 and 2008, about 7,000 overseas Chinese returned to Beijing after completing their studies abroad. The year 2009 has witnessed a boom. The number of returness came up to 15,000.

There are three reasons for this. Firstly, our government values overseas Chinese scholars highly and encourages them to return home to start their own careers and has worked out a series of preferential policies. Secondly, China’s economy has been developing at a high speed, which provides them with a vast space of development. Many returnees have achieved outstanding success in scientific research or in high-level management. They are playing a more and more important role. Thirdly, the current global financial crisis leaves many overseas out of work or at the edge of being laid off. They feel more secure at home because the economy is more stable.

I do hope that more overseas Chinese can head home. There is a bright future ahead of them.
