When milk arrived on the doorstep

When I was a boy growing up in New Jersey in the 1960s, we had a milkman delivering milk to our doorstep. His name was Mr. Basille. He wore a white cap and drove a white truck. As a 5-year-old boy, I couldn't take my eyes off the coin changer fixed to his belt. He noticed this one day during a delivery and gave me a quarter out of his coin changer.

Of course, he delivered more than milk. There was cheese, eggs and so on. If we needed to change our order, my mother would pen a note—"Please add a bottle of buttermilk next delivery"—and place it in the box along with the empty bottles. And then, the buttermilk would magically appear.

All of this was about more than convenience. There existed a close relationship between families and their milkmen. Mr. Basille even had a key to our house, for those times when it was so cold outside that we put the box indoors, so that the milk wouldn't freeze. And I remember Mr. Basille from time to time taking a break at our kitchen table, having a cup of tea and telling stories about- his delivery.

There is sadly no home milk delivery today. Big companies allowed the production of cheaper milk thus making it difficult for milkmen to compete. Besides, milk is for sale everywhere, and it may just not have been practical to have a delivery service.

Recently, an old milk box in the countryside I saw brought back my childhood memories. I took it home and planted it on the back porch. Every so often my son's friends will ask what it is. So I start telling stories of my boyhood, and of the milkman who brought us friendship along with his milk.

13.Why does home milk delivery no longer exist?

C.It has been driven out of the market.

As more and more people speak the global languages of English, Chinese, Spanish, and Arabic, other languages are rapidly disappearing. In fact, half of the 6,000-7,000 languages spoken around the world today will likely die out by the next century, according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

In an effort to prevent language loss, scholars from a number of organizations-UNESCO and National Geographic among them-have for many years been documenting dying languages and the cultures they reflect.

Mark Turin, a scientist at the Macmillan Center, Yale University, who specializes in the languages and oral traditions of the Himalayas, is following in that tradition. His recently

published book, A Grammar of Thangmi with an Ethnolinguistic Introductionto the Speakers and Their Culture, grows out of his experience living, looking and raising a family in a village in Nepal.

Documenting the Tangmi language and culture is just a starting point for Turin, who seeks to include other languages and oral traditions across the Himalayans reaches of India, Nepal, Bhutan, and China. But he is not content to simply record these voices before they disappear without record.

At the University of Cambridge Turin discovered a wealth of important materials-including photographs, films, tap recordings, and field notes- which had remained unstudied and were badly in need of care and protection.

Now, through the two organizations that he has founded-the Digital Himalaya Project and the World Oral Literature Project -Turin has started a campaign to make such documents, found in libraries and stores around the world, available not just to scholars but to the younger generations of communities from whom the materials were originally collected. Thanks to digital technology and the widely available Internet, Turin notes, the endangered languages can be saved and reconnected with speech communities.

D.set up languages research organizations

15.What does "that tradition" in Paragraph 3 refer to?

In 2015, Chennai was destroyed by one of the worst floods in over a century, leaving hundreds without food, water and supplies. During the worst phases of those floods, many heroes arose, one of whom was Santhosh, a young man who owned a take-out restaurant in Chennai.

When the first floods hit in November, he got a call from a company called Naga Rava which is in another city. The company asked them to prepare 5,000 packets of food and give them to the

flood victims. He, with his partners, took the order, cooked for 14 hours and delivered them. But that night, as they sat together discussing the events of the day, they actually felt ashamed. "Here was a man not even from Chennai and he was going out of his way to help the affected people. We, while living here, had not really done anything ourselves for our own people," said Santhosh later.

He then began the groundwork for collecting funds to help cook more dishes. Little did he know that the November floods were just the beginning; the real show was about to begin. The December floods affected them all. His own house got flooded and his family were stranded on the second floor. They lost phone connectivity and electricity. In spite of this, Santhosh went back out into the floods, creating a temporary kitchen and preparing food all by himself for the victims.

He did not sleep for four days, taking a break one hour every day as he kept on cooking. As word got out of this man's effort, others stepped out to join him. From children to the elderly, strangers came to assist him in cooking, packing and transporting food. 300 volunteers worked together to make it all happen. By the time the fourth day finally came to an end, Santhosh and his team had prepared an astonishing 170,000 food boxes and delivered them to people in need. 17.What inspired Santhosh to help the affected people?

China Needs To Fight Its Massive Food Waste To Combat Climate Change

China is facing a massive food waste crisis. Over 6% of China's total food production is already lost before reaching consumers, and restaurants in Chinese cities throw away an average of a third of food served. Amid the climate crisis and an already vulnerable global food system exposed by the current Covid-19 pandemic, it is vital to tackle food waste in Asia's largest country.

Asia currently drives over half of global food waste, and China is one of the leading countries contributing an enormous amount of discarded food each year. According to a recent report conducted by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and local NGO partners, Chinese cities produce 25% of the world's municipal solid waste - most of which is food. When examining restaurants and school canteens, data showed that one third of all the food served is thrown away.

Why does food waste pose a massive challenge to the planet? Besides global hunger, the way that food waste is managed contributes to driving climate change. Much of the China's food waste ends up in landfills, which contributes significant amounts of methane, a major greenhouse gas that causes global heating. Scientists have found that every kilogram of landfilled solid waste releases its equivalent(同等的)weight of carbon dioxide equivalent(等价物).With cities contributing to the most food waste in the country, they need to be at the front lines to address the problem. Projects across other cities in Asia can serve as examples on how to reduce food waste, such as Singapore's Lumitics, a tech-forward startup, which has created a food waste tracker that can attach to bins in commercial kitchens. The product aims to help F & B and hospitality businesses analyze the type of food that is being thrown away the most in order to launch a targeted campaign to reduce the amount of discarded food.

But let's be clear - food waste is not a problem in China or Asia alone. With over 10% of annual global carbon emissions coming driven by food waste, the entire world needs to step up its efforts to fight the issue.
