PartⅠReading Comprehension

Passage 1

Very high waves are destructive when they strike the land. Fortunately, this seldom happens. One reason is that out at sea, waves moving in one direction almost always run into waves moving in a different direction. The two sets of waves tend to cancel each other out. Another reason is that water is shallower near the shore. As a wave gets closer to land, the shallow bottom helps reduce its strength.

But the power of waves striking the shore can still be very great. During a winter gale, waves sometimes strike with the force of 6,000 pounds for each square foot. That means a wave, 25 feet high and 500 feet along its face, may strike the shore with a force of 75 million pounds.

Yet the waves, no matter how big or how violent, affect only the surface of the sea. During the most raging storms, the water a hundred fathoms (600 feet) beneath the surface is just as calm as on a day without a breath of wind.

1. According to the passage, destruction caused by high waves occurs _______.

A. regularly

B. rarely

C. always

D. predictably

2. We know from this passage that out at sea, when waves going in opposite directions meet,

their force __________.

A. causes great damage

B. extends to the ocean floor

C. is liable to lessen

D. increase rapidly

3. It is clear from the passage that coastal depth _________.

A. is the only factor influencing the strength of high waves

B. influences the power of high waves

C. has no in influence upon the strength of very high waves

D. is irrelevant to the question of the power of high waves

4. From the second paragraph of the passage we know that power of very high waves

striking the shore is _________.

A. constant

B. equalized

C. variable

D. perpetual

5. From your reading of the passage, which of the following is true?

A. At a depth of 1,200 feet the effects of a violent surface storm are frightful.

B. A submarine commander navigating his vessel at a depth of 700 feet will not be

affected by a raging surface storm.

C. A typhoon 500miles out at sea can stir up the ocean floor.

D. If high waves cab strike the shore with a horizontal force of 75 million pounds, the

vertical force of such waves can have an even greater effect upon the ocean floor.

Passage 2

To the Editor:

Your article on plans for aiding the elderly to pay their housing costs was not quite

clear in several aspects. I would like to clarify the requirements and exemptions (豁免) available for those who qualify.

In the first place, a tenant 62 years old or older must live in a rent-controlled or rent-stabilized dwelling, pay more than one-third of his or her income for rent, and have a yearly income of $8,000 or less. Such a tenant must reapply each year thereafter. Once is not enough. It is understood, however, that should the landlord make a major improvement, a new furnace for example, all tenants are not excluded from such a rent increase.

Landlords receive tax exemptions as reimbursement (赔偿) for the money they lose in not increasing rent for the elderly. In New York City the cost of these tax reductions is $ 41 million a year, a tremendous figure, but likely to be higher if more of the elderly poor learn they may apply for exemptions. The city is so slow in processing applications that some tenants have paid the full rent. They ought to have done so. They are fully protected by the law and once they have applied for exemption, they do not have to pay rent increases.

I appeal to you to clarify this issue so that the poor elderly of our city may become aware of the housing benefits for which they qualify.

6. Would an unemployed woman, 65 years old, with an income of $ 6,000 in Social

Security and $ 3,000 in aid from her children qualify for exemption from rent increases?

A. Possibly, but more information is needed.

B. Definitely.

C. Maybe next year she would qualify, but not this year.

D. Never.

7. When a landlord air-conditions an apartment building ____________.

A. he can then raise the tenants' rent

B. he has improved his property and must bear the expense himself

C. he can take the cost off his income tax

D. his tenants are poor and elderly

8. Which of the following does New York City provide to the landlords who do not increase

rent for the elderly?

A. A list of restrictions.

B. $ 41 million a year in cash refunds.

C. An amount equal to the rent increases in tax exemptions.

D. Higher prices for improving their buildings.

9. Elderly tenants who qualify for exemptions from rent increases have nevertheless paid

rent increases because ____________.

A. they have the necessary income

B. they are old and ignorant

C. their applications are not processed quickly

D. the law does not protect them

10. The word "clarify" is related to the word “_______”.

Passage 3

Grandma Moses is among the most celebrated twentieth century painters of the United States, yet she had barely started painting before she was in her late seventies. As she once said of herself, “I would never sit back in rocking chair, waiting for someone to help me.” No one could have had a more productive old age.

She was born Anna Mary Robertson on a farm in New York State, one of five boys and five girls. At twelve she left home and was in domestic service until, at twenty-seven, she married Thomas Moses, the hired hand of one of her employers. They farmed most of their lives, first in Virginia and then in New York State, at Eagle Bridge. She had ten children, of whom five survived; her husband died in 1927.

Grandma Moses painted a little as a child and made embroidery pictures as a hobby, but only switched to oils in old age because her hands had become too stiff to sew and she wanted to keep busy and pass the time. Her pictures were first sold at the local drugstore and at a fair, and were soon spotted by a dealer who bought everything she painted. Three of the pictures were exhibited in the Museum of Modem Art, and in 1940 she had her first exhibition in New York. Between 1930s and her death she produced some 2,000 pictures: detailed and lively portrayals of the rural life she had known for so long, with a marvelous sense of color and form. “I think real hard till I think of something real p retty, and then I paint it.” she said.

11. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A. Grandma Moses: A Biographical Sketch.

painting for relief.

B. Grandma Moses knew nothing about painting before she was in her seventies.

C. Most of her pictures are concerned about rural life.

D. Her pictures were attractive once appearing in the market.

Passage 4

By 1970, according to a World Wildlife Fund report, only about 4,500 tigers survived throughout the world—half of them in India. Mr. Foresters, who followed and counted tiger footprints, estimated that in May 1972 only about 1,800 tigers existed in India. Project Tiger supported by W. W. F. was immediately launched. Nine tiger reserves were created, with armed guards protecting them.

The project provided opportunities for researchers from India and abroad to study tigers in the reserves and gather previously unavailable information about their habits. Studies show that a male tiger may control a hunting territory of between 10 and 20 sq. kms. depending on its age, size and strength. The territory of male includes the smaller territories of three or four tigresses.

A tiger marks the boundaries of its territories by spraying urine (尿) and other bodily liquids on bushes. But it tries to avoid territorial fights, being guided by the distinctive body smell of other tigers. Tigers fight to death only when a tigress is defending her young, or when a tiger is guarding a tigress from the attentions of other males.

The popular image of the tiger is that of a merciless and unconquerable hunter. But studies show that it catches only one of 20 victims (牺牲品) it tries to attack.

Fears have recently developed that Project Tiger has been too successful. It has enabled the tiger population to double (by mid-80s), but India's human population has also grown out of control. Currently it is 750 million and likely to be 900 million by the end of the century. Land problem is becoming serious and many rural people feel bitter about the fact that some rich forests are reserved for tigers. A growing number of attacks by tigers on man has added to the hostility (敌意).

16. The ultimate aim of Project Tiger is to_________.

A. study the growth rate of tigers

B. protect tigers from being killed

C. promote the breeding of young tigers

D. analyze the behavioral patterns of tigers

17. Studies have shown that________.

A. a tigress never attacks until attacked

B. the tigress is not as fierce as the tigers

C. a tiger usually fights another tiger to defend its own territory

D. the tiger is not an efficient hunter as is commonly described

18 According to the passage, a tiger's territory_________.

A. remains unchanged

B. is often defended by tigresses

C. expands as the tiger grows up

D. is the cause of most fights

19. Some people are afraid that Project Tiger_________.

A. has been carried too far

B. has not received enough attention

C. has failed to achieve its goal

D. is not worth the money spent on it

20. The author seems___________.

A. to be enthusiastic about Project Tiger

B. to have a matter-of-fact attitude towards Project Tiger

C. to have a hostile attitude towards Project Tiger

D. to be satisfied with Project Tiger

However, a few students disagree with it. If music and art are in the exam, there will be more subjects to prepare for, and it needs more time and energy. So students will be under too much pressure. In my opinion, music and art should be in the entrance examination for high school. As we all know, art and music play an important role in our life, which can help us develop our interests and make our life more colorful. The most important thing is that we can relax ourselves by art and music in Grade 9. 听力材料原文: 第9期中考模拟试题(二)
