Culture shock

Some people feel culture shock when travelling to a different country. Most people feel culture shock when studying aboard. When I first came to New Zealand I felt there were many differences compared to China. Some of the factors of culture shock are obvious. When the plane landed, I felt New Zealand’s environment has a lot of difference from that of china. When I began to study here, I found more and more differences between China and New Zealand. The key culture shocks are environment, traffic and food.

When I arrived in New Zealand, I felt New Zealand is so different compared to China. When I first saw New Zealand I found they have a blue sky and low houses like in the fairy tales. I think New Zealand’s fresh air is the best in the world. In January 2014, I came to New Zealand. China was in winter but here was summer. This is my first culture shock. I wore jacket when I arrived New Zealand, I changed my clothes to T-shirt. The weather here is so different from China. In Chin a’s November to January is the winter, from June to September is the summer, the season in New Zealand and China is opposite, when China is in summer, New Zealand is in winter, when China is in winter, New Zealand is in summer. I remembered when I first came to New Zealand, temperature here was very hot and had very strong sunlight. New Zealand’s ultraviolet rays is very strong, in China I always used 20+ or 25+ sunscreen cream, but here I have to use 50+ or more than 50+ sunscreen cream. To be honest, I have never used more than 50+ sunscreen creams. When I first used 50+ sunscreen cream I thought I am so crazy! In Auckland, I have never seen snow whereas in China, there will snow in every winter, but every winter here has rain, very heavy rain and strong wind. I always thought the strong wind would blow away the house. New Zealand’s environment has many difference with China. So I think this is my first environment culture shock.

When I was in China, I knew the traffic between China and New Zealand, there is a very big difference. Cars in China is right-hand drive, but in New Zealand is left hand drive. Traffic is the second thing that makes me feel very different . In china I always seated in right way, but in here I needed to change seat in the left way. Sometimes I always open wrong car door. And New Zealand has very big north-south span, if you don’t have your own car, you must feel lost a leg. But in New Zealand pass drive test is not easy. You needed to do one whitening examination and two driving examinations. Here there are a lot of traffic rules. And you can see many rotary islands in the road. In China there are just a few rotary islands. I don’t like New Zealand traffic, because it’s so slow, here if I want to go to city, I need to have one half hours on the bus. And sometimes bus always disappears and is late. I think taking buses in New Zealand is a big challenge for me. I hate to spend long time in the bus, because in the bus I can’t do any thing. There are not enough buses for students here. It’s so inconvenient to student. And in China the road is very wide. But here each way just have one or two road. So when I first took car in New Zealand, I felt a big culture shock.

Food, I love food. I like to try different country food. When I came to New Zealand I find there are a lot of different food culture shock compared with china. It is no doubt that it is a tradition to use chopsticks for Chinese. But people in New Zealand prefer to use forks and knives. This result is based on different food they like. New Zealanders choose to eat beefsteak, bread, and salad, while Chinese people choose noodles, pancakes and rice. What is more, the custom of drinking tea in China and drinking coffee in New Zealand are standing out particularly. However, there is a trend that the food in both countries have been mixture. For example, the coffee and bread have introduced to China. The famous KFC is very popular among children. People in New Zealand always like eating meat and vegetable first, eating dessert at the end. here eating meat and vegetable first, eating dessert in the end is a rule. But Chinese people are not the same to New Zealand people. In China, we always eat meat, vegetable, fruit and dessert together. In New Zealand when I went out with my friend and eat dinner, we ate meat, vegetable, fruit and dessert together, a lot of kiwi want to stop us, and ask me why you eat all things together, and kiwi is feels ery strange to our eating habits. It sounds very interesting, but it does show the impact of Chinese culture and New Zealand.

Another thing that makes me shocked is thinking styles of the students between Chinese students and the students in New Zealand. In china, teacher is the leader in class and students always follow what the teacher says. However, it is different here. Students are given more chance to think by themselves which is helpful to them in the future.

I have lived in New Zealand for more than a year. Sometimes I still feel some culture shocksin my life, but culture shock is not very evident. I have adapted to living in New Zealand. Above three points that I think for me the most suited to the cultural shock. I think speaking is a good way to solve the culture shock. Some good ways to successfully minimize and overcome culture shock is to read about the place where you will be staying and the things you will be doing, also, if possible, speak with someone already living in the new environment.

Proactive Strategies to Build a Social Life A) A lot of people believe that developing a social life is something that should just happen and develop naturally, without you needing to do anything. I disagree. I think that while this can happen for some folks, in certain stages of their life, it’s not always the case, which is why many of us today lack a fulfilling social life. But if you’re an accountant working in cubicle all day and you’re kind of shy and don’t go out much, your social life may be seriously deficient. B) In my view, building a social life requires the same active and strategic approach that making money or building a career requires. The approach is based on setting goals and acting on them. Coming from this angle, I want to show you some proactive (积极主动的) strategies to build a social life. C) A fulfilling social life looks differently for different people. Some of us need lots of friends and a large social circle. Some of us are more fond of having just a few friends, but who are very close to us. And some prefer a mix of the two. What is your preference Do you know Take some time to think about this and visualize what your ideal social circle would look like.
