Task:Some people think getting old is entirely bad. However, others think that life of the elderly in modern world is much easier than in the past. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Sample answer:

Getting old is a natural process that nobody really likes. When you reach

a certain age, your physical conditions will inevitably deteriorate, and

you may suffer from various kinds of diseases. When you retire, you will

feel isolated because your previous work contacts may be all gone, then

you may feel useless to the world. Furthermore, when you get too old, you’

ll have to rely heavily on the support from others, either physically or

emotionally, and your life will become a great pressure to your family

and the whole society as well.

For all these bad things about getting old, many people argue that the

life of the elderly today is much easier than in the past. In the first

place, medical advances nowadays have made it possible for the old people

to stay sound and healthy for quite a long while even after they retire.

Diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and heart attack which might have

inflicted pain on the old people are no longer serious problems for them. Then, with the widespread use of modern communication technology, old people today are no longer isolated from the world. Instead, by using their personal social media, they can always stay in touch with their families and friends, and share with them whatever they find interesting in their life. In this way, they do not really feel lonely or abandoned. Finally, the improved social wealth and pension system have also significantly reduced the pressure the old people pose to their families and communities.

So, I do agree that the old people today are enjoying a much more comfortable life than, say, thirty years ago (not to mention 100). That is why, instead of being worried about their retired life, many people even begin to expect their retirement to come, because they see this as a new beginning of their life. I think, as long as the old people have the right attitude, the modern world has indeed much to offer for their happy, enjoyable and rewarding retired life.

Task 1: table essay

The table below shows changes in the numbers of residents cycling to work in different areas of the UK between 2001 and 2011. The table compares the numbers of people who cycled to work in twelve areas of the UK in the years 2001 and 2011. Overall, the number of UK commuters who travelled to work by bicycle rose considerably over the 10-year period. Inner London had by far the highest number of cycling commuters in both years. In 2001, well over 43 thousand residents of inner London commuted by bicycle, and this figure rose to more than 106 thousand in 2011, an increase of 144%. By contrast, although outer London had the second highest number of cycling commuters in each year, the percentage change, at only 45%, was the lowest of the twelve areas shown in the table. Brighton and Hove saw the second biggest increase (109%) in the number of residents cycling to work, but Bristol was the UK’s second city in terms of total numbers of cycling commuters, with 8,108 in 2001 and 15,768 in 2011. Figures for the other eight areas were below the 10 thousand mark in both years. (172 words, band 9)

(补充:在下一段看到了你对于后一张图的总结,这样的话建议你在开头强调一下“the first graph”) As can be seen from the graph, there is a similar trend in terms of average monthly temperature between London and New York during the period from January to December. (可加入连接词:To be specific) The average temperature in London (介于你后面写的是两个城市的数据,这里改为:for both of the cities) gradually rises from January to July both in London and new york, reaching a peak at 25 degrees and 20 degrees respectively. After that, the following 4 months witness a dramatic decrease both in London and new york. In comparison (这里不妨分段), an opposite trend is found in Sydney. It (这是悉尼的第一句,建议写出来具体的量词至少:The temperature) keeps stable at 25 degrees from January to march, after which the average temperature undergoes a considerable descent, reaching the bottom point at approximately 15 degrees, before there is (there is 没必要了,可以去除) a steady ascent by 10 degrees. It is obvious that the table depicts the average number of hours of sunshine per year in three major cities. As we can see from the statistics, when it comes to the total annual hours of sunshine, new york ranks first, followed by Sydney ,London lies last. Specifically, people who live in new york enjoy 2,353 hours of sunshine every year, which is similar to people living in London with 2,473 hours (不是人和人像,是时间长短像,改为:which is similar to the amount of sunshine for those in London). However, only 1,180 hours of sunshine are found in London annually. 总评6.5(TA6.5 CC6.5 LR6.5 GRA7.0) 1.

现以2008年11月15日的考题为例: there are more workers to work from home and more students to study from home. this is because the computer technology is more and more easily accessible and cheaper. do you think it is a positive or negative development?(题目为考生回忆,与 原题可能有少许出入) 通读题目,了解大意。

Task 1: 'waste table' essay

The table below shows the amount of waste production (in millions of tonnes) in six different countries over a twenty-year period. The chart compares the amounts of waste that were produced in six countries in the years 1980, 1990 and 2000. In each of these years, the US produced more waste than Ireland, Japan, Korea, Poland and Portugal combined. It is also noticeable that Korea was the only country that managed to reduce its waste output by the year 2000. Between 1980 and 2000, waste production in the US rose from 131 to 192 million tonnes, and rising trends were also seen in Japan, Poland and Portugal. Japan’s waste output increased from 28 to 53 million tonnes, while Poland and Portugal saw waste totals increase from 4 to 6.6 and from 2 to 5 million tonnes respectively. The trends for Ireland and Korea were noticeably different from those described above. In Ireland, waste production increased more than eightfold, from only 0.6 million tonnes in 1980 to 5 million tonnes in 2000. Korea, by contrast, cut its waste output by 12 million tonnes between 1990 and 2000.

Task:Art classes, like painting and drawing, are not as important as other subjects, so some people think that it should not be a compulsory subject at high school. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Schools are places where students acquire knowledge and skills needed for further achievements. Given the pressure that students are facing, some cannot help wondering whether art classes should still be compulsory. Those holding the view that art classes should not be compulsory might think that art consumes too much of students' time. Fierce competitions students will face when applying for universities necessitate total devotion to academic subjects. College students who intend to take science as their major are even expected to be fluent in foreign languages now so that essays written by foreign scholars are not barriers in their academic pursuit. In other words, high school students are supposed to show higher levels of academic competence, which seemingly makes art unessential. However, art classes are by no means only intended for entertainment. Children even dabbling in art tend to be more creative in mind. Those skilled in music or painting can interpret the world in a way that we cannot expect from a layman. This kind of ingenuity is also a rare quality constantly found in great scientists, whose contributions have served to create a totally new field for the latter generations. In his reply to a question about death, Albert Einstein considered his departure from the mortal world to be forever farewell to another great musician. With a sigh he answered "I cannot listen to Mozart anymore". Thus, can we simply regard art classes to be selective?

The diagrams below show the stages and equipment used in the cement-making process, and how cement is used to produce concrete for building purposes. The first diagram illustrates the process of cement manufacture, and the second diagram shows the materials that go into the production of concrete. It is clear that there are five stages in the production of cement, beginning with the input of raw materials and ending with bags of the finished product. To produce concrete, four different materials are mixed together. At the first stage in the production of cement, limestone and clay are crushed to form a powder. This powder is then mixed before it passes into a rotating heater. After heating, the resulting mixture is ground, and cement is produced. Finally, the cement is packaged in large bags. Cement is one of the four raw materials that are used in the production of concrete, along with gravel, sand and water. To be exact, concrete consists of 50% gravel, 25% sand, 15% cement and 10% water. All four materials are blended together in a rotating machine called a concrete mixer. (160 words, band 9)
