V olleyball has become a worldwide sport that is popular with all age groups, but when did this fun sport start? The history of volleyball dates back to 1895 when William G.Morgan met a Canadian James Naismith, inventor of basketball and was influenced by him and basketball. Then he wanted to invent a new game that was fit for middle-aged men.

Morgan enjoyed the game of basketball, but soon he realized that it was too fast paced for some of the older men.So, he decided to invent a game that was still played on a court, but the players were not required to run up and down—he created the game of “mintonette.” Volleyball history shows that the original game of mintonette was played on a full court with a net in the middle. Two teams tossed(抛)the ball back and forth over the net, similar to the game of badminton. In order to cut down the equipment costs, the players played the ball with their hands.

The game quickly became popular, and everyone wanted to learn how to play volleyball. It quickly spread to other areas, across the United States, and even to other countries.Several changes were made to the game.

Then specific volleyball rules were set into place. Some of the rules of volleyball included the court size, number of players, and number of hits per team. The rules also stated that players must rotate(轮换)around the court so that everyone had a turn to serve the ball. Also, a standard volleyball size and shape were decided within a few years. The rules continued to change and adjust throughout the history of volleyball, until the game became what we have today.

Even though volleyball history says that the game was originally created for middle-aged men, the game has become so popular among all kinds of people.Today there are many different kinds of competitive volleyball teams: high school volleyball, college volleyball, women volleyball, men, children, mixed teams, etc. There is an endless amount of possibilities with this game because it is easy to learn, many people can play together, and it can by played indoors or outside.

One cause of the current food crisis is drought.Food prices are high in part because of dry weather in places as far distant as Spain and Australia.Around the world, the amount of land affected by drought has doubled in the past thirty years. And scientists concerned about climate change believe it will cause more drought in many areas in the future.

A lot of research is going into efforts to develop drought-resistant crops. One project involves tobacco plants genetically engineered to keep their leaves during water shortages. They chose tobacco because it has big leaves. Also, it grows fast and has structural similarities with some other plants.

The researchers did an experiment with two groups of tobacco plants. They worked with a set of normal plants and a set of transgenic plants. These had a gene added to interfere with the biological causes of leaf loss during drought.

The researchers put all the plants in a greenhouse to grow under normal conditions for forty days. Then, for fifteen days after that, the plants did not receive any water.

The normal plants lost their green color. Finally, they lost their leaves. But the researchers say the transgenic plants kept their leaves and their color.

After the fifteen dry days, all the plants were watered again for a week. The transgenic plants returned to normal growth, and their seed production was close to normal. But the other plants all died.

In addition, the researchers found that the plants could survive on only thirty percent of the normal amount of irrigation water.Yield loss was minor, they said.

The findings appeared late 2007 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The University of California has applied for patent protection for the technology.

The researchers expect to move forward with field testing of the transgenic tobacco in late August. They hope for similar results with crops like tomatoes, rice, wheat and cotton.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF)has declared October 15 as Global Handwashing Day in 2005.The first Global Handwashing Day is on October 15 of 2008 .Activities are planned over twenty countries to get millions of people in the developing world to wash their hands with soap.Global Handwashing Day is the idea of the Public-Private Partnership for Handwashing with Soap.Partners include the UN Children's Fund, American government agencies, the World Bank and soap makers Unilever and Procter and Gamble. The goal is to create a culture of hand washing with soap.

Hand washing can prevent the spread of disease.Experts say people around the world wash their hands but very few use soap at so-called critical moments. These include after using the toilet, after cleaning a baby and before touching food.

When people get germs on their hands, they can infect themselves by touching their eyes, nose or mouth. Then they can infect others.

The organizers say all soaps are equally effective at removing disease-causing germs. The correct way to wash is to wet your hands with a small amount of water and cover them with soap.Rub it into all areas, including under the fingernails.Rub for at least twenty seconds. Then , rinse well under running water. Finally, dry your hands with a clean cloth or wave them in the air.Soap is important because it increases the time that people spend washing. It also helps to break up the grease and dirt that hold most of the germs. And it usually leaves a pleasant smell, which increases the likelihood that people will wash again.

Washing with soap before eating and after using the toilet could save more lives than any medicine. It could help reduce cases of diarrhea(痢疾)by almost half. And it could reduce deaths from pneumonia and other breathing infections by one-fourth.Diarrhea is the second leading cause of child deaths, killing more than one and a half million children a year.Pneumonia is the leading cause, killing about two million children under five each year.Hand washing can also prevent the spread of other diseases.

The students of Class 3 had a discussion about whether it is necessary to start learning English from childhood. Some of them think that English learning should start form childhood. As little boys and girls have a very good memory, they can learn a lot of English words by heart. This will help them lay a solid foundation for their future English learning. But others do not agree. Young children have to learn Chinese Pinyin at school. If they study Chinese Pinyin and English at the same time, it will be very easy for them to mix them up. This will do a lot of harm not only to their Chinese learning but also to their future English learning. In short, the students have not arrived at any agreement yet.
