L4. Inaugural Address

inaugural (adj.) : of an inauguration就职(典礼)的;

1. We observe today not a victory of party, but a celebration of freedom -- symbolizing an end, as well as a beginning -- signify ing renewal, as well as change. For I have sworn before you and Almighty God the same solemn oath our forebear s prescribed nearly a century and three-quarters ago.

signify (v.) : be a sign or indication of;mean表明;意味

almighty (adj.) : having unlimited power;all—powerful有无限权力的;全能的forebear (n.)

prescribe (v.) : set down as a rule or direction;order;ordain;direct命令;指示;规定,订立

2.The world is very different now. For man holds in his mortal hands the power to abolish all forms of human poverty and all forms of human life. And yet the same revolutionary beliefs for which our forebears fought are still at issue around the globe,1the belief that the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state, but from the hand of God.

at issue : in dispute;to be decided;at variance;in disagreement意见不一致例:What is at issue is the extent to which exam results reflect a student’s ability.

generosity (n.) : the quality of being generous慷慨;宽宏大量

3. We dare not forget today that we are the heir s of that

first revolution. Let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans -- born in this century, tempered by war, disciplined by a hard and bitter peace, proud of our ancient heritage, and unwilling to witness or permit the slow undoing of those human rights to which this nation has always been committed, and to which we are committed today at home and around the world.

heir (n.) : person who appears to get some trait from a predecessor or seems to carry on in his tradition继承者;后嗣

undoing (n.) : the act of bringing to ruin,disgrace,or destruction毁灭;破坏( ruin 颠覆(活动);破坏)

4. Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, to assure the survival and the success of liberty.

foe (n.) : enemy;opponent敌人

5.This much we pledge -- and more2.

6. To those old allies whose cultural and spiritual origins we share, we pledge the loyalty of faithful friends. United there is little we cannot do in a host of cooperative ventures.3Divided there is little

2

we can do -- for we dare not meet a powerful challenge at odds and split asunder.

at odds : in disagreement;quarrelling, antagonistic意见不一致,有争执例:IHe was at odds with his colleagues.

asunder (adv.) : into parts or pieces分成碎片;分散

7. To those new states whom we welcome to the ranks of the free, we pledge our word that one form of colonial control shall not have passed away merely to be replaced by a far more iron tyranny. We shall not always expect to find them supporting our view. But we shall always hope to find them strongly supporting their own freedom -- and to remember that, in the past, those who foolishly sought power by riding the back of the tiger ended up inside.

8. To those people in the huts and villages of half the globe struggling to break the bonds of mass misery, we pledge our best efforts to help them help themselves, for whatever period is required -- not because the Communists may be doing it, not because we seek their votes, but because it is right. If a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich.

9. To our sister republics south of our border, we offer a special pledge: to convert our good words into good deeds, in a new alliance for progress, to assist free men and free governments in casting off the chains of poverty. But this peaceful revolution of hope cannot become the prey of hostile powers4. Let all our neighbors know that we shall join with them to oppose aggression or subversion anywhere in the Americas. And let every other power know that this hemisphere intends to remain the master of its own house.

alliance (n.) : a close association for a common objective as of nations,political parties,etc.

prey (n.) : a person or thing that falls victim to someone or something牺牲品;掠夺品subversion (n.) : a subverting or being subverted.

cast off : to discard;abandon;disown丢弃,摆脱例:A haven of tranquility where you can cast off the strains and stress of life.

10.To that world assembly of sovereign states, the United Nations, our last best hope in an age where the instruments of war have far outpaced the instruments of peace,5we renew our pledge of support -- to prevent it from becoming merely a forum for invective, to strengthen its shield of the new and the weak, and to

4

enlarge the area in which its writ may run.6

sovereign (adj.) : independent of all others独立自主的

outpace (v.)

invective (n.) : a violent verbal attack.strong criticism,insults, curses, etc.; vituperation

shield (n.) : any person or thing that guards, protects,or defends; protection保护人;防护物;保护

writ (n.) : a formal legal document ordering or prohibiting some action命令;律令;文书;传票

11. Finally, to those nations who would make themselves our adversary, we offer not a pledge but a request: that both sides begin anew the quest for peace, before the dark powers of destruction unleash ed by science engulf all humanity in planned or accidental self-destruction.7

adversary (n.) : a person who opposes or fights against another; opponent;enemy对手,反对者;敌手,敌方

unleash:release from or as from a leash(解开皮带以)释放

engulf (v.)

12.We dare not tempt them with weakness. For only when our arms are sufficient beyond doubt can we be certain beyond doubt that they will never be employed.

She was beyond doubt one of the finest swimmers in the school.

13. But neither can two great and powerful groups of nations take comfort from our present course -- both sides overburdened by the cost of modern weapons, both rightly alarmed by the steady spread of the deadly atom, yet both racing to alter that uncertain balance of terror that stays the hand of mankind's final war.8

14.So let us begin anew, remembering on both sides that civility is not a sign of weakness,9and sincerity is always subject to proof. Let us never negotiate out of fear, but let us never fear to negotiate.

anew (adv.) : again重新,再

civility (n.) : politeness.esp. in a merely formal way 礼貌,客气

15. Let both sides explore what problems unite us instead of belabor ing those problems which divide us.

belabor (v.) : talk about at unnecessary length唠唠叨叨地反复讲

16.Let both sides, for the first time, formulate serious and precise proposals for the inspection and control of arms, and bring

8

the absolute power to destroy other nations under the absolute control of all nations.

formulate (v.) : put together and express (a theory.plan ,etc.)a systematic way系统地阐述(或提出)(理论、计划等)

17.Let both sides seek to invoke the wonders of science instead of its terrors.10Together let us explore the stars, conquer the deserts, eradicate disease, tap the ocean depths, and encourage the arts and commerce.

tap (v.) : draw upon;make use of开发、发掘

18. Let both sides unite to heed in all corners of the earth the command of Isaiah to "undo the heavy burdens…(and)let the oppressed go free."

heed (v.) : pay close attention to;take careful notice of注意, 留神,留心

19. And, if a beachhead of cooperation may push back the jungle of suspicion, let both sides join in creating a new endeavor -- not a new balance of power, but a new world of law -- where the strong are just, and the weak secure, and the peace preserved.

beachhead (n.) : a position established by invading troops on an enemy shore;a position

gained as a secare starting point for any action;foothold滩头堡,登陆场;立足点endeavor (n.) : an earnest attempt or effort努力,尽力

20. All this will not be finished in the first one hundred days. Nor will it be finished in the first one thousand days; nor in the life of this Administration; nor even perhaps in our lifetime on this planet. But let us begin.

21. In your hands, my fellow citizens, more than mine, will rest the final success or failure of our course. Since this country was founded, each generation of Americans has been summoned to give testimony to its national loyalty.11The graves of young Americans who answered the call to service surround the globe.

testimony (n.) : any form of evidence,indication. etc.;proof证明,证据

22. Now the trumpet summons us again -- not as a call to bear arms, though arms we need -- not as a call to battle, though embattle d we are -- but a call to bear the burden of a long twilight struggle, year in and year out, "rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation," a struggle against the common enemies of man: tyranny, poverty, disease, and war itself.

embattle (v.) : [常用于被动语态]prepare,array,or set in line for battle使准备战斗,使严阵以待

tribulation (n.) : great misery or distress, as from oppression;deep sorrow苦难;困苦;忧伤

23. Can we forge against these enemies a grand and global alliance, North and South, East and West, that can assure a more fruitful life for all mankind? Will you join in that historic effort?

forge (v.) : move forward steadily,as if against difficulties; form;produce(似乎迎着困难)稳步前进;形成;结成

24In the long history of the world, only a few generations have been granted the role of defending freedom in its hour of maximum danger. I do not shrink from this responsibility -- I welcome it. I do not believe that any of us would exchange places with any other people or any other generation. The energy, the faith, the devotion which we bring to this endeavor will light our country and all who serve it. And the glow from that fire can truly light the world.

25. And so, my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.

26. My fellow citizens of the world, ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man.

27. Finally, whether you are citizens of America or citizens of the world, ask of us here the same high standards of strength and sacrifice which we ask of you. With a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love,12asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth God's work must truly be our own.

高级英语pub talk and the king's english中英笔记

L3. Pub Talk and the King’s English(酒吧闲谈与标准英语) Henry Fairlie (亨利·费尔利) 1.Conversation is the most sociable of all human activities. And it is an activity only of humans. However intricate the way in which animals communicate with each other, they do not indulge in anything that deserves the name of conversation. 1.And it is an activity only of humans. And conversation is an activity which is found only among human being. Sociable [?so???bl] adj.随和的,好交际的,友善的friendly or agreeable, eapecially in an easy, informal way(用书) intricate (adj) : hard to follow or understand because full of puzzling parts, details,or relationships错综复杂的;难以理解的,难懂的 Indulge: 任凭自己沉溺于……;耽于to allow yourself to have or do sth that you like, eapecially sth that is considered bad for you ----indulge in sth, indulge yourself. 例:Women do not indulge in to the same extent as men. deserve: 2.The charm of conversation is that it does not really start from anywhere, and no one has any idea where it will go as it meander s or leap s and sparkle s or just glow s. The enemy of good conversation is the person who has “something to say.”Conversation is not for making a point. Argument may often be a part of it, but the purpose of the argument is not to convince. There is no winning in conversation. In fact, the best conversationalist s are those who are prepared to lose. Suddenly they see the moment for one of their best anecdote s, but in a flash the conversation has moved on and the opportunity is lost. They are ready to let it go.

Face to face with Hurricane Camille中英笔记

Face To Face With Hurricane Camille 1John Koshak,Jr., knew Hurricane Camille would be bad. Radio and television warnings had sounded throughout that Sunday. Last August 17, as Camille lashed northwestward across the Gulf of Mexico. It was certain to pummel Gulfport, Miss., where the Koshaks lived. Along the coasts of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, nearly 150,000 people fled inland to safer ground. But like thousands of others in the coastal communities, John was reluctant to abandon his home unless the family—his wife, Janis and their seven children, aged 3 to 11—was clearly endangered. lash (v.): move quickly or violently猛烈冲击;拍打 pummel (n.): beat or hit with repeated blows, esp.with the fist(尤指用拳头)连续地打 2 Trying to reason out the best course of action, he talked with his father and mother, who had moved into the ten-room house with the Koshaks a month earlier from California. He also consulted Charles Hill, a longtime friend, who had driven from Las Vegas for a visit. course (n.): a way of behaving;mode 0f conduct行为;品行;做法 reason out: to find out an explanation or solution to a problem,by thinking of all the possibilities寻找解决途径 例:Let's reason this out instead of quarrelling. 3 John, 37—whose business was right there in his home (he designed and developed educational toys and supplies, and all of Magna Products’ correspondence, engineering drawings and art work were there on the first floor)—was familiar with the power of a hurricane. Four years earlier Hurricane Betsy had demolished his former home a few miles west of Gulfport (Koshak had moved his family to a motel for the night). But that house had stood only a few feet above sea level. “We’re elevated23 feet,” he told his father, “and we’re a good 250 yards from the sea. The place has been here since 1915, and no hurricane has ever bothered it. We’ll probably be as safe here as anyplace else.”

Marrakech George Orwell 1 As the corpse went past the flies left the restaurant table in a cloud and rushed after it, but they came back a few minutes later. 2 The little crowd of mourners -- all men and boys, no women--threaded their way across (break ones way)the market place between the piles of pomegranates and the taxis and the camels, walling a short chant over and over again. What really appeals to the flies is that the corpses here are never put into coffins, they are merely wrapped in a piece of rag and carried on a rough wooden bier on the shoulders of four friends. When the friends get to the burying-ground they hack an oblong hole a foot or two deep, dump the body in it and fling over it a little of the dried-up, lumpy earth, which is like broken brick. No gravestone, no name, no identifying mark of any kind. The burying-ground is merely a huge waste of hummocky earth, like a derelict building-lot. After a month or two no one can even be certain where his own relatives are buried. 1. 3 When you walk through a town like this -- two hundred thousand inhabitants of whom at least twenty thousand own literally (really;真实的)nothing except the rags they stand up in-- when you see how the people live, and still more how easily they die, it is always difficult to believe that you are walking among human beings. All colonial empires are in reality founded upon this fact. The people have brown faces--besides, there are so many of them! Are they really the same flesh (mankind人类)as your self? Do they even have names? Or are they merely a kind of undifferentiated(无差别的)brown stuff, about as individual as bees or coral insects? (三个疑问句)They rise out of the earth(出生贫寒,metaphor),they sweat and starve(alliteration;) for a few years, and then they sink back into the nameless mounds of the graveyard and nobody notices that they are gone. And even the graves themselves soon fade back into the soil. Sometimes, out for a walk as you break your way(threaded their way) through the prickly pear(刺梨), you notice that it is rather bumpy(not even)underfoot, and only a certain regularity in the bumps tells you that you are walking over skeletons.//part1:the coprse scene 3.
