I have just listened to the same “lecture” given by my grandmother. And now I’m beginning to think whether she is right when she complains, 36 she frequently does, that children nowadays aren’t as well-behaved as they 37to be. She describes in detail how she used to be told to 38 her elders and betters. She was taught to speak when she was spoken to, and when she went out 39her own, she was 40 to say “please” and “thank you”. Children in her days, she 41, were expected to be seen and not heard, but these days you are 42 if you ever hear parents telling their children to 43 her manners.

If you give her the 44, she then takes out of her writing desk the old photograph album which she keeps there, and which she is never 45 of displaying (展示). Of course when you look 46 pictures of her parents you feel 47 that, with a father as strict-looking as that, you too would have been “seen and not heard”. 48 him sits his wife, with their children around her—Granny and her elder brothers. It always occurs to me that perhaps those long, stiff (僵硬的), black clothes were so 49 to a little girl that she had not enough breath left to be talkative, not to mention mischievous(淘气的). 50 must have been a dull and lonely life too, 51 she stayed mainly at home during her childhood, while the brothers were 52from an early age.

However, my childhood was much 53 than Granny’s. I went to school with my brother, I played football with him and his friends. We 54 spoke a common language, and we got up to the same mischief. I would have died if I had had to 55 indoors, wearing tight, stiff clothes.

Sleep Struggle

Dr. Marjorie Seidenfeld answers your health

questions

I have such a terrible time falling asleep every night that I’m always tired

and it’s affecting my schoolwork. What should I do?

—Mindy in Nevada One in every five young people has a sleep problem, so you’re not alone. Getting enough sleep has become as important as eating vegetables and exercising regularly. It’s very important for your body.

Most young people only get seven hours of sleep each night, when they actually need nine hours. And making up for lost sleep during the week by sleeping in on weekends doesn’t really work. In fa ct, sleeping late on weekends may actually do you more harm than good, if you have sleep problems. What happens if you don’t get enough sleep? If your sleep problem continues for a few nights, you could suffer serious problems. Lack of sleep can affect learning and memory. Worse, if your sleep difficulties last a long time, that could lead to anxiety or depression (抑郁).

Therefore, you’ve got to have some healthy sleep habits. Below are some suggestions:

●Go to bed at the same time—including weekends, if possible.

●Wake up around the same time every morning When you sleep late just

one morning during the week, it may disturb your body clock. This will make it hard for you to sleep that night.

●Do something relaxing before going to bed.

●Exercise during the day. Don’t exercise right before going to bed.

●Avoid drinking alcohol. Alcohol makes you excited. This prevents you from

falling asleep or wakes you up during the night.

●Don’t smoke. Smoking is always bad for the body. Smoking before bedtime keeps you awake.

If trying these tips over a couple of weeks does not help you, speak to your doctor. Do not take any sleeping pills without first asking your doctor.

Many have strong side effects.

You are watching a film in which two men are having a fight. They hit one

another hard. At the start they only fight with their fists. But soon they begin

hitting one another over the heads with chairs. And so it goes on until one of the

men crashes (撞击) through a window and falls thirty feet to the ground below.

He is dead!Of course he isn't really dead. With any luck he isn't even hurt. Why?

Because the men who fall out of high windows or jump from fast moving trains,

who crash cars of even catch fire, are professionals. They do this for a living.

These men are called stuntmen. That is to say, they perform tricks. There are

two sides to their work. They actually do most of the things you see on the

screen. For example, they fall from a high building. However, they do not fall on

to hard ground but on to empty cardboard boxes covered with a mattress (床垫).

Again, when they hit one another with chairs, the chairs are made of soft wood

and when they crash through windows, the glass is made of sugar! But although

their work depends on trick of this sort, it also requires a high degree of skill and

training. Often a stuntman' s success depends on careful timing. For example,

when he is "blown up" in a battle scene, he has to jump out of the way of the

explosion just at the right moment.

Naturally stuntmen are well paid for their work, but they lead dangerous

lives. They often get seriously injured, and sometimes killed. A Norwegian

stuntman, for example, skied over the edge of a cliff (悬崖) a thousand feet high.

His parachute (降落伞) failed to open, and he was killed. In spite of all the risks,

this is no longer a profession for men only. Men no longer dress up as women

when actresses have to perform some dangerous action. For nowadays there

are stunt girls, too.

The opera house in Santa Fe, New Mexico, is one of the most beautiful in the United States. It is small and open, with one roof over the stage where singers perform and another roof over part of the audience. This opera house in the mountains is one of the best in the country. It may seem surprising because performances are only given during seven weeks in the summer, and because Santa Fe is a very small city.

One reason why the Santa Fe Opera is so good is that it attracts many excellent young singers. They all hope to sing in famous opera houses like Metropolitan in New York someday, and they work hard to become well-known during the summer. The musicians and directors are experts who come from the best orchestras(管弦乐队)and operas in the country during their vacations. They enjoy working there because they like to live in Santa Fe, which is near both the mountains and the desert. It is very beautiful there in the summer.

The state government of New Mexico advertises the Santa Fe Opera in newspapers all over the country, and a great many tourists come to New Mexico because of the opera. Still, most of the audience do come to Santa Fe and other nearby cities, and all the seats in the theater are sold out for every show.

There is only one thing that some people do not like about the Santa Fe Opera, and that is the cold weather. Because the theater is open, performances can’t start before it gets dark at nine o’clock in the evening, and then the mountain air becomes very cool. Sometimes people complain about the cold air, but because the operas are good, these people come back again — wearing warm coats.

69. This passage mainly introduces _______.

A. a mountain city

B. young singers

C. an opera house

D. the tourism in Santa Fe

70. It seems surprising that Santa Fe becomes famous because _______.

A. it is only a very small place

B. it is between the mountains and desert

C. all the seats are sold out for every show

D. musicians there are from the best orchestras

71. From the passage, we can learn that _______.

A. the opera house is open without any roofs

B. musicians always spend vacations in Santa Fe

C. the government advertises to attract more musicians

D. performances are held in Santa Fe only after sunset

What exactly is a lie? Is it anything we say which we know is untrue? Or is it something more than that? For example, suppose a friend wants to borrow some money form you. You say, “ I wish I could help you but I’m short of money myself.” In fact, you are not short of money but your friend is in the habit of not paying his debts and you don’t want to hurt his feelings by reminding him of this. Is this really a lie?

Professor Jerald Jellison of the University of Southern California has made a scientific study of lying. According to him, women are better liars than men, particularly when telling a “ white lie”, such as when a woman at a party tells another woman that she likes her dress when she really thinks it looks terrible. However, this is only one side of the story. Other researchers say that men are more likely to tell more serious lies, such as making a promise that they have no intention of carrying out. This is the kind of lie politicians and businessmen are supposed to be particularly skilled at : the lie from which the liar hopes to profit

(得益) or gain in some way.

Research has also been done into the way people’s behavior changes in a

number of small, clearly unimportant ways when they lie. It has been found that

if they are sitting down at the time, they tend to move about in their chairs more

than usual. To the trained observer they are saying “ I wish I were somewhere

else now.” They also tend to touc h certain parts of the face more often , in

particular the nose. One explanation of this may be that lying causes a slight

increase in blood pressure. The tip of the nose is very sensitive to such

changes and the increased pressure makes it itch (发痒).

Is a Training Class or Family Teacher Necessary?

More and more middle school students are going to all kinds of training classes or having family teachers at the weekend. There are two different viewpoints about it.

Some thinks it necessary. Firstly, it’s more effective to study with a teacher than by themselves. Secondly, it can strengthen what is learnt in class. Besides, they can learn a lot more. Others think it unnecessary. For one thing, students can easily form the habit of dependence. For another, students need time to relax from time to time. What’s more, the purpose of many training classes and teachers is to make money.

In my opinion, whether a training class or family teacher is needed just depends. If you are really very weak at or interested in a certain subject, maybe it’s OK for you. But be sure to choose a good and suitable class or teacher, otherwise it would be a waste of time and money.
