A lot of animals are afraid during an eclipse1 of the sun. Birds stop singing. Sometimes people too are afraid. Astronomers2 know the dates of eclipses and they are not afraid. The old astronomers of Babylon and Egypt had no telescopes3; but the sky in those countries is usually clear, and so they could watch the stars easily. They studied everything in the sky and they also noticed both total and partial eclipses.

Because they knew the dates of eclipses, they had great power. People believed that the sky was important. They believed that an eclipse could kill a man.

About 2500 years ago there was a very long war. One

battle followed another, and the end never came. During one

of the battles, there was a partial eclipse of the sun. The day got very dark, and the soldiers on both sides were filled with fear. They believed that the gods were angry. So they stopped fighting, and ended their long war.

The sun is a star. It appears to be bigger than any

other star. That is because it is near us; but the other

stars are far away. The sun shines because it is very hot,

but the moon shines because it reflects the sun's light. It

is like a big mirror. If we visited the moon,we should see

the earth. It is also like a mirror and it reflects the light of the sun.

Does the sun ever get dark during the day? It does so when the moon hides it. Sometimes the moon goes in front of

the sun. We can watch its edge when it slowly crosses the

sun's disc5. Everything gets darker and darker; then,at last,we cannot see any part of the sun's disc. The moon is hiding

it completely. That is a total eclipse of the sun; sometimes only part of the sun's disc is hidden; that is not a total eclipse. It is a partial eclipse of the sun.

Questions 1 to 5 are based on the passage above.

because_____.

A.the astronomers used their great power to stop it

B.an eclipse killed the soldiers on both sides

C.the war took so long time that the soldiers felt tired

D.a partial eclipse of the sun happened during one of the battles

4.Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A.The sun is very hot because it shines.

B.The moon can shine because it is a star.

C.Other stars appear to be smaller than the sun because they are far away.

D.The earth cannot reflect the light of the sun because it isn't a real mirror.

5.It can be concluded that an eclipse of the sun happens because_____.

A.the moon passes between the sun and the earth

B.the sun gets dark during the day

C.the earth's shadow falls on the moon

eclipse n./vt.

*Our happiness was eclipsed by the terrible news.

原文第一段说“Astro nomers know the dates of eclipses……”,由此可知,日食发生的日期能够推测出。

从第三段可知,日偏食发生后,双方士兵以为天神发怒了,“So they stopped fighting, and ended their long war.”,所以D选项是战争结束的原因。

第四段说“It appears to be bigger than any other star. That is because it is near us;but the other stars are far away.”,由此可知他星球看上去比太阳小是因为它们离我们很遥远。

5.选A。

You are required to write at least 150 words but no more than 200 words. Whether to Attend College at Home or Abroad? Currently, with studying abroad gains mounting popularity among people, there is a heated debate about whether to attend college at home or abroad. Opinions on this topic vary from person to person. Some see more benefits in studying at home while others claim that studying abroad is a more ideal choice as it?s more challenging. Personally, I am a strong favorer of the latter view. Listed below are the reasons for my advice. First of all, attending college abroad provides an opportunity to broaden one?s experience and mind. You can acquire cross-cultural experiences and gain new perspectives on your chosen field of study. In addition, studying abroad helps you to polish your social skills; you can make friends with different people with different background. Thirdly, overseas studying is conducive to the formation of an independent, autonomous and tenacious personality, which will ultimately benefit the achievement of our life goals. Just as an old saying goes: “It is better to travel thousand miles than to read ten thousand books.” Then studying abroad can not only enable us to reap in our books, but also in our trips. And this is why attending college abroad is a preferable selection for me. Think again. Leasing can end up being just as expensive as buying. Most people think about leasing because they believe it will cost them less money. They're right-it is cheaper, but only in the short term. For example, if you were to lease anew Subaru Forester, you might pay $300 per month for the car. If you were to buy the same car, you would pay about $400 per month. Over a three-year, you would save $3600-a big savings. But after your lease is over, you have to give the car back. Many people want to lease because they can drive a more expensive car than they might otherwise be able to afford. For example, if you spend $300 monthly on a car, you might be able to lease a new Ford Explorer. For the same price, you might have to buy a used Explorer, or buy a new but much less expensive model. A lease, therefore, allows you to drive the latest models of more expensive cars. However, whatever car you can afford to buy you get to keep it, and it will always have a resell or trade-in(以新旧换)value if you want to upgrade to a new car later. Furthermore, people who lease cars are often shocked by how much they must pay when the lease is over . Most leases limit you to a certain number of miles. If you go over that, you must pay for each mile. As a result, you may end up paying thousands of dollars in mileage(里程) fees. In addition, when you lease ,you have to pay for regular maintenance and repairs to the vehicle. Since you must return the car finally, you are paying to repair someone else's car.

Hawking was speaking at the opening of the Leverhulme Center for the Future of Intelligence(LCFI)at Cambridge University, a multi-disciplinary institute that will attempt to tackle some of the open-ended questions raised by the rapid pace of development in AI research. “We spend a great deal of time studying history,” Hawking said, “which, let’s face it ,is mostly the history of stupidity. So it’s a welcome change that people are studying instead the future of intelligence.” While the world-renowned physicist has often been cautious about AI, raising concerns that humanity could be the architect of its own destruction if it creates a super-intelligence with a will of its own, he was also quick to highlight the positives that AI research can bring “The potential benefits of creating intelligence are huge”, he said, “We cannot predict what we might achieve when our own minds are amplified by AL. 2017年6 月英语六级真题及答案(三套全) 2017年6月英语六级真题 作文一:国内国外上大学 Directions: Suppose you are asked to give advice on whether to attend college at home or abroad, write an essay to state your opinion. You are required to write at least 150 words but no more than 200 words. 参考答案 Nowadays, there has been a heated discussion as to a better choice between attending college at home and abroad. Views on the topic vary greatly among people from different walks of life. Some believe that it is a better choice to study in domestic colleges, but others consider it better to study abroad. I totally agree with the latter idea for the reasons presented below. To begin with, it harms the society in that the greater the competition is, the higher the recruitment requirements will become. Therefore, with experiences of studying abroad, graduates will become more competitive in job hunting. Furthermore, it is beneficial to the students themselves to study abroad. Without the choice to pursue overseas study, many great scholars today would never have achieved such great success. From my perspective, it is crucial that the government should encourage people to pursue overseas study. Also it is crucial that people should understand the meaning and value of attending college abroad. Only in this way can we achieve greater success. 作文二:文科还是理科 Directions: Suppose you are asked to give advice on whether to major in humanities or science, write an essay to state your opinion. You are required to write at least 150 words but no more than 200 words. 参考范文: Living in a world which is full of changes and challenges,we are confronted with new problems every single day. Of all the issues, one might concern the high school graduates the most, and it is if there are two options: to major in science or humanities. As for me, I prefer the latter. Why,you may wonder, should I prefer to major in humanities. The reasons responsible for it can be listed as follows . Among the most important reasons cited by people is that to major in humanities, directly or indirectly, can not only enrich our basic knowledge about the diversified culture but also sharpen one’s insight in daily routine, which is of great importance in one’s growth. What’s more, to study humanities can give us an independent personali ty and a deeper vision towards the world, if it were not for those two attributes, how could we achieve great goals in this dog-eat-dog world. Above all, in such a society where emphasis, more often than not,is laid on the depth of one’s thought, to choose humanities as one’s major, must be the best way .
