Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Background and Significance of the Report

With the development of opening up and reform, Chinese market economy is continuously developing, and foreign capital is constantly flowing in, which further promotes the progress of globalization. Under this circumstance, contracts, especially international business contracts, are increasingly becoming the absolutely necessary part of Chinese business activities. Correspondingly, Chinese domestic enterprises? demand for translators who are good at translating English business contracts into Chinese business contracts is growing with each passing day. It is certainly true to say that in the western world from the Roman Empire to the European Common Market international commerce and administration is made possible by the work of translators (Kelly, 1979: 1). For promoting economic exchange around the world and increasing China?s economy power, at present, China urgently needs a group of translators who can flexibly use translation skills and have strong bilingual capacity as well as professional knowledge about international business contracts.

This translation report has analyzed and concluded some translation problems and translation skills in the international business contracts through examples, which can greatly help the translator who works for the translation of international business contracts to understand some common but difficult words and long sentences in contracts text translation and learn significant translation principles and processing methods. Through this translation report, the author realizes that she needs to enhance their English ability and have flexibility in use of translation skills like other translators. What?s more, they need sound ability of expressing in Chinese. With the sound ability of Chinese, translators can correctly express the meaning of original text with proper Chinese expressing way. This report has some inspiration for the translators who work for the translation of international business contracts. Therefore, the report has certain reference value and practical guiding significance.
