Text 10

Mr Grey was the manager of a small office in London. He lived in the country, and came up to work by train. He liked walking from the station to his office unless it was raining, because it gave him more exercise.

One morning he was walking along the street when a stranger stopped him and said to him, “You may not remember m e, sir, but seven years ago I came to London without a penny in my pockets. I stopped you in the street and asked you to lend me some money, and you lent me five pounds, because you said you were willing to take a chance so as to give a man a start on the road to success.”

Mr Grey thought for a few moments and then said, “Yes, I remember you. Go on with your story.”

“Well,” answered the stranger, “are you still willing to take a chance?”

Katya knew she was not good at basketball, but she decided to try out for the basketball team anyway. She hoped she would improve with practice. When the team roster was posted the next day, Katya's name was not on the list.

Basketball was the latest of Katya's failures. Soccer was fun, but Katya was always bumping into her teammates. She had also tried art, but she drew even worse.

Katya was good at reading, though. She read about all kinds of sports. She also read about art. Then one day she found a book about photography in the library. She couldn't take her eyes off the beautiful black-and-white photos, and she imagined herself taking pictures.

Katya's brother, Alex, had an old camera. Katya began to take photos. One afternoon she showed up at basketball practice and took photos of her friends playing ball. Three days later the pictures were ready.

Katya decided to show the photos to Alex. He took the packet and laid all the photos on the table. He looked at each shot for a long time. Then he pointed to one of the pictures. “That's a great shot. I think you've found something you're really good at,” he said.

In the photo Katya's friend Kim was shooting a basketball. Her feet were high off the floor, and her arms were above her head in a position that made Kim look like a ballerina. Actually, her friend looked more like a dancer than a ballplayer.

Katya smiled. “So this is what it feels like to be good at doing something you like,” she thought.

Clothing is a language. It tells us about individual people:their personality, their age, their place in society and so on.If we want to know more about a society, we can look at traditional clothing.

The continent of Africa has a long history and a rich culture, and this is shown in traditional dress. You often find three colours—red, gold and green in the clothing. The first colour stands for

the blood of millions of people who suffered as slaves;the second is the rich resources of the African earth;and the third represents the grasslands of home.

The patterns on the clothing also have a meaning.A common pattern is in the form of a cross“X”,which stands for “unity”.Another pattern is a rectangular(长方形的)box, which represents “strength”.Because clothing has a strong social meaning, people are very careful in choosing what to wear.It would be a serious mistake to wear the wrong clothing, or to wear clothes in the wrong way. For instance, in Ghana, a woman should wear her waistband(腰带) differently according to the importance of the social event.

Traditional dress also tells us about everyday life.African designs are famous.Wide temperature range requires that the clothes be comfortable for daily life.

Could your best friend make you fat?

Researchers who have studied“networks”of obesity(肥胖) think so:they found that if someone's friend becomes obese, that person's chances of becoming obese increase by more than half.

Brothers or sisters and a husband or a wife also have an influence, although reduced_people whose brothers or sisters became obese were 40 percent more likely to grow obese, while people whose husband or wife became obese were 37 percent more likely to.

“This is the first study to show how obesity spreads through the social network from person to person,”James Fowler of the University of California, San Diego, who worked on the study, told in a telephone interviewing.

The researchers said their findings show that obesity is contagious—not like a virus which is

contagious, but in a social sense.

It may help explain why obesity is worsening across the United States, with two-thirds of Americans over-weight and almost a third technically obese.

“It has become very popular to speak of the obesity epidemic. We began to wonder if it is truly an epidemic,”Dr.Nicholas Christakis, a professor of medical sociology at Harvard Medical School in Boston, told the briefing.

“We think that these findings reinforce(加强) the idea that obesity is not just an individual problem but a collective problem,”Christakis said.

“People look around them and see people gaining weight and it might change their attitude about what constitutes an acceptable body size,”he added.“You might say it's OK to be heavier.”

A.the influence of people is smaller and smaller

B.fat persons are having less and less friends

C.the number of fat persons is decreasing largely

D.persons are becoming thinner and thinner

A.Obesity is popular with Americans.

B.Obesity spreads from person to person.

C.Obesity can be spread like a virus.

D.Obesity is becoming an epidemic.

34.In what aspect do your fat friends have an impact on you?

A.They may influence you how to choose a lover.

B.They may assist you in forming a life value.

C.They may change your attitudes towards obesity.

D.They may help you understand what obesity is.

35.From the passage,we can infer that________.

A.it's better not to make friends with fat persons

B.obesity is a kind of disease that can spread

C.most Americans think obesity is a kind of beauty

D.it needs a collective effort to deal with obesity

从前面的have an influence知道,reduced people指的是影响性减少,因此A符合题意.

答案:A

33.解析:细节判断题. 从第四段的obesity spreads through the social network from person to person可知,研究的结果为B.

答案:B

34.解析:细节判断题. 结合最后一段的change their attitude about what constitutes an acceptable body size知道,答案为C.

Although many Chinese students say that their knowledge of English grammar is good, most would admit that their spoken English is poor.Whenever I speak to a Chinese student, they always say, “My spoken English is poor.”__36__I would like to suggest that there may be some reasons for their problems with spoken English.

First, they fail to find suitable words to express themselves due to a limited vocabulary.__37__ However, you can speak with a limited vocabulary, if you choose a positive attitude.Others will follow you as long as you use the words that you know.

__38__Sometimes they make mistakes when they are speaking because they are shy and nervous.Yet students should remember that their goal should be fluency not accuracy.Your aim in writing is to be accurate following the rules of grammar and using the right words and spelling them correctly. However, in speaking your aim is fluency. You want to get your message across to talk to someone in English, as quickly and as well as you can, even though sometimes you may use a wrong word or tense, but it doesn't matter.__39__

The third reason is that not enough attention is paid to listening. You have one mouth but two ears! All that hearing is necessary for you to start speaking.

Fourth, most Chinese students are reactive rather than proactive language learners.Instead of actively seeking out opportunities to improve their spoken English, they passively wait for speaking opportunities to come to them and wonder why their English always remains poor.__40__

A.The person you are speaking to will understand you and make allowances for any mistakes he hears.

B.They may try to avoid making similar mistakes next time.

C.Obviously the better answer is to expand their vocabulary.

D.If you have this proactive outlook, then you will see English opportunities wherever you go.

E.However, their spoken English does not have to remain“poor”!

F.Second, they are afraid of making mistakes.

G.The second reason lies in the reluctance of using what has just been learned.

Instead, many people turn to traditional healers (医疗者) when they are ill. These traditional healers, or witch doctors, sometimes have strange theories (学说) about how the body works. In West Bengal, for example, some people have long believed that getting bitten by a dog leads to the birth of little dogs. Dr Kumar Kanti Ghosh is a psychiatrist. He heard this belief when a nine-year-old boy came to his office about ten days after being bitten by a dog. He really couldn't believe his ears when he heard that. Kanti Ghosh sai d, “He believes that he had a little dog developing inside him. And his parents have said that sometimes the boy is barking like a dog.” A healer named Budheswar Singh says his medicine made of yogurt and herbs has cured many people. “If the man is brought to me in time, I can give him my medicine and he will be all right,” he said. Sanjay Samui is a medical doctor who wishes people would stop believing ideas like this. “They are poorly-educated village people. They still strongly believe such odd ideas,” he said. He tells everyone that in no situation can a dog be born by a human. The national government spends about one and a half percent of India's GDP on health care. This is among the lowest rates in the world. It means such traditional healers are the only choice in some places. The healers spread medical myths (神话) and even make villagers not believe doctors. 语篇解读:在印度一些贫困地区,人们依然迷信巫医。 21.The example given in Paragraph 1 shows that ________.
